Iplaytimpani
I'm a fan of Sibelius, I use 3, along with virtual drumline. I used to use finale, but once someone taught me how to really use Sibelius, I have found it to be a better program for my percussion writing. Grandpa
Follow up question to this very old thread.... What's the best FREE notation software (and sounds) for battery? Yes - I'm cheap. Edited June 8, 2011 by Grandpa

Find a friend who would be willing to share with you, other than that, it will be tough Edited June 8, 2011 by Fastone
Cadet311
Pretty sure using your friend's version or installing it on your machine is a violation of the user agreement.
Grandpa
So I let the moths out of my wallet and paid a whole $10 for Finale Notepad. It mostly does what I want with some compromising. I score the bass as timpani to get the voicing, and the cymbals as percussion to get crash and choke effects. The Sea Cadet band I'll be teaching in the fall will probably have 3 snare, 2 bass 1 cymbal if we're lucky so it's not that big a deal so far. But if anyone else uses it, how do you get around the limitations? I don't have to write for quads yet but I think that could be a problem, and to write a roll I have to insert a whole bunch of 32nd notes as I can find no other way. I'm actually writing in quarter notes and inserting the text "ROLL" above them - lol! It still looks better than my hand-written scores of years past, and the midi playback is helpful. Pointers would be appreciated. Cheers! Grandpa.
