Another one that people who haven't marched might not be aware of is, don't break rank. And if you are marching member, and someone does start to break rank, don't be a jerk about it-- just kindly ask them to wait or walk around. (I've seen some people be pretty rude about it--probably worse than the actual "offense"...)

I wish people would cheer more -- the shows I go to people act like they are at a symphony concert --- golf claps at the end of each number and at the end of the show.

Meanwhile I'm cheering at good tosses, good lickes, ect and people are glaring at me.

It's a drum corps show -- the more you cheer the more the performers are going to put out.

I was at a show a couple of weeks ago and I had this lady behind me who went straight to 10 with the WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! as soon as the drum major saluted. Now I really don't like the I'm-too-cool-to-clap crowd and I like to applaud all performers - especially when I can see how hard they have worked not just how good they are.

But that lady was a bit much.

You'd almost think that she was at a Chippendales show.

heh

I would say that cell phones irritate me the most. Even though like most people I have one, I never use it while driving, sitting in a restuarant, and ESPECIALLY while watching a Drum Corps show. There is NO WAY I'm going to take or make a call while a corps is in the middle of it's ballad. AIN'T HAPPENIN'! I've seen (heard I should say) people use those things while they're (I assume) taking care of business in the bathroom. It's an absurd addiction. The younger kids I don't mind too much at the shows. They can be a pain in the neck from time to time, but I can deal with that. I have to stand up for them - I used to be one of them! :)

Give ALL the corps a standing O at the end of the show...they have earnned it...wether or not you liked the show or hate the corps.

Agreed and well said.

Well, no, not really. The standing ovation is supposed to be the ultimate in crowd response, something above and beyond the normal applause that everyone deserves. If you give a standing ovation to every single corps, it kind of devalues the action. If you're doing something at the maximum all the time, how do you go past that? It's hard to play a crescendo when you're always at fortissimo.

If a show blows you away, yeah, stand up, by all means. But if a show just totally leaves you cold, you have no obligation to stand. You should clap, at least, but nobody has to give a standing ovation for a show that doesn't deserve one. That just makes it mean less for the times when you really SHOULD break it out.

I don't give every corps a standing O after their performance, but I do give every corps a standing O when they troupe the stands. IMO, the first is a reward for the product, the latter is the reward for the hard work.

It is kind of sad though, when you think about it, that we have to write columns and initiate posts now for fans to " cheer more " at DCI shows.
