Rocketman
They were AWESOME in 1974, jumping from 13th in 73 to 7th in 74. So, what were the situations that caused them to be part of the merger resulting in the Oakland Crusaders in 75? Inquiring minds want to know. Northern Thunder
According to volume 2 of the Drum Corps World History of Drum & Bugle Corps, De La Salle College could no longer afford to fund the corps after the '74 season. More and more non-students were members by that time, and the school found they could foot the bill no longer. The corps members decided they still wanted to continue as a corps, and the Etobicoke Crusaders were looking to merge, thus the Oakland Crusaders were born. De La Salle was fantastic in '71! If not for that particular corps DCI would never have been called Drum Corps "International". Northern Thunder
I didn't realize they were sponsored by a school! Interesting! Even the "Oaklands" nickname is from the college. https://www.delasalle.ca/
KeithHall
A couple of things..... Seneca Princemen were part of Seneca College I believe but not sure of the particulars. Del wowed me at the 1974 American-International Open. At the end of the finals show the heat was so high that many members passed out as Joelle cut them off,
lindap
Joelle? I thought his name was Joel? Excuse me while I do a fact check:PWe joined 2 different drum corps, in different years, from the same city. I started drum corps guard fall of 1968. He started drum corps guard fall of 1969. I became winter guard captain 1971-1972 and drum major for my corps April 1972. He became winter guard captain 1972-1973 and drum major for his corps 1973. We'd see each other at winter guard or local drum corps contest retreats while in GC or DM lines:)
KeithHall
Darn, didn't realize I typed that...sorry Joel!!! Thank you Lindap! I do get a bit smarter when she corrects me! LOL But the similarities end in 1974....1975 Joel DMs Oakland Crusaders to top 12 at DCI.

Yeah, Fran. They knocked me out when they came off the line with Miserlou! The crowd on the U.S. Open recording went nuts for Del!
Fran Haring
Yeah, Fran. They knocked me out when they came off the line with Miserlou! The crowd on the U.S. Open recording went nuts for Del! From what I remember, they and St. Rita's Brassmen were the two corps that really brought the house down that night in Marion. It was a great show overall.. but those two corps in particular were on fire.
