torn8o
I found this very interesting... Sunday June 28, 1987 West Chester PA DCE Position Corps Score 1 Spirit of Atlanta 77.000 2 Garfield Cadets 74.900 3 Suncoast Sound 70.300 4 Dutch Boy 63.400 5 Florida Wave 62.200 6 Crossmen 53.600 7 Malden Diplomats 47.200 8 St. Francis Xavier Sancians 39.800 How often can you find a year where somewhere during the course of a season the 10th place corps beats the 1st place corps? Let alone by a spread like that! Isn't that strange? Is it just me, or were these types of fluxuations more common in years past than today? 84BDsop
Eh...back in the day Cadets typically started slow...unlike BD and current cavies, who come out like gangbusters.

GMichael1230
1987 Spirit is a strange situation indeed. They started out on fire, ready to go right out of the gate and were really solid in all areas. Garfield had a slow start and altered their show many times......come finals week, nobody expected Spirit to be so low in the rankings. 6th - 10th were seperated by about a point or so, with ties and when the dust settled, it was suprising that they were the ones in tenth, winning high guard. I had the opportunity to see them alot that year and they had such a solid, crowd pleasing show. We were shocked they came in so low. Madison Scouts, Star of Indiana, Velvet Knights, Suncoast Sound, Spirit of Atlanta..could have went any way. I'm glad it finally ended as it did though !! Odd year to say the least. ~G~

Check 1982. Knights went from a 78 to a 61 in three days. In 82, as 83, they were consistently ahead of many corps that ultimately passed them. If there is a conspiracy theory floating around DCI, this is sure one of them. ~G~
VKMello84
And have you ever looked at the prelims scores for 1987? It's great comedy. 1 Garfield Cadets 97.000 2 Santa Clara Vanguard 96.500 3 Phantom Regiment 95.600 4 Blue Devils 95.000 5 Cavaliers 93.900 6 Star of Indiana 90.300 7 Madison Scouts 89.400 8 Suncoast Sound 89.200 8 Velvet Knights 89.200 10 Spirit of Atlanta 89.100 11 Bluecoats 89.000 12 Sky Ryders 85.300 Either Velvet Knights or Suncoast had a one tenth penalty, I can't recall which. LOL, exactly what I just was talking about ! Talk about confusion, excitement, intensity and incentive. ~G~

Check out the trajectory of our scores from the summers of 1982 and 1983. Particularly from Whitewater Pelims 83, to Finals that night, to Rockford the next night. Bitter? Why do you ask? And the answer is, "because they could."
Beau R
Spirit was close to Cadets all year until the end. In fact, if you go back and compare scores for Spirit vs. the rest of the final Top 12, Spirit was sitting in 6th place until last two or three shows. As a Spirit 87 member, I can tell you this: we didn't like "falling" from 6th to 10th in the last week of the season. Look as the spreads between Spirit and Cadets, Blue Devils SCV, Cavaliers and Phantom from Aug 1-11, then look at what happened to the spreads at Semi Finals and Finals. We certainly didn't get 4 or 5 points worse in the last week of the season while everyone else went up.

It is almost like the judges were scoring based on the prior year and then at the last chance decided to do a new evaluation.
