ContraFart
I am suprised I diddnt see BD '93 in there. That was an awsome book, and they turned it up about 5 levels on Finals night. I think Star blended better, and had a better overall sound, but BD '93 had probably the best performance. -edit- I really cant type Edited March 11, 2003 by ContraFart
BlackTuba57
I didn't get a chance to see Cavies live this year :(, but even though they have improved tremendously I'm still trying to figure out how they won high brass after watching the broadcast. I know, it's not fair to judge a show based on such a crummy format, but they must have had the easiest book in the top 5 and I could swear I heard "trumpet" cracks in the opener. They also came off as extraordinarily top heavy with very little coming from the low brass. I'm sure I'll have a better assessment once the CD/DVD recordings arrive, but on PBS it seems like they got smoked by BD, Cadets and PR.Either way, I wouldn't add them to this list until I can hear a better recording. Fewer notes doesn't make a book easy. The book is difficult based on EXPOSURE. And there might have been one facked note in the opener. Check your speakers maybe? Swingitbabe
Did anyone else think Cadets 2001 was good?
GeneralTsoChicken
Fewer notes doesn't make a book easy. The book is difficult based on EXPOSURE. And there might have been one facked note in the opener. Check your speakers maybe? I'm not really taking sides here, just making a point. I did check my speakers, LOL. It's obvious that the cavaliers just have a different philosophy about their brass book than say pr or bd, cadets. I'm not saying it's bad, but it is anything but exposed--it is very thick, written thick(minus some excpetions), and very harmonic. I think having fewer notes DOES make a book easy to a certain extent. less notes means a lot less to clean, and even if exposed, it is much harder to work on a lot of notes than a few exposed. Heck, i just love drum corps Cavs Philosophy or BD Philosophy. b**bs
RaiderLex
I know -- my sister was there and she says the same things everyone else has. I think I'm finding it hard to reconcile that they could have turned around the program. If someone had told me six months ago that Cavies would go undefeated in BRASS, I would have politely laughed in their face. I need to hear a real recording, as that broadcast didn't showcase much.Either way, a lot of you have short-term memory judging by the vote totals so far in this thread. After hearing nothing but adoring praise all summer long for the Cavies brass, I have to admit that the broadcast was a bit of a let-down. They werent undefeated in brass....i believe Cadets beat them once!!!
