Vanguard Brass Arrangers through the Years?

I was wondering if anyone knew who wrote the Brass Arrangements and for what years say from 85-03??

I know Tim Salzman did for a few years in the mid 80's..when he was writing for Cavies also.

Gail did the brass arrangements until 1992, with a few exceptions.

When I was teaching in the mid to late 80s, we would take Gail's scores and enter them into the computer. Gordon Henderson or Tim Salzman did that, although in one case (the Hut of the Bab Yaga), we traded off - each of the four of us entered a page. As you entered it into the computer, adjustments were often made to what Gail had written. But he was the main arranger.

After he was gone, there were a number of folks, and I don't remember all - but Jay Kennedy did some arrangements for Dr. Len. and Gordon did a lot of arranging for the corps in the mid to late 90s.

Then there's that Key Poulan fellow.

2 off the top of my head were Gail Royer & Gordon Henderson. Don't know exactly when.

No question about it, Gail Royer was my favorite of all of Vanguard's arrangers. IMO, three of the best arrangers in all of drum corps are GR, Jim Wren and Jim Prime.

I'm glad you said "three of the best", 'cuz I'd have Hy Dreitzer and Sandra Opie (Argonne Rebels) on my list along with GR.

I know Gordon Henderson arranged some (maybe even all?) of the Phantom of the Opera show in 89. When I was talking with him in 2005 about the fact that they were playing the closer from the 89 show as part of their Encore Performance lineup, he said

"That's pretty much exactly the same arrangement I did for you guys in 89... just in the key of B flat."

The arrangements in 89 were pretty similar to 88. Those were written by Gail and "entered into the computer" by Gordon (and possibly Tim or Rick). But I am pretty sure GH wouldn't have sole arranging credit.

Maybe he meant that he adapted the SCV arrangement for UCLA?

We could ask him - that would be the best answer.

I have a sort of add on question to Zeke's original question. Did Gordon Henderson teach/specialise with the lower brass at Vanguard? the reason i ask is, i thought the lower Brass section of SCV in '88 '89 and most impressively 1990 produced such a thunderous deep sound. and i noticed that Gordon Henderson was also on the brass staff of the Cavaliers in '93 which is another lower brass section that i like and again back with SCV in '96. So i thought there might be a link between these lower brasslines.
