  1. I remember in 1992 when I was 11 years old, I saw a commercial for the U.S. Navy and it showed a bunch of sailors lined up in ranks sort of like the drum corps retreat. Three years later I was introduced to drum corps and they showed retreat in the finals video. It reminded me of what I had seen three years earlier in that Navy commercial and I couldn't help but think to myself, they look exactly like the military. I mean I was uneducated about drum corps back then and couldn't help but associate drum corps with the military. My point being, whenever I show people drum corps, most of them ask one of two questions. "Is this a marching band?", or "Is this some sort of military unit?" I think it would be excellent to keep drum corps associated with the traditions of the military. I also think it is okay for drum corps to have their own retreat styles. I mean, after working hard all summer I guess it is okay to relax a little. But when it gets to the point where you are disrespecting another drum corps, I don't think it is cool to do that because not only are you showing how immature you are, but judging by the posts in the last thread about this topic, you also lose the respect that a lot of people had for you. Drum majors should share a lot of responsibility in this because I mean they are in charge. I like to look at them as a Company Commander (as they call it in the military). And staff members young and old (especially older) should be mentoring the younger staff members because usually they have been around that specific corps much longer and know how things should be. My .02 cents.. Here's to 2009!!
  2. My thoughts exactly. I mean, the brass staff has been changed quite a few times, but the drum staff is like sugar to frosted flakes. I definitely will miss both those guys. I don't know too much about drums or the pit, but that was my favorite section of the corps. Just something about those rimshots....... Cadets will be fine though. I have faith in them.
  3. Hell hasn't frozen over yet. As for the announcement, I am saddened by this, but I can understand both their resignations as they have both been with Cadets for a LOOOOOOOOONG time. I am sure The Cadets will be fine.
  4. Wow, that sucks. I thought there were some VERY entertaining shows from 2000-2007. Sucks that it takes Phantom to win for people to actually buy a DVD, yet people keep talking about how DCI is losing money.
  5. I agree, with both. If it were in Annapolis, it would be closer to where I am stationed.
  6. My hope is The Cadets come out with a bomb-a** show that blows people away. If they choose to use narration, so be it. I would much rather they not do that, but either way, I'll still want to see them. I am looking forward to seeing what they bring to the field next year and I am confident that they will learn from this year and come out next year on fire.
  7. Oh please. Cadets have usually done a "hissing" noise marching to the gate.
  8. I'd love for him to explain to me why I would be trolling for responses to bash my own corps. We all know that wasn't my intention.
  9. Also, after the scores were announced in finals in 2000, we and Cavies shook hands and congratulated each other then. I don't doubt they are a classy corps. Everything was cool then and I am sure it is now. It's all friendly competition after it's all said and done.
  10. I don't think there is anything wrong with rehashes. I just don't really like seeing something that was out there before, even though they were great. I'm just saying, I like shows more when they've never been played before. Like us in 2000. We were supposed to play Appalachain Spring, but after going to a meeting (don't really want to go into the details), he decided to put on that Disney show, and we know the results of that. But to each his own, you know?
  11. I was just quoting your post. I wasn't saying YOU couldn't stand when Cadets did it. I was making a point since I apparently have to point that out.
  12. Actually, they did that in 98, 99, and 2000. I think in 01 too, but I was on deployment so I didn't see it. So what was the point of bringing this up?
  13. How exactly was that disrespectful? Those were excerpts from the show, but when they got ready to play America The Beautiful, they came to attention.
  14. I couldn't help but laugh my ### off at this. And I do agree (sans the "holy XXXX).
  15. Personally, I think that whatever each drum corps does during retreat is their thing. I don't think bashing them just because of the way they handle retreat is fair at all. Every drum corps has a different way of doing things, and bashing one just because they do something that YOU don't agree with is terrible. And G, when was this time when Cadets were disrespectful to the idea of retreat and what exactly did they do?
  16. And that's why The Cadets are The Cadets. Well said Mike.
  17. I put yes primarily because they were fourth going into quarters, got third in quarters, second in semis and took finals. First corps to ever do that. So in my opinion, I think that is truly epic. Congrats again Phantom.
  18. It's just one design element in the show. Some corps know how to use it, some don't. But at the end of the day, it's just one design element and it really does not add nor take much away from the show (other than the fact that most people can't stand it....well can't stand when CADETS do it).
  19. And THAT'S something of which to be proud no matter what the placement.
  20. This... But also, I can't speak for other corps, but knowing Gino Cipriani with Cadets, he would have ripped us a new one if we had played the way the OP is describing. I don't know how it sounded last night because I wasn't there. I would hope it doesn't sound THAT bad.
