  1. Thanks Jared, I was hooked on them long before the triple tongued soprano solos in their Rocky shows. That's one corps I really miss. So few younger drum corps fans of today know anything of some of the corps' of the '70s and 80's. It makes me feel real old. I do hope for the Matadors to be on the field again someday, along with the Westshoremen, Steel City Ambassadors, Troopers. Oh wait, Troopers are back. BRAVO!! Lee, after you're done with the Skyliners move on to Rhode Island and put the Matadors back into play.
  2. I understand in 1993 the trophy was sponsored by two people. One of them was Ed Teleky. I don't remember who the other one was. As I understand the story, or quite possibly myth, the Skyliners and some other corps had hot pits that year and the two instructors wanted a side competition between the two, so they bought a trophy and left it up to the field judge to decide which pit was best. I read in the tribute to Sean Holton that the Metropolitans won the best pit trophy that year. I don't know if all the facts as I understand them are correct, but it is a funny story.
  3. Talk about a killer app. Now if google can only deliver NY style pizza to Rochester.
  4. We all have to complain about something. It's a release mechanism. Otherwise we'd go home and kick the dog every night. :P
  5. Did they allow you to drink a beer between the announcements or were you parched? :mmm: Oh, for some of you young guys out there... for the record, the best pit ensemble has been an award since the mid to late eighties. You may win high drums without winning best pit ensemble. It's happened quite a few times - legitimately so.
  6. Well the one positive thing I can say about that is you guys will be in the middle of the DCA Activity. You can walk to I & E and even partake in the sidewalk beverage service without having to worry about driving back to your hotel.
  7. Clarion... Didn't Skyliners stay there last year with Hawthorne and Kilties?
  8. I don't think it matters. I hear stuff like that all the time. It's the elite top ten mentality. Every man for himself. I remember last year Sun had a real tough time getting into shows. I hope Sun and Sky field very succesful corps' this year.
  9. I don't agree with that; it's anti American. Do we say; Rhode Island you stay home, New York and California are much larger and have the collective experience to steer this country. Don't worry; we'll consider your interests, and will make sure you're taken care of. No... It’s downright wrong. These larger corps have long been removed from the up-and-comers. They don't remember what the smaller corps deal with; even if some of their management came from a podunk corps. All corps that meet a certain criterion should be included in the management of DCA.
  10. The weekend may have gone well for the Renegades, but unfortunately it doesn't bode well for the rest of DCA, because the vote is now limited to 10 corps'. Instead of expanding the vote so more have a say in how the organization is run, they've reduced it to a select few; the larger corps'. They've gone the route of exclusion. I don't see where that benefits the activity as a whole. <**>
  11. I read it, and I warned you Lee. I could see by what you wrote you're taking it personal. It sounds like the Skyliners have got your heart already; that didn't take very long. I think you may now officially call yourself a Skyliner. I wish you guys and gals all the success in the world and hope you're able to bring Sky far above their former glory. I know that will be extremely difficult considering how high that bar has been set. oh... one other thing...if you can make this happen, I'd like you to head to Rhode Island and put the Matadors back into play.
  12. Watch yourself Lee. That Skyliner heart has sucked in many people in Sky's more than 60 years of existence. Don't get too caught up in it. It's just drum corps. I do love your passion for the activity though.
  13. Lee... No need to apologize. I appreciate your passion for the activity and fairness in play. As ugly as it may look sometimes it helps some of us "out of the loop" understand what's behind the politics of the activity. BTW... this is not new; ugly politics have seasoned the activity since it's inception. I guess the politically correctness of today's society has numbed us into not speaking against the establishment. Please don't be affraid to speak your mind; regardless of who may find it offensive. After all... true life isn't all rosey, and neither is drum corps. This is a forum for discussing these views. I prefer it happen here with the fans of the activity than in the courts, where some of this has the potential to wind up.
  14. Mr. Poulan, I Enjoyed hearing Sky's opener today. From the looks on some of the players faces I think they liked it too. When the drummers were listening to the horn ensemble they were doing that drummer thing with their hands so I'm pretty sure they liked it. At first I wasn't sure the music was going to be New York. After hearing the horn line play it, there's no question in my mind; IT's DEFFINATELY NEW YORK! I wished you guys had played the rest of the show. I guess I may have to check out your first camp in January to hear it. GOOD LUCK with the Skyliner's Harry! Keep going with that Brassy New York sound DCA needs to hear again. I wish all the guys and gals in the Skyliners best wishes for the coming season. It's obvious to me all you folks have heart.
  15. WOW! Finally some more news; just in time for your open house. How about the big big news Lee was talking about. If I remember right, he said you guys landed a top Guard staff. Inquiring minds want to know.
  16. What did you guys pick? Is it Ream's show? Will he be crapping in his pants? You guys doing a rehash of any of the old stuff? Have you decided yet? If not, I like Gangs of NY idea. I bought the soundtrack just to check it out. I don't know if I can wait anymore. I may have to take someone out to dinner to find out. Feed him 'till he spills it or take him out back and beat it out of him. Save the poor guy from the beating. TELL US WHAT IT'S GOING TO BE!
  17. It's officially next week. Spill it. you did mean this week next week and not next week next week right?
  18. Well this all sounds like GREAT news. I want to hear more. Come on Sean, spill your guts. Or anyone for that matter. Is there such a thing as a deep throat in drum corps? Anyone have more of the scoop? Jeff you seem to know everything. What are they playing?
  19. WOW!!! It sounds like you folks are pulling out all the stops. Is this a last ditch effort to get NY started back on the right track? How can you afford all those names?
  20. Why would you even have to go that far? Lee is on the Skyliner staff. Just send NY some black trench coats and dark glasses and ask them to do a couple of standstills out east in the name of the Renegades. Oh man! I could see the rule changes allready. ^0^
  21. Sky sat home rehearsing the day of the Clifton show. I remembered asking about that on DCP. I got a few PMs from folks about what happened. Long story short, Sky and Sun were not invited to Clifton. I was pretty disappointed at that.
  22. I believe that's one of the reasons DCA was created in the first place; the VFW/American Legion governed the activity. DCA was created so corps' would have a voice in the direction of the activity. But what do I know...I only lived through the whole event.
  23. Sorry Sayre... My mistake. Having been around the activity for over 30 years has given me many inside contacts. The information I have of the various corps' shows came from those contacts. Unfortunately the people I know from NY don't have any information, or... they aint sayin. Guess I'll hold out for NY's open house.
  24. Come on man... throw us a bone. Are you guys doing a show that was proposed in this thread? Is NY the only corps that hasn't declared what their show is yet?
