  2. http://www.colts.org/news/news.cfm?news_id=627 Cadets Kick Off 2012 Season June 25, 2012 Colt Cadets Staff With the annual Dubuque Summer Premiere and a DCI show in the bag, the Colt Cadets are thrilled as ever to take their 2012 program on the road. With three shows in the upcoming week, the members and staff look forward to expanding upon what has already been deemed by one DCI judge as "The Colt Cadets' best start to a season ever!" Members of the Colt Cadets brass line were exceptionally privileged this past weekend, being given the opportunity to work with Terry White, brass arranger of their 2012 show entitled, "Alive!" Terry flew from Maine to spend four days with the group and to team up with brass caption head Kent Crawford in making final tweaks to the brass book. Kent Crawford, Colt Cadets Brass Caption Head, was thrilled with Terry's visit: "Terry is absolutely fantastic to work with, an all around great guy who is very generous with his time and thoughts, pressures no one, but at the same time knows how to take things up to the next level. He is a perfect fit with this staff, and an incredible asset to the Colt Cadets." Other brass staff members felt similarly. "We are extremely lucky to have Terry on our side. He's simply a great music educator and the members absolutely loved him. His four days with the group has brought tremendous improvement for the brass line, as well as the drum corps as a whole," reflected Andy Eaton, Colts/Colt Cadets Mellophone Technician. The Colt Cadets continue their competitive season this Thursday, June 28 in Merrillville, Indiana, Saturday June 30th in Michigan City, Indiana, and Sunday July 1st in Muscatine, Iowa. For more on the Colt Cadets 2012 season click here: http://www.colts.org/cadets/show.cfm Terry White, Biography: Terry White has been a music educator, composer, arranger and band leader in the Portland, Maine area for over 34 years. 3. I love playing in this stadium and watching in this stadium-----GO GOVIES!!!!!! GO MICHELE!!! Hopefully after the show my parents will call me with some interesting comments to share from the show, I don't think they have missed more than 1 show at Mankato State, and they are still generallyl confused by the scores and placements each time :)
  4. I have lots of friends who teach music (Me = Drum corps alumni/fan + science teacher), and I know at least a couple who have marched drum corps will do a day or a couple days of lessons on drum corps. The younger kids learn about the differnet instruments and the pitches (high/low), and the different types of drums, and they watch a couple shows. I know at least one teacher that also shows photos of herself and DCA videos to show that even "old people" can still make music. The kids eat it up---ones that think the Nutcraker was slow and boring see "The Machine" and think it is just about the coolest thing ever. Anyway----what if someone made up some ready-to-use drum corps lessons for teachers? Maybe somthing that a subsitute could do with little to no prep, with video clips, powerpoint slides, SMARTBoard stuff, worksheets...just a random mix of some things that could be adapted for time and age group to showcase what drum corps is along with a teachable concept (Pitch, tone, instruments, tempo, etc.) that would generally fit in with any state standard (Not that most states have standards for music like they do for math and such, but a few do). The older kids could focus more on marching technique for places with a competitive program, or other general music things that a band director could pop up on a screen and have kids watch while she/he is doing a sectional with a smaller group, or for a fun lesson at the end of the school year when everything has been turned in for the summer. This might also work to do something for PE classes, dance classes (Not so much in the Midwest, but in Texas all the high schools seemed to offer dance), etc. Teachers always need something for students with injuries or absenses or whatever to do to make up for not participating in exercise during class. Toss in some shots of the Marine Corps to reach the Jr. ROTC kids, or make some physicis of sound lessons (Speed of sound, phasing issues, how corps adjust on the field to compensate, etc.). Theatre arts classes could discuss how different stoylines are acted out with little/no words. Have the lessons available for download on the web for anyone to use, and the word will spread because all teachers love free stuff that is ready to use and adapt for their classroom. Hopefully you would have kids all over the country (World?) seeing drum corps in their regular classes, and teachers seeing some educational value to DCI that they maybe did not make a connection with before. Even if you only get real interest from 1% of the kids that see it, it is a pretty cheap way to reach that 1% that would have otherwise had no idea drum corps existed.
  5. After a performance in Dubuque tonight, the Colts head east----Tennessee, South Carolina, Boston, Etc. This might be a chance for someone to join the corps as it passes through their state-no travel required! http://www.colts.org/tour.asp
  6. It is pretty cool to see about 500 people in the stands of a small-town high school enjoying themselves....with hot dog tents from the local fire department, kids playing on the equipment and dancing near the field, nursing home residents lined up for the best seats, corn in the background, all the small-town charm stuff, then a huge wall of sound from the field (And that is just the Colt Cadets ) Here is a shot from the "Brass n Brats" show a couple weeks ago: We also washed about 900 cars last Saturday, with Colts and Colt Cadets working together in 19 teams across 40 miles. Good Times...
  7. Colts are wrapping up Cornfield Tour, where they have camp in several towns and do "Dog and Pony" shows for for the locals. This is a great way to thank the communities that support us and expose new folks to drum corps. The Colts were in DeWitt last night, and have history night tonight. Tomorrow night is the Summer Premiere at Loras College in Dubuque, then hit the road to drive overnight to the East Coast. There are several Colt Cadets from the Madison area, so when the opportunity to do the show came up we were excited to say "YES!" The kids are loading buses right now, so if you are on highway 151 in the next hour keep your eyes open!
  8. http://www.colts.org/news/news.cfm?news_id=626 Announcing the understudy program! The Colts are seeking a few people to fill out our brass and guard sections. In addition we are seeking understudies in all sections. This is a great opportunity for you to spend the summer touring with the corps while training for a position should one open up this summer, or training for future seasons. The cost to do this is very low at $17.50 per day through the end of tour on August 11. Given the timing, these fees may be financed through the end of this calendar year. Many prospective members are not sure if they are good enough to jump into a spot, so they stay away. This creates a no-risk option and is a great way to ease yourself into the program, while training for a position. This is also a very low cost way to make drum corps available for you this summer. You may earn a spot for this season, or if now, you’ll still learn a lot and have a great experience while being well-prepared for auditions for next year. For more information, please contact us at greg@colts.org or 563-564-9156. Don't miss this opportunity to jump on board for a great summer of music, competition and excellence! We have to fill these last positions, but folks who may be interested are understandably hesitant because they fear they will not be able to catch up at this point in the season and they want to be successful. To encourage new members to try, even when they’re not sure, we need a fail-safe option. This understudy program is the solution. We are looking for two mellophones and two tuba players plus two color guard. And we have room for more who are preparing for next year. What better way to prepare new people for the Colts than to have them with us. There is no obligation for them or for us, yet we are creating every opportunity for a new member to earn a position. We have extra seats on the buses, so let’s fill them with great members. An investment in the future for sure, and also a chance to march in one of the remaining spots this year, but without any pressure. Please have anyone interested contact us today, or let us contact them. With a couple of calls, you can create a life changing experience for someone today.
  9. The Colt Cadets are at the normal field in Dubuque this morning, and will make the 75 min bus trip this afternoon. First show is going to be GREAT---don't show up late or you'll miss it! (Here is unloading at 8:45 am today, more photos throughout the day will be posted on the Colts facebook page) When a group of mad scientists sets out to create the ultimate drum corps beast, the results are fantastically disturbing. Things come unglued as the creatures wreak havoc on the field. But most don't realize that all they really want is to find their place. Acceptance brings peace. And peace brings fulfillment. The Colt Cadets tell this supernatural tale through the music of Reber Clark (Escape From Chronopolis), Alan Silvestri (Themes from Van Helsing), Beethoven (Piano Sonata No. 8, Op. 13, "Pathetique"), Bernard Hermann (Theme from Psycho), and Frank Wildhorn (Facade from the musical, Jekyll & Hyde). Evolution finds strange new meaning when the Colt Cadets present their 2012 program, ALIVE!
  10. http://www.colts.org/news/news.cfm?news_id=624 Colts Cornfield Tour Video June 16, 2012 Colts Staff The Colts would like to thank the administration of the University of Dubuque and Loras College, along with host schools Belmont, WI, DeWitt, IA and Clear Creek Amana in Tiffin for their cooperation in making our Cornfield Tour a great success. With one week to go until the Colts head east for DCI competition, the 2012 program is nearing completion. The membership is working hard and the staff is fine tuning the final product that will make its debut at our 2nd Annual Summer Premiere on Saturday, June 23 at Loras College. The Colt Cadets will perform their 2012 program at 7:30 p.m. with the Colts to follow. Plan to arrive early to enjoy some concessions and shop for Colts souvenirs while Pandemonium, our steel drum ensemble, entertains fans before the show. Check out this CORNFIELD TOUR VIDEO produced by Colts alum and Colt Cadets staff member, Matt Mulvann: Red Team! Get some!
  11. Colt Cadets have move-in today for the out-of-area students that were done with school. The kids stay with host families within about 30 minutes of Dubuque, mostly wonderful parents of other members that open their house up to a 3 month slumber party. We have some that will join the group over the next 2 weeks as they wrap up school, but there is a pretty good group working on drill right now in Dubuque. Lots of news and photos of both the Colts and Colt Cadets are on the Colts facebook page if you want to dig a bit deeper, or check this out: http://www.colts.org/cadets/show.cfm
  12. Colts will be in the Dubuque parade Monday, parade start at 1:30 with Colts as the last unit. Concert in the park following parade, including full pit and sovie truck. Details on the whole weekend can be found here: Colts Memorial Day Camp

  14. Not 100% official final numbers, but here is an estimate for the 2012 Colts 8-10 from Dubuque (Home and/or college address) 8-10 more from within 60 miles of Dubuque (Iowa/Wisconsin/Illinois) About 40-45 from Iowa or within 60 miles of Dubuque (Iowa/Wisconsin/Illinois) Several more from Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Missouri, as well as students from Virginia, California, Montana, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, The Netherlands...pretty much all over the place. Colt Cadets will likely be 80%+ from within 50 miles of Dubuque.
  15. LOL---At the last Colt Cadet camp I was thinking how cool it was that the kids had this dance soundtrack-mix thing for their stretching/cals that they do to start each day, and "back in the day" we would do our best to crank up the radio in some random car while unloading stuff and stretching in a parking lot. The tape players never had a "random mix" button to push for 1000+ songs
  16. No problem! Try this new link, the background music is one source for the show and will give you some guard hints as well:
  17. The Colts clips posted in this thread are of concert pieces and warm-ups, not from the show music. Our winter camp sites don't always lead to great video/audio recording, so you may not hear a whole lot of new stuff until we get outside next month. Our facebook page is generally the first/easiest place to find the good stuff :)
  18. Boundaries can limit. They can also protect. Boundaries can divide opposing forces, or provide a framework within which games are played. Boundaries define what one does or does not do, what is acceptable or unacceptable. They also define who is in, and who is out. Boundaries protect us from enemies, but also fence us in. Breaking boundaries confronts the establishment, while allowing us to explore magnificent artistic endeavors, to pursue the unattainable, and to achieve the unimaginable. Please join us in our exploration of boundaries... The Colts are pleased to present their 2012 program, "Boundaries," featuring: "August’s Rhapsody" (from the movie August Rush), by Mark Mancina "Boundaries," an original composition by David Nelson "Piano Concerto No. 2, Mvt. 2," by Sergei Rachmaninoff "All By Myself," by Eric Carmen

  21. The Colts Youth Organization will be selling their gently-used 2012 Yamaha brass and percussion lines, available in mid-August. We have limited 2011 equipment available as well. Reservations are being accepted now, please contact the Colts Office for current pricing. We also have over 30 different hand-made color guard flags and 10 uniforms for sale for immediate shipment, as well as various other uniform parts. For photos and more information: http://www.colts.org//store/site/index.cfm?killnav=1
  22. It is standard to leave them off the "public" schedule until evaluations are over. Gulf Coast Sound (DCA-Houston) showed up on the DCI website within a week of us passing the evaluation in 2006-ish, but we were tentatively scheduled in a show months before that. I suspect it will be the same with Revolution and Forte, and final evaluations are likely during the May camps because that is when the full guard and drumlines are back after WGI finals.
  23. Yep, Music on the March will be at Davenport Central High School instead of Dubuque Senior High School. We are really excited to work with the band boosters at Central for this event, and can't wait to take the brand new field in Dubuque in 2013. Tickets are on sale NOW: http://www.colts.org/tickets.asp Music on the March 2, which is a DCI Open Class seeding event, will also be at a new location to be named very soon.
  24. Next camp is April 27-28th, so you might get a show announcement after that I got goosebumps listening at the last camp, but I am not exactly a non-bias spectator... Anyway---shameless plug: Show tickets for Waukee IA, Davenport IA, and Olathe KS are on sale now on the Colts website. Come see the best drum corps perform in beautiful corn country! http://www.colts.org/tickets.asp
