  1. Anyone out there incredible at tuning their set toms. i have a ten high tom and 16 floor tom. Do I tune them to sound or to key. What should the key be and what notes or is this whole post stupid because it should only be to the actual sound produced?
  2. Stop right there. It can't be. There are HOLES in ANY corps. Didn't we get a 150 member rule voted in to retatin all those poor kids who were being cut and sent home. Where are they at? Tubas aren't needed anyway with the horn doubling synth. Just turn it to 11, 11 is more than ten.....
  3. Point well understood, but I have never seen the top DCA corps, just far lower placing units,
  4. May have to check that avenue out. I haven't been too impressed with the DCA corps I have seen but I am sure there is better out there. No I won't say which corps I have seen out of respect for their attempt at making memories. They just weren't very good.
  5. You are right again. There is a lot of woodwind bashing because a lot of people are very adamant that their opinion is the only correct opinion. Doesn't mean that because I agree with you that they are wrong. We all have opinions and they, (to us), are all correct. If woodwinds get voted into drum corps, then the eye of the beholder will change and hopefully you will have enough eyes to keep it going. I stopped going after last years horn doubling synth experiment gave me a bad taste. I just don't enjoy the shows anymore like I used to. I don't protest the shows or stand at the gate and boo, I just don't go anymore. P.S. I miss it, in my eyes.
  6. Not a Cavie hater, loved 007 and Machine, but in a neutral opinion, I say they look and sound the same every year. Sometimes they look and sound better but they always seem to have the same style and sound.
  7. And I would like to pay 85% of the actual ticket price to see that 85% of a show.
  8. Yep. I have no problem with the brass instrumentation. I do have a problem with cheesy clarinets et al, amplification of ANY instrument, voices and like you yourself said. True drum corps hasn't existed since 1939. Right?
  9. Its all in the eye and the ear of the beholder. Drum Corps to me started when DCI became DCI. To me bugle refers to brass instruments and percussion is percussion is still percussion. BUT, an oboe is not now nor ever will it be made out of brass. Like I said, let them go and have their cake. I will still be around and might even go see a non G7 show, even though I do not really like the shows of today with all the synth cover ups for the horns, the singing, YOWZA narration and OVER amplification of the pit. Can't any of the guys running the board really hear how overbearing they get? I would have no problem watching them implode with their new band corps. If they end up like Star in Blast, then good for them, but I won't be checking it out anytime soon. That should be ok? If DCI dies as a result, (stinks I know), then that is life. They are slowly dying every year already. Wonder why attendance figures aren't released? My final point is my main point all along. Let them go, goodbye.......
  10. I don't know I am not a drill writer. Its not my job, but I could tell you how to start slowly on learning to run a crane.
  11. The only problem I see with this analogy, is that the Blue Devils will change from drum corps to band with wind instruments. So if the Yankees left baseball and started playing softball, would their fans stay loyal, or find a baseball team to follow. This change allows woodwinds which then turns the G7 into bandcorps. A whole different game in my opinion.
  12. That is why I see no problem with this G7. I lost all respect for those corps, but I want them to leave and become band. Drum corps will survive and maybe even thrive with a complete changing of the guard. How many drum corps purists are going to go see a band show just because it is now the Blue Devils band? I really don't know the answer, maybe more, maybe less, but they will not be the same and drum corps can start working itself back to drum and bugle corps without all the complete game changing proposals Hoppy has been throwing at the board. This could be a win/win, a lose/lose or any combo therein. But really, G7 take your game and go, see ya. Wait no I won't, I personally don't enjoy band shows so I won't be there to see ya.......
  13. All this love makes me wonder why they discontinued the relationship. Makes me miss my wife, if I could only remember what color her hair was or if we were even married, I might find her again.
  14. I hope your last statement is correct. It would be a real boring season if everyone just maintains their position and point spread.
  15. Monetary penalties can be understood as far as a corps going bankrupt, but if the scores aren't penalized then everyone is being disserviced. The problems of undone shows are always funded with a plethora of excuses, most not worthy of reading. " Our show is soooo hard " = then WATER IT DOWN, but come prepared or don't come at all, you have all summer to strengthen it. " Our kids come from far away and can't start everydays early enough " = yet we had enough time to learn our unjudged intro, parade music and encore music. Excuses are just that, excuses..... I don't remember all the other corps that had a closer done before JULY making excuses. You have a job to do for the money you make. DO IT......before you take the field in competiton.
  16. Thats what is wrong with judging and scores. Every show should be independent of each other. Why does each show need to "set up" the finals. Each shows scores should reflect how the corps did THAT night, but they don't. The judges just KNOW the corps HAD to get better EVERY day right? So there is the case of slotting. Just give the score needed to maintain the spot..... I don't have an opinion on who should be top 12 this year, but I do agree that the gap as it stands may be too hard to surpass.
  17. Maybe corps need to start the season with a little easier show and BUILD. No complete show, no complete paycheck. I told the boss the other day that the job I was working on was really difficult and that I wouldn't be able to do it for 8 hours a day until 4 weeks after I started it and then asked for full pay immediatly........ya, it didn't fly with him either.
  18. Thank you. I couldn't find any more than the one reference. He really has the chops and technical ability to have been a really good marching member.
  19. In one article I read about Danny from Tool it states he marched drum corps, but it is not found anywhere else. Anybody know the scoop. He is from Kansas and grew up in the 80s. Just curious. Saw him Friday in Mn. and could not believe his talent.
  20. I would say the biggest factor in the decline in attendance, ( if there is one, we haven't officially been told ), is the decline in the number of corps and their marching members parents and family and friends. Less corps = less kids exposed= less family attendance of shows= less corps ==== But, which came first? Decline in corps or decline in fans? Simple?
  21. That is a nice scew on the reading of the poll numbers. You like to read it your way. Here is my way of reading it. 172 people want it LESS ( doesn't imply they enjoy it at all ) or NEVER ( obviously HATE it ), 26 want it more ( how many corps directors are their? ) and 19 ( all judges ) could care less. Not quite the 50/50 vision you have. So the totals should read 172 for it, to 45 against it.
  22. You are still completely out of context with the number. Second, attendance figures are not being released, WHY? If everything is going up then you would brag about all the new attendance right? I don't now know or will ever know if people are actually boycotting. I think IMO that they aren't boycotting, they are just done. Look up at the poll results of people that care enough about drum corps to chat on these threads and see how many say synths are a benefit versus a liability to the sound produced. I didn't make those numbers up, they are at the top of the page and the whole reason for the 14 pages of dialogue. Ignore it all you want. Personally I am hoping the G7 do go their seperate ways and what is left goes back to drum corps without all the gadgets. Another point to a different reply is when was it really drum corps? That is completely subjective. It is gonna be real only when the person feels it is relevant to the way they learned it. Doesn't make any answer right or wrong. I just get tired of the children who cry foul when former donors ( read: lots of cash to several corps ) decide to stop donating to something that does not relate to them. We are called greedy and selfish, yet those same children don't want to be called greedy when they keep asking for more and more toys. When will enough be enough? Oh right, when it is finally NOT DISCERNABLE from BAND.
