A Season in NY in the 1970's

Recommended Posts

I am just going to try to remember what a season looked like for us in the 1970's. Since corps were mostly local-based, we could practice on Tuesdays and Thursday and then travel to contests on Saturday. So here is what I remember.

May....Canton, OH

St. Claire Shores and Riverview(?), Michigan

June....3-5 Firemen parades

Cleveland, OH

Missisauga, Ontario

July.......Oswego, NY

Kitchener, Ontario

North Tonawanda, NY

Angola, NY

Greece, NY

Toronto, Ontario

August....NT Open

A-I Open, Butler, PA

US Open, Marion, OH

London, Ontario

Philadelphia, PA (DCI World Championships)

Add a few more parades, the NY-Penn Championships in Lackawana, NY

Not a bad season back then. We did take a few days July 4th weekend to Illinois (Des Plaines, etc).

How about you?

Great timing Keith as I just found some schedule cards the Westshoremen (Sr) handed to members in the late 70s. For us the season was something like:

Any parade we could find (needed the $$$$$ badly)

Memorial Day Weekend - exhibition at Mount Carmel/Danville, PA (traditional Sr corps kick off)

Stand still once in a while for the $$$$ or publicity. Remember playing at Armed Forces Day and for the openeing of a lumber yard.

Either DCA or RCA (smaller Sr circuit) show almost every weekend over the summer. RCA shows had smaller prize money and were held at places you only knew about because of corps. Almost all shows in both circuits were in PA/NY/NJ.

4th of July - 2 or 3 parades in Baltimore beltway then exhibition just before the fireworks show at Carlisle HS *groan*

One big trip a year - "weekender" at Canton, OH (Sat) and Erie (sun afternoon).

Week before Labor Day - RCA Championships

Labor Day Weekend - DCA Prelims/Finals

Summer practice was twice a week then changed to Friday night and all day Saturday when more and more out of town people joined.
