dcpguy1111
But you do have to admit that, on the whole, the style of performance we see in DCI today isn't nearly as easy for the "casual fan" to grasp as it was 20 or 30 years ago, right? In the years trying to convince my parents to let me do drum corps, I've had them sit down and watch the DCI broadcasts with me since 2003, and their minds are blown every year (ie: they were entertained). And my parents are pretty much casual if you ask me, granted my dad played violin in middle and high school, but that doesn't really count (though it helps him appreciate and support what I want to do with my life), and my mom's not even from this country. So yeah, I'll admit, maybe DCI today has closed it's niche off to SOME people, but has opened it to very many others. I mean, if you ask me, drum corps is alot better today (say, 99 to present) than it was in the 80s. Probably because this is the drum corps I grow up with. Isn't it all relative? soccerguy315
IMO drum corps shows today are kinda like Shakespeare plays. You can watch it performed once and get the plot and the story and enjoy yourself (aka you like the show). Or, you can watch it multiple times, or be more adept at picking out the little things (Shakespeare's puns, the flow of the dialogue, the genius that he puts into those plays, the guard work that enhances a certain part of the show perfectly, the drill that really makes the music come to life, etc), and enjoy it for completely different reasons. Is it bad if you watch Shakespeare and enjoy the play for the story? Not at all, you had a good time. But for someone who wants more than the story, you can find that to. I think the same is true for drum corps. to be on topic: I've decided to get a minor in music, but I don't play a brass instrument at school. dbc03
I'm a Computer Science major and fairly average at playing trumpet. I managed to march in a top 5 corps for two years and another div 1 corps another year. The BS about it being so hard to make a drum corps is discouraging, because there are a lot of people out there a lot better than me that don't think they could hack it in a Division 1 corps. Also, the top 5 corps I was with was about 50/50 on music major/other major.
dcpguy1111
It takes alot more than talent to make a top 12 drum corps... I've seen more talented kids get cut for less talented ones. And in all of those instances I definitely agree with the staff's decisions. You people talk as if there are 135 Wynton Marsalis' running around the field in every corps. Pshhh. If it seriously is too hard for a kid to make a corps...well...maybe it just wasn't for them? I sure as #### aren't going to make the Chicago Symphony any time soon, I'm not gonna gripe about it though (not that I really care about becoming a world class player) Edited May 6, 2006 by dcpguy1111
Rage
The vast majority of those I marched with were music majors (at some point in their college careers, at least).
