You'd be suprised...they're not that different....sometimes on a tuba.....believe it or not. You play more than long tones. I have had quite a few friends I marched with, sops and mellos with tongue piercings. I marched both mello and sop with a 6g barbell in my mouth. Never had problems. If you do get it done...then decide it's not for u...it will close up within hours of taking it out. You won't even notice it was there after a few days. THe topic is "Brass" players with tongue rings...just giving an opinion and my experiences as a "brass" player.

I got my tongue pierced in the middle of my senior year of HS. I was playing tuba in a few ensembles and horn in the other, and marching contra with a drum corps.... I never really had a problem with it. Obviously yes...your tongue will be sore for few days after after the initial piercing. It should never be swollen for very long. It did takes a few days of playing to get used to having such a large piece of metal in my mouth after I figured it out there were no problems. (recently took out my 6g tongue piercing...standard piercing since is a 14 or 12g barbell). After having it for 3 years playing with out it is taking some getting used to. THe hardest part about a tongue piercing as with any piercing is keeping it clean and making sure it is fully healed before u take it out or change the jewelry. The piercing stud is goign to be quite a bit longer to accomodate the swelling. I would reccomend going back to see your piercer after it is healed and have him/her change it for the first time. Especially if you're unsure that it's completly healed I put plastic or acrylic balls on the ends so that the metal didn't wear on my teeth and gums as much. Once healed I was able to either take it out for small periods of time or put a lighter plastic barbell in. Spacers dont' seem to work very well, most of them are of bad quality and the flat peice on the top just gets in the way. I reccomend going on a weekend...or if you know that you won't have to play for a few days. Just make sure that you keep your piercing clean and listen to your artist when he tells you how to care for it. With tongue piercings you will be brushing your teeth and/or rinsing your mouth with an antiseptic mouth wash or a sea salt rinse like H2ocean everytime you put something in your mouth other than water. Don't forget no kissing while it's healing. If you think it's infected or there is somethign wrong...dont' immediatly take it out. Go back to your piercer and let he/she look at it. Sometimes it will be irritated because a piece of food has been trapped or even something as innocent as sleeping and moving your tongue around can cause a small tear until it's healed. In the case of an infection...if you take it out and let it close up there is a good chance that the infection will be trapped inside, then there are all sorts of not fun ways to take care of it. I'm not sure what state u live in, but there are only a few states that actually require a license to ink or pierce. Use your own judgement...check out the shop....make sure it's clean and the area where you are getting pierced is sanitized and clean prior to the piercing. ASk your piercer about classes they've taken (Usually most piercers apprenticed for a few years before beign let on their own) dealing with blood borne pathogens and make sure that they are using equipment that has been steralized in a ultrasonic sterilizer (are used in hospitals and doctors offices). The needles need to be one time use, and must be disposed of properly in a hazordous waste container, that you should be shown. Ask to see a portfolio. Look through it see hwat kind of work they've done, ask around and see what kind of reputation the shop has. If you feel at all uncomfortable about anything the piercer has done or said.....find another shop. I know it was kinda a long post....I have been pierced over 30 times and spent a few years hanging out and living with a body piercer. It was allways hard seeing people come in with messed up piercings and tats....because they didnt' take care of them, or had someone unexpericed (like a friend or themselves) do the work. Wow...I haven't checked the forums in quite sometime. Bill was a relaly awesome person. I was the lone "youngin" most rides up to Wi for Kampz and he and the other guys allways made me feel soo welcome. H eused to tell me old corps stories and tell me that I reminded him of some person or another that he marched with through the years. He will be missed. I live only 20 min or so from Ft. Custer. I'll be there...and if anyone else is comin up this way...and needs a place to stay...we don't have much...but there is allways floor space and a futon for some weary drum corps travellers. Let me know if anyone else is going to be there. a "dermal punch" is a needle....only it's a bit different. I would never get pierced with a gun. There is no way to steralize a piercing gun. Like i siad...I've had extensive body mods, and I give mad proops to anyone that goes though with it. I was engaged to a body piercere for the past 2 years...so i've seen and had some crazy stuff done. I think i met u at Dca some time.....probably did. Hey Rich! I haven't talked to you in forever. Asking me if I want to march with u guys...is like asking if I'm a Vampiric lesbian.....#### yeah I would love to! Chris Nalls extended an invitation to me earlier this year. I'm seriously thinkin about movin out there in the next year or so. Unfortunatly I'm on a very short leash right now. My fiance isn't too fond of the activity. I've been begging him to come with me out to the West Coast. I think that I would fit in quite well with everyone. It doesn't get more evil than me ^0^ . Speaking of the renegades...I wanted to thank you guys (Rich, Ona, Tapper, and the others) for bringing us into your circle when you were singing "Ave Maria" before prelims. Chester and I really apperciated all the kind words and support. At that point all I wanted was hugs and you guys gave me plenty. It was kinda cool that I had sang that version of "Ave Maria" a few years ago with an amazing margrigal ensemble. If I can come up with the cash I wanna come out to a camp this fall. Rich, you'll be in charge of finding me someplace to crash. All I need is some floor space, and not much at that. I'm afraid that if I go out there, I'm never gonna want to come back to Mich. Where are the best music schools around there? I'm an instrumental music major with a minor in choral conducting. Someday I've gotta buckle down and start seriously working on my degree. Did I mention that after 7 years of corps.....I'll finailly be 21 and able to buy my own drinks...HOpe to see you guys soon. I too am from the Battle Creek/Kzoo area. I wish that I knew of any SW Michigan bands looking for instructors. If only you Linden were on the other side of the state. I wish I knew of any bands in SW Michigan looking for instructors

Both POst and Kelloggs call BC their home. We also are home to Ralston Foods, A division of KRAFT Foods and Archway cookies used to call us home. Kelloggs allso has 2 locations in town along with their headquarters. If you drive by the POst plant you can smell the burning cereal. The Kelloggs plant smells much better

Aww...driving in the winter is soo much fun. The delivery drivers at the place I used to work would keep track of how many mailboxes and trashcans we would knock over in the winter. It's allways fun to watch people from out of state drive around here. They all go 20mph everywhere. \

This is the stadium for Battle Creek Central Highschool. The school is right in the middle of downtown BC. The stadium is actually not right at the school. Like a lot of inner city schools the field and fieldhouse are few blocks away. The address for the school is: 100 West VanBuren St. Battle Creek, MI 49017 The closest hotels to the stadium are the Amerihost at 182 W. VanBuren and the McCamly Plaza Hotel http://www.mccamlyplazahotel.com/ Iwould definetly reccomend a change of hotels if you are planning on staying at the GuestHouse Inn (90 N. Division) I would change your reservations. It's not in the greatest location. I used to deliver pizza, and I really dreaded going there (locked the doors and took my topper off when I went inside). For some odd reason it won't let me reply to your post...so the info about the area around the stadium was sent to you in aPM. AS it gets closer to the date of the show I grow even more excited. I have a friend bussing up from GA to spend the week so that we can go to the G-men rehersal before the show. I just found an earlier post about people complaining aobut the stadium and what not. Yeah, it's not WMU...yeah, the stadium is small, but at least they were able to find a place in the relativly same part of the state. I'm sure that the BC Central band bossters and jthe administration will do everything possible to make DCI and the fans welcome. The stadium is in the middle of the city, so I'm sure it's going to be a logisitcs nightmare for corps and fan parking. I know that they have had band competitions here before....but the way that works...all the band busses drup off the bands at the gate, they walk into the fieldhouse to warm up, then go on....It's going to be intersting seeing how they are going to fit all the busses, trucks and other corps vehicles in and around the staduim parking. BC Central is a very large school but just doesn't have a lot of room otherwise. Any other questions feel free to ask. You're very welcome. I miss marching sooo much. I don't even age out of Jr's until next year...unfortunatly I think my jr corps days are done. Tommorow I go for my second appt with a pain doc. Last week I was given 16 injections in my back, without being sedated( stupid nurse doesn't know how to put in an IV). I was then give a script for some fentynol patches and some ultram...I'm headed to the pain clinic again tommorow for more injection fun.....what i'm gettin at is...I'm definetly on my way to recovery..... as soon as I am better...it's my goal to find 7other hott contrachics.....and start a conspiracy the be THE hottest contraline in DCA. I'm hopin to pick up the MOn valley chics and maybe christine and ONa?....find a few more...we're unstopable

It also has a lot to do with the artist. I cannot express how important it is to go to a clean reputable shop. Check out the possibe artists portfolio and ask around about the shop and artist. My first tatoo was done on my left calf. It hurt a ton, the next one on my back (on my spine) seemed to hurt less. They were done by two different artists. The first had a vert heavy hand. He pretty much made hamburger out of my flesh. It was a real job to fix what he did. THe other artists have had a really light touch and the pain was a lot less. If the artist is too light with the needle the ink will not stick, if the needle goes too deep it can leave scars and not heal too well. Sometimes it takes more than one sitting. If the tat is large, or your skin gets too irritated some artists will do it in mulstiple sittings, waiting for the outline or one part to heal before doing more or finishing your tat. Just make sure that you go to someone who knows what they're doing, and will do exactly what you want. Also, You get what you pay for. Most shops have a shop minimun(usually $40-$50) they must charge to ensure that the artist gets a decent cut of the profit. The more detail, and the more solid color in your design, the more it will cost. If you go into a shop and ask what the cheapest tatoo is...you shouldn't be there..Go into the shop with an open mind and be ready to spend quite a bit to get exactly what you want. Sometimes just asking to make the design smaller or bigger will change the price drastically. Also, very often where you put the design factors into the cost. It's much harder to tatoo on a neck, hand, foot, females chest, or other places where there are a lot of bone or where the skin stretches when you move. Happy huntiong for anyone searching for a shop. If any of you are going to the Battle Creek MI show on July 15th and are thinkin about gettin a tat...hit me up. I know an awesome shop not too far from the stadium. They're a great group of guys who will give you an awesome price. Fruity Pebbles....where do I begin.....I live in Battle Creek MI....Fruity Pebbles are great in the morning for breakfast, but not soo much when you walk outside and smell them burning. I'd be all about some Bluestars MOrning (Smells soo delicious when you drive by theplant)...Speaking of Battle Creek Michigan....July 15 Drum Corps comes to the cereal capital of the world. (home to Kellogs, Post, Kraft, and Ralston Foods). If Drum corps were a cereal, I would definetly try them all....at least the sugary ones....

TO answer your question. If I were to go though a metal detector at an airport....It wouldn't go off. You'd be suprised the amount of people that ask me if I can play with all of those in. Yes I can. It took a little getting used to but I've got the same big sound, I think some people are afraid of me now. So, I leave my house for a day...come back, and this thread has definetly gone in an interesting direction. It's even more amusing now that I got new pain killers and some morphine patches :) Some day i'm gonna get better and go join the hotties in the contraline at MVE.
