  1. I think the weather played a big part in the subdued crowd. Right after Bucs finished performing half the stands cleared out. Probably the only fans left in the stands were 50/50 ticket holders, drum corps members and staff. Some might argue that there is nothing but the scores left after the last performance, and those you can get online or from someone staying 'til the end, so why bother staying. It's not like the old days when you waited to hear your favorite corps play itself off the field. Then you might follow the corps to the parking lot to hear it play some more. Times are changing gang. Makes one wonder where we may be headed.
  2. I hate to play devils advocate but unfortunately I think you’ll be missing one important component for the membership, and that’s camaraderie. Could the merged groups wind up like merged tribes on the reality show survivor? The tendency is to stick with and support your own tribe. I think you’ll need to address that aspect of team building in order to provide a positive rewarding experience for your members. Sounds like a fun project though. Good luck with it.
  3. If we're considering moving championships away from the fan base, why not consider the Democratic Republic of the Congo. We could bring drum corps to the continent of Africa with hopes of getting a couple of new corps started up. No corps would be at an advantage, because you all will be traveling. We could even force each corps to do at least one sanctioned show on the African continent in order to perform at the championships. Sorry… for selfish reasons I’d hate to see championships move out of the north east. Even Rochester is a stretch for me at 6 hours drive.
  4. Someone fill me in. DCA is trying to become Disney? The day we stop serving beer will be the first day of my retirement from drum corps spectating. is that a word?
  5. Can someone overdose on steak? I have no idea how much I ate. The servers just kept putting it in front of me, and I hate to see it go to waste. I saw a few Sunrisers chowing down as well. You boys can sure pack it away. It looked like one of you was eating it directly from the servers tray. I must say it was a great time. Even my wife enjoyed it. I was glad to see a packed house. Congratulations Skyliners! You put on one hell of a shindig. I can't wait for the next one.
  6. Chinese Auction? is that like a Tricky Tray or Pick-A-Prize? If so, do any of the auction items include 4 monster truck tires? Grandma needs new wheels for her ride. Doreen, My wife would've refused to go with me if I were to eat like a Viking again. She believes such behavior should remain in my distant past. (psss... just between you and I, I use my fingers to eat the buffalo wings at Hooters) WELL SAID Sayre! I will add BEER! oh, and A1 steak sauce. :-)
  7. Hmmmm... well I just had to look that one up. Free online dictionary: BEEF STEAK - A slice of beef, such as one taken from the loin or the hindquarters, suitable for broiling or frying. Wikipedia: BEEF STEAK - A steak cut from beef cattle. (makes sense to me, it's not a lamb or ham steak) of more interest to note: A celebratory dinner, commonly held in New York between about 1870 and 1940, stag until the 1920s, involving the consumption of enormous quantities of broiled steak and beer. Participants were permitted to eat only with their fingers; other dishes served as appetizers at beefsteaks included hamburgers, lamb chops, kidneys and occasionally baked potatoes. (seems to fit to me) BRING IT ON! A1 steak sauce all around. I'm eating with utensils though.
  8. I just bought my two tickets. The wife and I are looking forward to some good food and great company in the Skyliners.
  9. Apparently God needed a dancing contra player in his ensemble. R.I.P. my friend Ray
  10. I don't think demand is considered on the sheets anymore. I think the tank can work in a marcel marceau show, but how would you mask the sound of fire extinguishers?
  11. Twenty Five years already? My how time flies. Please bring back the tank and more fire extinguishers. While we're at it... make the snare line play matched grip. Yea... I'm feeling nostalgic tonight. Congratulations Empire on making it this far. Best wishes for the next twenty five.
  12. I think that time is long gone. No more looking someone in the face and making a deal with a handshake. Besides... that handshake thing only worked when you had muscle behind it. There was no threat of legal action back then, just a beat down. AAAAHHH... old time drum corps... :P Just a thought here... if you have any money left in your coffers you could sue Hawthorne for damages. Now thats drum corps helping drum corps. ^0^ Perhaps we could just have a good old fashioned rumble at the field. I haven't seen one of those since Sky tangled with the Security officers at the Championships in Hershey. or we can just let bygones be bygones.
  13. Well if you required staff to sign a binding contract I'm sure they'd be less likely to bail. I'm sure most of the corps in the top echelon require that.
  14. Lee was born? I thought he always existed. ^0^ HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEE!!
  15. I'll miss that corps this year. Somehow the list doesn't look complete.
  16. Now that is some good news. Seeing the traditional Skyliner uniform on the field may evoke some sad emotion from me though, because it's like seeing a ghost of an old friend on the field. I'm really hoping they will make it back next year. GO GARBARINA!
  17. I spoke to some of the legion folks running the show; it wasn't advertised. A lot of the tickets were comped as well. He said they gave tickets to senior citizens center and childrens home among others. As for the review... I swear cabs would have been much closer to bucs in scranton had they not blown the opener. Hawthorne blasted out of the bullpen like a one-ton bullet out of a gun barrel. They were so hyped up that there were at least three times where they had major phasing issues; one of them was a borderline tear where the backfield drum major was conducting different from the front side drum major. However... they calmed down after the opener and regained control. I expect the scores to be much closer in Rochester.
  18. Received my shirt Friday. Was sporting it around this weekend. Yea... I'm styling! The personally signed note from the director included in the package was a nice touch. Thank you Skyliners! I hope to see you guys and gals back on the field very soon.
  19. This show didn't have a full panel? If thats the case then this is another set of scores we can throw away. They are totally meaning less to me. Just spare me and turn them all into clap shows. Leave the judges home and we can save all the show sponsors money. :ramd:
  20. Now that sounds like a real good idea. Assuming costs are a deterrent to show sponsors, and if DCA has an interest in increasing the number of shows, perhaps the governing body can create some ways to reduce those costs. Because quite frankly, I don't think the scores have much merit without a full panel, and to the struggling corps', could quite possibly cause more harm than good.
  21. It has the potential to increase the number of shows, but at what expense? I'm sure any commentary a corps receives is beneficial, but unfortunately the scores and placements have the potential to be skewed in a major way as I suspect has happened last night. It'll be interesting to see the scores and placements of last nights units with a full panel of judges. I hope last nights experience does not take away the juice from some of the competitors. I can understand how disheartening it could feel. Good luck all. I can't wait to see y'all again.
  22. Ordered my shirt today. I hope it helps you folks put the field corps back together.
