byline
Hard to believe Madison Scouts are listed only once. 81 ?82 ? In this thread from RAMD, Whitney has Blue Devils listed with a question mark for '82. So I'll do a bit more searching and see what I can find. I thought we'd had this discussion at least once before here on DCP. Here's one thread devoted to the topic. Geoff's list shows Santa Clara for 1981 and Blue Devils for 1982. Here's his complete list: (GMichael1230 @ Jul 25 2006, 12:10 PM)Ok, here goes: 1972 Anaheim Kingsmen 1973 Troopers 1974 SCV 1975 27th 1976 27th 1977 Phantom Regiment 1978 SCV/27th 1979 27th 1980 27th 1981 SCV 1982 Blue Devils 1983 Madison Scouts 1984 Blue Devils 1985 Spirit of Atlanta 1986 Blue Devils (Spirit 2nd) 1987 Spirit of Atlanta 1988 Phantom Regiment (Spirit 4th) 1989 Cadets 1990 Blue Devils 1991 Cadets 1992 Blue Devils 1993 Cadets 1994 Cadets 1995 Blue Devils 1996 Cadets 1997 Blue Devils 1998 Blue Devils 1999 Blue Devils 2000 Cavaliers 2001 Blue Devils 2002 Cavaliers 2003 Blue Devils 2004 Cavaliers 2005 Cadets ~G~ Edited August 19, 2006 by byline
garfield_cadets
Thanks byline! I did a search but must not have put in the right keywords.
LancerFi
Geoff is correct, SCV did win high guard in 81 in Montreal. I cannot remember 82 so good, but I believe G had it correct! Top GE did not decide what corps took High Guard, but if there was a tie, the Top GE score wins! So really, there is no tie. They announced SCV in 78. We also had a 2.00 but they take the guard trophy! We happened to win guard in 80 and win the High GE Trophy, but that was kind of a fluke I think-for us anyway. We took high guard in 79 and I'm not sure where we were in GE or who won GE but I would have to say it was BD - LaMachine. Oh boy I must be losing it!!! I'm with you on the Madison thing. I was trying to think back just this morning about Madison and how many times they won! I think we also discussed that there was 1 person at most shows picking the best guard, no? I believe they were listed on most recaps. 2.00 was as high as you could go. Most recaps show maybe 1 - 2.00 then 3 - 1.9, maybe 5 - 1.7 and so on. It was always very close! So many great guards!!

Who else even touched your guard that year? Yes, there were a lot of great guards in '80, but IMO, yours was obviously the best!
byline
What is the Spirit in parens for in Geoff's list? Oh boy I must be losing it!!! I'm not sure why they're in parentheses. I seem to recall a discussion about where Spirit's guard placed those years (they had a great run during that time; I believe they were instructed by Sal Salas). I thought that discussion was part of that thread, but I don't see it there. Maybe Geoff provided that list in the other thread where Spirit was discussed, then copied his list in case this topic ever came up again, and then pasted it in that thread but forgot to delete the references to Spirit. Or maybe he just really, really liked Spirit those years and thought they should've won. Edited August 19, 2006 by byline
LancerLegend
I think if there was a little more research done, it would show that the very first DCI Color Guard Champion was awarded in 1975 and it went to the 27th Lancers. It was a year before LancerFi wore her boots, but I am hoping she will remember this, or ask some of the others that marched in 1975. Looking at my DCI Yearbooks, the first time the score was noted was in the 1979 yearbook - which highlited the recaps from 1978. From page 60, this is the order of the finals, with the guard score 1. SCV 2.0 2. PR 1.9 3. BD 1.9 4. Mad 1.8 5. Bridge 1.9 6. Spirit 1.8 7. 27th 2.0 8. Blue Star 1.7 9. Crossmen 1.9 10. North Star 1.7 11. Guardsmen 1.9 12. Kilties 1.

All the research was done, by me, years before ramd and DCP. The list is accurate and guard was awarded starting back in 1972. ~G~
GMichael1230
Color Guard was not an official caption on the DCI score sheets until 2000.78 TIE - Santa Clara Vanguard/27th Lancers 79 TIE - Santa Clara Vanguard/27th Lancers/Phantom Regiment 80 27th Lancers 81 ? 82 ? 83 Madison Scouts 84 Blue Devils 85 Spirit of Atlanta 86 Blue Devils 87 Spirit of Atlanta 88 Phantom Regiment 89 Cadets of Bergen County 90 Blue Devils 91 Cadets of Bergen County 92 Blue Devils 93 Cadets of Bergen County 94 Cadets of Bergen County 95 Cavaliers 96 Cadets of Bergen County 97 Blue Devils 98 Blue Devils 99 Blue Devils 00 Cavaliers 01 Cavaliers 02 Cavaliers 03 Blue Devils 04 Blue Devils 05 Cadets 06 Blue Devils Your list is not accurate, this topic has been brought up over and over with so many "offical" lists, but it still hasnt changed since I posted it over and over. 78 and 79 were not a tie, 81 went to SCV, 82 went to BD, 95 was awarded to Blue Devils, 2001 was awarded to Blue Devils, and 2004 went to the Cavaliers. ~G~
