Longer? Maybe.

Never timed it. Don't care.

Louder? Probably not.

Considering they only had something like 52 brass that year, I would agree.

As effective? Definitely not.

TOTALLY disagree. I thought it was way more effective in many respects.

1) It was the actual END of the show.

2) It's how Niner-Two is supposed to end (one of the most "truthful to the original" drum corps arrangements of a song I've ever heard).

3) The buildup they created with that amazing color guard, going from all unison flag work, to a solo performer throwing a rifle a mile in the air and catching it solidly, back to the unison flag work, the "wave" from left to right as the last chord hit, and the the guard rush to the front as they lofted their flags in all directions...it was a far better coordinated effect than what Madison did that year. And the crowd response they got was just as stadium-shaking.

One of my all-time favorites!

was the company front in Vanguard 89 towars the end as loud as it seemed? It sounds like the mellos were wailing on that stuff.

That's what I was gonna say, it seems like it'd have been REALLY loud. I've never seen s show in person, so I'm goin on recordings here.

Some of loudest that come to mind for me:

Star 1990

Regiment 2003 & 1989 (1996 is up there, too)

SCV 1987

Scounts 1995

Spirit 1980

Harvey

A sleeper pick:

1980 Phantom Regiment, the power-push ending to "Carmen." Some serious heat, especially from the low brass.

I was 2 when it was performed but I'm really amazed how Star 91 didn't lose volume towards the end, really kept it pushing during the cross to cross.

It was very well done.

However, it did NOT get the crowd reaction Madison did. I was there.
