Magic's 2007 Info Meeting

Recommended Posts

When was the last post about where the meeting was held? Seems about 100 pages ago.

Sad part is all the people who cared enough to post questions about the corps and can't get an answer. And we're not just talking casual onlookers, some are people who did actual volunteer grunt work and don't have a flippin' idea of what's going on.

IMO corps BoD needs to open up some lines of communication if 2007 is going to be a reality.

Anytime I had a question, administration was right there to answer it. I'll again challenge each of you to try to run a drum corps.

For those with unanswered questions-

Magic has staff for 07, a show for 07, 40 vets are coming back, a rehearsal schedule, and a tour schedule. None of this has been announced because we are waiting on one key essential. If you cared enough to be at the meeting, or took the time to write an email to administration, they would have filled you in.

I'm not a public relations guy, and I don't always know how to word things correctly, I'm just a passionate corps kid who wants his corps to succeed. It's very easy to mistake critisism as bashing on this thread (I'll remind you the past thread- "WHY MAGIC IS GOING TO WIN DCI").

As far as seeing people MOST DEFINATELY bash our administration... You try running a drum corps. I do know that our board of director's have gotten us everything we needed, we got to and from every event safely, and had a successful season. I will bet that not many other administrator's put nearly the amount of money into a corps than our administration.

For those who still want information about the 07 season, feel free to eMail me at DiMoltoFuoco@hotmail.com. I'll let you know what you can do to help the situation.

Okay, kiddo, breathe! You aren't doing your corps any favors to get on here and rant. The discussion about venue ended on page 10 and most of that was off-topic. The last 8 or 9 pages has been an honest discussion. Did you read all of it?

People are asking honest questions. I think some things are being blown out of proportion, but no one is bashing the corps. This is one of the most tame discussions I've seen about Magic of all time.

FYI to all, the corps website has been updated to reflect what we have been discussing. Everything is in place except for financial and volunteer support.

I would add that while it is personally admirable for individuals in corps management to be giving of their own money to keep the corps functioning, the reality is that by doing so they're providing a short term solution to a long term problem that they themselves are ultimately responsible for: the lack of adequate fundraising.

This has been Magic's achilles heel since day one...they have depended on the generosity of a few individuals rather than establishing the financial mechanisms necessary to support a div. I junior corps. Thankfully, the corps has seemed to recognize this of late and attempts have been made to generate some steady independent revenue streams(bingo, Magical charters, etc.), they just haven't panned out for various reasons.

I really think the corps should investigate forming a performing group to take advantage of the many opportunities for conventions and film/television jobs that are available in the central florida area. There are tons and tons of these out there and they can be extremely lucrative. There's no doubt that coordinating schedules and travel can be extremely difficult, but BD, Phantom, Renegades, Heat Wave and I'm sure others I'm not aware of have all managed to work out ways to do it and raise significant funds.

It is, once again, absolutely ridiculous to state that you cannot discuss, or even be critical, of somebody/something without having done it yourself. If that were the case, the only people making any comments about George W. Bush would have to be his father, Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, and Gerald Ford. I suppose some people might believe that is a good idea, but most would not. I really wish that line of thinking could be put to rest permanently.

I am curious how much money has come directly out of the personal funds of a few people to keep the corps going. I would then wonder if that money could have been better spent starting up, or purchasing, businesses that could have provided the corps a steady revenue. It might not be paying all the bills, but maybe it would have helped provide a foundation that wasn't shifting under their feet. More so than in any other market where a drum corps resides, I cannot help feeling that the possible opportunities are endless. It is probably much harder to go back and retrofit this into a "mature" organization than it would've been when it was originally being formed.

I'm not saying any of this would be easy, but getting a foundation under the corps has to be better than what they've been dealing with up to this point.

Good to hear that the news is getting out. Hope the financial and volunteer areas are being working on.

I wouldn't say that any corps' board of directors works harder than another's.

This comment is naive. Of course some BoDs work harder than other. Some work smarter too. That's why some corps have good financial backign and others still trot out bingo games once or twice a week in states that have allowed casino and OTB betting for over five years. They are stuck into...well this always worked...but it doesn't anymore.

I visited Magic's web site and noticed that they used the word "urgent" which sounds appropriate, and the phrase "We are ready to order new equipment...", which is understandable. But I'm "ready" to order a new Mazzeratti too. That doesn't mean that you'll see me driving around in one at any time in the near future. I know that sounds pessemistic, but given the time frame that they'ye faced with, the financial challenges seem quite formidable. I sincerely hope that they can pull it off, and wish them all the best.

First of all, Magic has open spots on the board of directors, and any of you could voulenteer to help make a difference, but no, not one of you want the responsibility.

Jared,

How do you expect anyone to know this? It has never - and still is not - posted anywhere on their site.

If you cared enough to be at the meeting, or took the time to write an email to administration, they would have filled you in.

Are 100% of Magic alumni or interested parties in Orlando? So, we should get on a plane and fly across country to attend a meeting only described as a "question and answer session". And if we dont' it means we don't care.

I also had someone contact me who wrote an email to Curt (at the email address he had posted for the question and answer session) on OCTOBER 11th and has yet to receive a reply. Today is the 21st - so that is 10 days on my calendar. She is still waiting to get "filled in".

Here's something to think about, Jared, before you go off and pop a vein. Even though you may not like what everyone has said about Magic, if they didn't care whether Magic existed or not, would they bother reading or posting on this thread. Heck, maybe some people will volunteer to help Magic out just so they'll be around to bash! (just kidding, Jared.)

Love 'em or hate 'em, people DO have an opinion about Magic and care enough to comment. I'd rather have that then see no responses to a post because people could care less whether the corps remains active or fades away.

If you took the time to read through the majority of this thread, you would see a lot of frustrated people who have tried to help Magic and who have tried to receive communication from Magic.

Magic site says to contact the asst director with ideas and pledges. Tell Curt to set up a PayPal donation button on the web site. Emailing Curt - who doesn't reply back - is just an extra step. Plus, aren't they looking for DONATIONS and not PLEDGES?

Jared, while I appreciate your passion for Magic and I know you are trying to accomplish good, smarting off on this forum is probably not the best way to drum up support for The Magic.
