skymello2
Al Richards of the Excelsior Drum & Bugle Corps plays a holiday tune during the Victorian Stroll in Troy on Sunday. (Michael P. Farrell / Times Union) ==================== Article: Holiday gala is a thing of the past Visitors enjoy a chance to time travel as downtown dresses up for annual Victorian Stroll By DAVID FILKINS, Staff writer First published: Monday, December 6, 2004 TROY -- Haughty women, gussied up in sequins and feathered hats promenaded down the sidewalk as Santa Claus jammed on a saxophone in the middle of the street. A horse-drawn carriage clopped along, providing the only form of transportation. The 22nd Victorian Stroll graced downtown Troy on Sunday, transforming the business district into a bustling, 19th-century holiday celebration. Music, art, food and fun rounded out the British-inspired Christmas gala. Vince Cummings stood at the corner of Second Street and Broadway dressed like an English gentleman. The Perth resident wore a long, dark coat, with hat to match. He held a black leash, attached to a 180-pound Newfoundland. "They're (Newfoundlands) actually indigenous to Victorian times," Cummings said as the fluffy, black dog frolicked with the crowd. "They were fashionable, if you will, to the upper class." And then there was fashion! Albany's Orlo School of Hair Design had models dressed in chic silver costumes posing for photos -- and gawks -- in storefront windows. It was the school's first appearance at the stroll. Creative director Erin Pihlaja coordinated the models and reveled in the attention from the crowd. "The response has been awesome," Pihlaja said. "The public is enchanted by (the models) like it's magic or something." One passerby, Clifton Park resident Flo Snell, 81, was born in Troy but was attending her first Victorian Stroll. "Taking part in the friendliness has been a joy," Snell said. "I tell you, this really brings back memories of these old buildings." Across the street, amid myriad vendors, Tom Ladd rested with Kate and Belle, the two Percheron horses he used to pull his carriage. Ladd, owner of Albany Carriage Service, was offering $5 rides around the block with the white horses, adorned with festive regalia. "It's always a lot of fun here," said Ladd, who was attending his 20th Victorian Stroll. "The people really enjoy this." The Ilium Cafe picked the perfect day to do business. The Broadway coffee shop opened its doors for the first time Sunday morning and customers piled in and out after warming up with a hot chocolate or cappuccino. "We didn't try to open on this day," manager Christa Caron said. "It just sort of fell into place. This is the biggest day of the year for Troy, and I am just happy we could be part of the stroll." Linda Hillman, president of the Rensselaer County Chamber of Commerce, said local businesses welcome the stroll every year. "We get so many phone calls leading up to this day," Hillman said. "We enhance it each year and are always happy with the turnout." The day concluded with the lighting of the official tree at City Hall. A fireworks display followed. As the crowd dispersed, cars returned, costumes were packed away, and Troy as we know it returned to normal. ================== Several of us played at Victorian Stroll yesterday afternoon. It was a bit on the chilly side, but everyone had fun. Al, how did you get just your picture in the paper???? :P LOL Nice photo!!!
