The 70s

Recommended Posts

Recording quality also has a lot to do with it. I have a hard time watching shows from the seventies due to poor sound, goofy haircuts and simplistic drill.

Not to mention microphone placement. Going by the liner notes on my old DCA albums almost every year in the late 70s the number of mics and placement was changed. Reason was almost always given as "truer sound" which translates to "#### still didn't get it right". Except for two years (76/77) DCA Finals was only show recorded. IOW, DCA didn't have much chance to experiment.

Marching bells were also a major problem on the recordings. They basically went up and down the 50 with the drum line and since the mics were right off the 50, guess what got picked up waaay too well. Still remember letters to DCN complaining about the "Drum and Tink Tink corps" on the recordings.

What sound do the snares have today  ? They don't sound like anything - maybe a table top.

I have some beautiful stone tile in the walkway in my house. Hit it with a pair of Ralphies and it sounds just like a free-floater.

See Z, if I marched with Blue Stars, I would have wash my hair, perform with the turban and have a clean dry look at the end of the contest. :P

No seriously, that was a cool look for them and fit the repertoire.

It made a lot more sense with the draped robes they wore first tour. Wish they'd have kept them!
