goalieguy
I'll agree with that ! The evolution of the instrument will have a lot to say about who is or isn't loudest. Don't really want to plug the Bb's, they're still in that transition period. Pat
Morgoth Bauglir
I wouldn't necessarily say it's "bad" teaching. He just has a different philosophy about brass. But I definitely do agree with the comments about the results. Cadets 00 and 05, along with SCV 04 have some moments where the trumpets go a bit over the edge. Maybe it's just that the yammies can't handle that much air? But wouldn't not changing your teaching style to fit the equipment your line uses be considered bad teaching? Someone of his stature should know the differences between g and Bb horns.
Fred Steiner Jr.
to be fair lets divide into different horns .rotary era-72-76 ------------- 1975 Madison 1975 Muchochos 1976 blue Devils 2 valve -77-the best sounding G horn --------------- 1978 SCV 1979 Guardsmen 1980-EVERYBODY !!! 1982 SCV 1982 CADETS--GARFIELD>. 1982 Phantom 1985 Suncoast Sound 3 valve ?? ------------ 1988 Madison 1989 Phantom 1989 SCV 1990 crossmen 1994 Blue Devils 1996 Phantom 1999 Madison 1999 Glassmen 2000 crossmen Bb 2000/ 2001 ---- 2002 cadets 2002 SCV 2003 Boston 2003 Blue Devils 2004 Cavies as you see when ever we change instruments it takes a year or two to get situated with them. SkyRyder_FMM
I saw my first corps in 77, so from that point on, Id's say that hands down, Madison takes the cake for loudest sop lines in most any year. Most notably (for me anyway) 82, 83, 84, 85, 88, and 95. Spirit's lines in 79 and 80 were right up there too, as was 84 and 89 Phantom. EdMedina
Loudest sizzling shimmerers I can ever remember hearing myself: 84 Garfield Cadets 85 Suncoast Sound 86 Blue Devils/Spirit of Atlanta 87 SC Vanguard 88 Star of Indiana 89 VK/Bluecoats 96 Phantom Regiment 97 SC Vanguard 00 Bushwackers (pound for pound) Edited December 22, 2005 by EdMedina
bradrick
3 valve ??------------ 1988 Madison 1989 Phantom 1989 SCV ( also not sure of the year the switch to 3 valve came in ) CHEZ Not trying to derail this topic. Just thought I'd chime in here for the sake of accuracy. 89 SCV played all two valve instuments. In 1990 we got two experimental 3-valve contras that were pretty crappy and couldn't handle the volume of sound a Junior corps played with. I'd be kinda surprised if Madison or Phantom had three valve horns in 88 or 89.
Newseditor44
Someone go listen to the 1984 Freelancers opener and then get back to me. I seem to remember they had guard members playing soprano's in the opener (but i could be wrong, I never saw the show, just heard it). You wouldn't have seen a full hornline with three valves until 91 or 92.
rut-roh
Actually, three valves were being used in DCI starting in 1990. I know that VK, Crossmen, SCV, and (I think) Cadets and BD all had them.
