The Kilties Winter Small Corps 1960s. Love some of the faces!

sc000bb408.jpg

This is pre-season 1965. The Badgerland Association held Small Corps competitions, a precursor to the MiniCorps activity of today.

Identification is clouded 45 years later, due to the Kilties' tradition of switching instruments for any photo shoot! But I'll give it a shot.

DM is longtime Kiltie M&M instructor Fred Hoppe.

Front row:

Tom Sorenson, well-known drum instructor/writer

Bruce Thompson, French horn

Al Mollerskov, coach of many championship girls softball teams

Butch Ryan, designer of the clasicc Kiltie Drummer logo

Les Chambasian, famous soprano soloist and horn tech

Bob Ahlborg, the Kilties' first contra guru

Bill Schultz, VFW baritone champion and instructor of multi hornlines

Back row:

Butch Chekanoff, longtime Racine firefighter

Jeff Anderson, went on to play baritone in the USAF Academy corps

Mickey Czosnek, soprano

John Dorsey, VFW soprano champion, now a retired Racine band director

Rick Scheel, baritone

Bart Fojtik, still a band director

Moby Erickson, lead soprano

Still one of the greatest uniforms of all time! Didn't know they played Rogers drums back then... somehow I thought they were always a Ludwig corps. Great picture!

I have Anne Mixdorf to thank for the photo. I acquired her old Badgerland/Parade Specialists corps archive. It has about 300 photos going back to the early 1960s. I'll post more in the near future.

There are so may Wisconsin corps I haven't seen photos of here. Whatever she has will be gratefully appreciated. Especially of the Spectacle City Mariners.

Whatever goes up will be great, but I am especially interested in seeing photos of the short lived Madison Scouts splinter group the 32nd Hussars. Their uniforms were fantastic.

If you're taking requests any photos from the Eau Claire Boys or Sundowners would be appreciated.

We were in a lot of Annie Mixdorff shows - seemed to always have a parade and a county fair to go along with it.

I remember it being called Parade Specialties back then.

I remember when we got a contra back in the mid '60's and Annie commenting that "with the price of those things it will

mean the end of the small drum corps".
