  1. Does anyone know the song/group that he was awarded or nominated a grammy for?
  2. I have have played on/ marched with corps that used Yamaha, Pearl, Ludwig, Premier and taught at corps that used Yamaha, pearl, premier, dynasty. I know this thread is about premier but, !.*t!!! The Dynasty shells are NOT IT!! Too thin. The basses would change tone while I was tuning ( in a 15 min period ) if the drums were moved in or out of the sun ( and not on a super hot or humid day). We took off the heads and hardware off the Dynasty to recover with thin stretchy fabric and the shells were not round and they wobbled.. When I marched Premier we only had problems with the hardware on the bases ( on the top drum ) and losing the screws on the tenors that kept the hts bearing edges on. The real deal with drum sound is the shell. Specifically the type of wood being used, the the amount of plys/thickness and the way they are held/glued/steam pressed togather. Oh yes and ofcourse bearing edge. You guys should check this page outhttp://p205.ezboard.com/fdrumrapfrm1 http://www.drumshed.org/forum/
  3. anyone have a vid of Darryl Foote ( spirit 86, placed ahead of lief) doing his tenor solo? We worked together a few years back and singles/paradiddles are still kicking..
  4. well unless the sheets changed last summer ( my one year out of corps since 1993) then since this is a Competition and the sheets put ge where it is points wise, no.....
  5. you would not get enough fields in most places. Most corps have 3 fields for sectionals. I have seen some harsh situations a few times because 3 corps had to share one field for ensemble...
  6. Swiss drumming was around long before the " pilgrams" came here. Our rudimental drumming mostly came from them. America just happend to have immigrants from europe ( scotish/irish , french) and slaves from africa and latin america. That's where the ideas for all the other rudiments came from along with phrasing and rhythms.
  7. The person that " hipped " me to drum corps was Sgt. Vincent Caballero. He was a Marine recruiter that went around to all the schools. He had marched in the Marines d&bc for a few years and marched CMCC warriors back in the mid to late 70's. Seems like he did more talking to drummers and teaching exercises and cadences at all the schools he went to than recruiting (haha!!).
  8. Well besides the fact that some of the hornline and almost all of the snare lines from mike backs early years came from J.S.U.. When I marched Spirit we stayed there for a week in 96 and had all camps and alldays there in 97,98,99 not sure about 2000 though. It's not "new". Also when I marched most of the corps was from Fl ( old suncoast people/ people who would have been at suncoast). And Tenn., and south Georgia. There were usually an average of 3 to 10 people that were actually from Atlanta in 96 - 98.
  9. Sorry about that . I realize that but it was about the idea of doing the right thing soon or suffering the consequences of what the worst possible situation could be. Loosing staff and kids and starting over with completely new people feels like that ( completely diff. corps).
  10. Dito!... I have been with a corps that folded on tour.... THAT SUCKS !.. What must be done must be done and the sooner is always better than later. With a solid administration #1 and program designers( # 4 or 5 after all the other buisness/on the road stuff). I am sure you will have plenty of the right support from drum corps fans alums and your community.
  11. Well guess what?.. It is FACT!!!! I dealt it with all six of my marching years and all six years of my teaching years. . . Again read my post There is a big difference with the number of people in communities and the close connections to church/youth organizations specifically drum corps vs. the northeast . In Boston or anywhere in Mass. ( for that matter) In the state of N.Y. and Penn. If you wear a corps jacket you have WAY better chance of some one seeing it and going " I marched in--- my cousin----- my friend--- I used to cook/drive/ live down the street from/ play bingo at--- . .. than Florida. I have seen that from personal experience and so has EVERYONE that I marched with from Suncoast 93,94,95 and all the Florida kids that marched Spirit from 95- 98. That should be obvious by looking at how many corps were actually up north and how many corps still survive up there and how they survive vs. Florida ones. I'm not saying Florida is horrible just different situation than the North-east. Funny enough Drum corps are full of Florida and texas people. . . Which state supports the arts more from a scholastic / local /state government perspective?
  12. For all you people that are talking about 3 to 6 corps being in the same town ( north east people and cali). remember this is florida. I marched in Suncoast ( the " second edition") Spirit, taught Thunder and Kiwanis and Teal. Florida does not have much drum corps history in the past except for Suncoast, Wave, devil dogs ( not sure who was before that; more from a eighties and before history) We did fund raising in St. pete/ clearwater side of Tampa and people were like " drum what " Never heard of it. Even they were living in that area when Suncoast was " Suncoast " ( As most of the old vets say) but most have forgotten. Bingo does not work in Fla. You have no idea how hard it is to get sponsor ship when people don't know what drum corps or more importantly what drum corps does ( builds character, leadership, relationships; way beyond the music and dance). I remember in 94 trying to get sponsor ship from my mom's friends ( black buisness owners, lawyers, doctors , ex Hillsborough county sheriff department heads; people who were from " my" african american community). You guys in the Northeast have corps history from 40 - 60 years ago, tight/close communities church and youth organizations. Cali people the same and, you have legal gambling/bingo. All florida has is Kids, and sun when it's not raining That's it. And some rehearsal spots that were not affiliated with Suncoast and Magic of old for reasons everyone probably knows and I am not going to bring up. The only way a " Florida " corps will work is with a board ( a real board ) of business people #1 that know how to make money, invest, market, sell and when to lay low for a year or two and keep other projects going ( real legit stuff not doing nfl games and doing the WRONG things with the money or, pyramid schemes). Look at Spirit ; the college connection works. Although most people don't realize that most of the spirit drumline and horn members of the early and mid eighties were from J.S.U. And another thing ; it's great to want to advance and " really" get to the top 6 level but, people ( corps ) need to figure out or remember what people did in the past to first off find the right staff to meet their productive and financial needs and keep them for 6 or 7 year. That way you will have the same kids ( ah ha!!! that's how we used to have 5 year vets...) and pull from the same school programs and so forth. You can't just do " what's right" for Magic next year, you have to look 5 to 10 years ahead from a business/ youth organization and say this makes more since for the long run. ( " If we go inactive we will not make money") That's why you need real buisness men and women on the board that write grants ( that actually have a license for it) and that have business/ local government connections no matter how big or small. With todays gas prices and other funding issues you really have to serve the community ( really truthfully ) and not just one or two band programs. How come no one really looks back and sees the community involvement ( but actually ) the drum corps involvement in the community and bases their support or lack there of off of that? ?....? .
