  1. Or the Braintree Armory with the Braintree D&BC and Commonwealth Armory with the Crusaders. At least the CA was big with a high ceiling, but still loud. Also, all the fans were aloud to stand along the wall each Friday night to watch the instructors, especially Ed Denon with his booming voice, chew some butt! The more fans, the better the acoustics. I imagine many an armory was used by corps. The Braintree Warriors also used the blimp hangar at the now closed Naval Air Station in Weymouth, MA, the home town (city now)of the Sancians.
  2. Yeah, the word "legal", but I'd have to chase down Tony DiCarlo.
  3. Since stepping away from competitive masters track for awhile, sign me up! The mind and body is ready.
  4. The old tinnitus which has been mentioned before in another thread. To see many DM's and others on and off the field not using ear plugs is stupid!
  5. If anyone would have the American Flag I figured it would be 27. Yes in 76, no in 77 with the partial FN scan.
  6. Several of the top corps used to throw their weight around. A questionable penalty seems odd since many corps felt Tony S. always seemed to love the mid-West corps and he had a history of shady input about who placed where. In 65, since the judging stopped after the last mm crossed the "finish line", our staff began having the two soprano soloists on "I Wish You Love" march backwards so they'd get to the FL sooner.
  7. this bit of Cavies history? You didn't march with them at this time, but maybe you have heard a Cavies version of the below story. Two friends who I marched with in Boston attended the 70 VFW in Miami. I was still with the AF in Deutschland. This is a story by one who was part of the discussion after prelims. "The prelims were held at Flamigo Park, a high school stadium. Boston went on and did a great job, but XXXXXX XXXXXXXX screamed at them afterwards and told them they sucked, and they should be ashamed of themselves. XXXXX confronted XXXXXX, and told him who the hell did he think he was to talk to the corps in that manner. XXXXX XXXX was furious at XXXXXX. The entire corps left to go back to the hotel. I stayed to watch the rest of the prelims. Chicago went on and for some unknown reason the PA system was left on and their performance was awful. They were getting feed backs and cross fires. The Cavs management was screaming after their score was announced, and they told Don Pescone, soon to be the dir. of DCI, that they wanted to go on again since they were at a disadvantage. They called for a meeting of all the corps and it was held in this little cement block room and the temps were in the 90's. Nobody was there from Boston, so I went to the meeting in my bathing suit, and MDC Life Guard Hat. (NOTE: Over the years this person has told this story and in previous versions he mentioned how he was quite vocal about the treatment the Cavies have received over the years.) They finally agreed that the Cavs would go on again, but they did not get to pick the score they wanted. It turned out that Chicago recived an 87 and finished 11th in the prelims. You should have seen their staff weeping. If I am not mistaken, if they had taken the other score they may have not made the finals. It was really strange to see "the green machine" on the starting line at 7:20PM in the daylight at the Orange Bowl. We were sitting with SAC's Alumni and you should of heard the "s---" that was being said. Chicago finished 3rd. Troopers won, and Boston was second. It was a dam shame, because the corps did a fantastic job, they certainly peaked that evening. After Boston's performance, the guys from SAC said the corps would take it that night."
  8. The majority of mm from 40+ years ago were from the the same neighborhoods within cities, had no formal musical training, and hung around together when not practicing. When many band kids, who read music, began marching in D&BC, the rough edges of a corps personality began to soften up.
  9. What flavor was your cone since I'm guessing you were the kid? As for your reply, I see nothing wrong with the topic. We discuss other topics from decades ago and see no problem with this one. I imagine other alumni of the era have spoken to those marching in their old corps today about the 50's -70's.
  10. After the 64 Pittsfield (MA)Boys Club Standstill won by the Boston Crusaders, we were in the buses waiting to leave. A member of Blessed Sac, the 63 AM Legion Champion, came up to a window and began talking with one of our members. Next thing you know their going at it, the bus begins emptying, and a major brawl takes place. I've been told by those present that BAC and the Cavies had an incident during the 67 AM Legion parade in Boston.
  11. Can't recall if in fact the B&A was involved with the death the OP is interested in.
  12. Sit back and see if you can find your answer in this current thread. Have heard/read a bow and arrow was the weapon of choice.(?) http://www.drumcorpsplanet.com/forums/index.php/topic/155358-the-hawthorne-muchachos-what-really-happened/
  13. Interesting. Well, now that was a quick thread!
  14. And he and his family would have access to the Vaticans coffers!
  15. This is the Norwegian Royal Guard Regiment (equivalent to the British and Canadian Guards regiments). These guys give the USMC Band and Honor Guard and the Army's 1 BN 3d Infantry (The Old Guard) a run for their money. All of this is being performed on ICE! Wonder if that's why the percussion section wears white gloves. Those are US made Garand M-1 rifles (WWII), and they are heavy weapons (9 POUNDS EACH). It's also, known for its balance!! When that one fellow goes on his own - YOU'VE NEVER SEEN A RIFLE SPUN THAT FAST! http://sorisomail.com/email/16993/exibicao-de-banda-militar--um-espectaculo-imperdivel.html
  16. During the TV broadcast, I heard a soprano being played from the stands, but at the time, had no idea by whom and what corps was on the field. I also remember Crusader friends yelling up to our apartment window when leaving and finding their car antennas bent or snapped off!
  17. Any area that doesn't already have church run thrift stores is an area without a large enough customer base.

  19. There were several rows of people rimming the "field". First, those who were sitting on the floor. Then those in metal folding chairs followed by those standing. Finally, there were additional rows of people sitting on chairs that were stacked on top of other chairs. It was really weird saluting after the color presentation and having children and others sitting/standing withing 20 feet of you. If I recall, the corps had to go through an opening of people behind the SL. There's a photo of a newspaper clipping on the previous page that shows how low the ceiling was. The echo wasn't too bad, but the whole experience was one for the ages.
