  1. But closer to the free side than $5k / season. There aren't many competitive bands around me, but the school system implemented a policy where students couldn't be charged more than $50 for an activity. I guess that's more fair to students where money is really tight, but it killed the few competition bands that were around. So in the end, I'm not sure it was really as fair as intended.
  2. It’s the only thing that makes sense. Otherwise, you’re taking away 20 or so brass instruments and replacing those with woodwinds. Even amplified you would be cutting the sound of the corps. But if you add members you almost need to add 50 to make an additional bus most cost effective. Now the field is cluttered, err, more cluttered.
  3. Not really. Just less interesting for him. I‘m sure economics plays a factor because the recording wasn’t cheap. I didn’t go deeply into motivation so as to open the audiophile versus plain old speaker cable debates.
  4. I think OP has a bit more vested interest than most as he used recordings of corps (among other things certainly) to demo the cables and other gear that he sells. Amplification ruins the nuances that could have been recorded. So it’s obviously less interesting to him.
  5. I thought the designated hitter was universal. I don’t really follow baseball much, obviously. Maybe if they changed their uniforms....
  6. From what I've seen from the tax returns, dues do not cover all expenses, so adding members will only result in cost savings if they can bring new sources of donations or at least fill vacant seats on buses. Their food costs are the same. Uniforms are the same, well they need gloves with fingers cut out.
  7. Will adding woodwinds increase the size of the corps or cut away from brass numbers? If they’re doing this to make recruitment easier, that only makes sense if you’re recruiting fewer brass. If you’re adding members, you only want to fill the empty seats on the bus or add a full bus of members so that transportation costs are spread evenly and to the maximum extent. So, would that mean adding 55 woodwinds? Not enough room with all of the props on the field.
  8. With today’s class D amps and 800 watts in a 3-4 pound package, they get pretty close.
  9. I was watching a DCI video on YouTube at work a few weeks ago and someone asked if was watching marching band. So, I had ten seconds to explain and my short reply boiled down to it being all brass and they do nothing but drum corps 24x7 for about four months per year so they get really good and can do intricate shows that most bands can only dream of. I guess that was my elevator pitch for drum corps - all brass and they practice a lot. Is an amplified bass clarinet as loud as a contra?
  10. Reality check - if drum corps is so special, why are people paying $5k / summer to participate in it due to lack of sufficient ticket sales to support the activity? It’s not a viable product. It’s a hobby with a small number of people drawing a small paycheck in support of the hobby.
  11. He’s pretty screwed right now. So any confusion or doubt they can throw in would benefit the defense. They have more to gain than lose.
  12. Great pics! I hope they keep enough classic unis around for ceremony. It wouldn’t be the same with the pink and black mummy uniforms.
  13. 403 is an authentication error. No idea why because I don’t have any insight into their back end.
  14. Yet. Where else do you find large numbers of people playing brass or drums? Marching bands are the obvious recruitment pool.
  15. They’re probably looking for more opportunities to find contradictions or ammo to shoot down anything.
  16. All brass is the unique voice. I'm not even a fan of trombones, woodwinds is also my line. Not that it means anything.
  17. Does anyone know what the attendance figures are for “the Honda” I believe it’s called. People like bands, but I think we’ve gone too artsy for general appeal. I was in a Best Buy a few years ago and they were playing the Drumline battle scene at full volume in the home theater section. Everyone in the store went back to watch it. There is huge growth h potential if you play for more than the guys / gals with the clipboards. I guess they’re iPads now. You now what I mean.
  18. The key to college bands is that they’re there for entertainment whether it’s PSU, Ohio, Western Carolina, A&M, they just have a a unique style that hasn’t evolved much from their formula.
  19. That you used “alleged” is also an issue. It’s not good enough to be a fan. You must have been in a corps for X number of years to be a real drum corps person. It’s why drum corps won’t pick up many new fans - it’s mostly a closed group.
