  1. Although, the corps as a whole package is doing wonderfully, the hornline, from what I've seen is the real treat this year. So far, I'm been very impressed with the quality and sound this line has been producing. Can't wait to see them on Monday night in the competition venue....of course, I'm a bit biased too since my child is marching the colorguard.
  2. Same here. Returned after a 13 year hiatus and brought 4 new members with me.
  3. Actually, the open house was changed until Sunday, Dec. 3rd due to a conflict. All the information is on the corps website along with the announcement about the 2007 show. Reenie
  4. From what the corps website says, It does not look like an overall no posting rule, just no negative or corps business on meassge boards, but I do have to agree with Liz, couldn't this just have been asked of a senior member of the corps? although, he probably would've gotten a wise crack answer knowing most of the senior members in said corps. I would've gone their first or posted it as a general question rather than mentioning the 2 corps by name. Reenie
  5. <<The guy we are talking about is mentally challenged. He really wants to participate but is having trouble keeping up with even a rookie drumline, cannot retain instructions very well, and is very overweight to the point that I could not get a drum harness on him. This is an alumni corps so we're not so worried about ticks, etc, and we want to keep him involved as I'm sure it would be good for him. I will probably put him on a solo instrument, timbales or something similar, but does anyone have direct experience teaching someone with these kinds of challenges?>>> Jim, I've worked with adults with mental and physical challenges for 30+ years. The best I can tell you is this: 1. Make sure whoever is giving him instructions is looking directly at him and he is looking at the person. I know this may sound kinda silly, but sometimes it helps tremendously. 2. Things may need to be repeated several times. 3. If he can read, write things down for him. When I say write things down I pretty much mean, write down everything that you need him to retain. Request that he study it when he goes home.If he can't read, use picture cards (they work great). 4. If he has never played an instrument before, I would stick with something simple, like cymbals. It may be easier for him to remember a crash hear and there, rather than having to remember several different rhythms. I would play up the importance of the instrument to get him interested in it. I hope some of this info. helps and good luck!!! Just don't give up on him. He will proabably end up being one of your most dedicated/enthusiatic members. Reenie
  6. 1992 - 4th CT Hurricanes. This was my last season with the corps due to having my baby a week after finals. Definately a memorable year and the best placement in the 3 seasons I did with the corps ('90 - 10th, '91 - 5th). Irene
  7. I hate to tell you, but fife's have been in drum corps since the early 1800's and happens to run one of the oldest organization's existing today (founded in 1885). I guess you could say Fife and Drum corps' are the great grandfather's of drum corps world. Yes, Meriden is in CT and it's not that bad!!! I do happen to live there, just don't go downtown and it happens to have an excellant music program in one of its high schools. Reenie
  8. I wouldn't just limit your definition to include just the three sections. There are several types of drum corps around and some are not just brass, percussion & guard and no they are not bands, they are drum corps'. Now if your definition is just pertaining to Drum & Bugle corps, then it fits. Reenie
  9. Brandford, CT (since it's the only one offered in our state.). Irene
  10. No chance of me avoiding drum corps. I was born into it. That is I was born into Fife and drum corps. Both parents were drummers and instructors for many of these types of corps and a few of Mom's students went on to play with D&B Corps (Sunrisers, Bridgemen). Mom always took me to the D & B shows when they were in town and always knew that it was something I wanted to do. Finally got the chance in my 20's and played in the pit of a Senior (all-age now) D & B for 3 seasons. Best time of my life. Now I have passed the family tradition onto my kids and hope that someday they will have the opportunity to experience D&B. Irene
  11. It's listed on the cinema's site (regal cinemas) under Big Screen events. But I'll be danged if I can figure out how to purchase tickets. Tried to call the number and it's one of those voice automated things which are very frustrating to me.
  12. I like to see selections from teh group "Yes" 90125 (now I'm dating myself) specifically: Leave It Changes Hearts Don't believe anyone has ever done this. reenie
  13. Thanks for the info. Branford is not too far from me and yes I-95 is a nightmare. Think I will take the back roads. Irene
  14. I was wondering if you could tell me the location of the theatre it was in last year. I would be interested in seeing this. Thanks.
  15. I know this is the DCI forum, but I saw mention of some DCA corps. There was a very talented female snare who played with the Sunrisers for many years (late 70's to mid 80's) and had the chops to challenge any male. That would be Cathy Ferrari.
