  4. Can we have an update from the Timmy's 18th birthday weekend? Thanks! Happy Birthday behave! Dave
  5. What a shock. Rick was an amazing man. A guy who you could talk to about anything. An amazing dad, a drum corps great. This man had a heart of gold. He would do anything for a fellow friend of Corps. He worked with any organization small or large, any level of achievement. He recently even offered to make some drums for the kids in South Africa. As I sit here in Cape Town, SA with a broken heart, I send my warmest thoughts and love to Sara, Josh, and Cheryl. And, to those Crusaders who have been close to Rick, keep the ethic - and through the tough times, remember to keep the smile Rick always had on his face in your minds. I will miss your two hour phone calls, Rick. Dave

  7. Hey Joe, The Buccs have an amazing Organization with a outstanding team of members, leadership, staff, and volunteers. The Buccs have set a standard in drum corps that others strive to achieve. The members, administration, staff, and volunteers of that Corps commit and follow through on their commitments. This is why they are in FIRST PLACE. I would be crazy to try to guess which corps if any might come close to knocking them from their title. But, it will certainly have to be one hell of a Corps. The Buccs have committed to the South African Field Band Instrument donation program and have even passed the Crusaders in their member donations of equipment to the program. I will be heading to the Buccs rehearsal this weekend to meet with Tom Moore as he shares his excitement with me on what drum corps in the United States can do for the building and support of the South African people. (mainly children at risk) Would you give me a hand with this project, Joe? I know you know some percussion people in Canada. Maybe you could be the link here on that. Good luck to all drum corps this season! I hope you all win! Dave ----------------------------------- Public Relations Rochester Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps

  9. I had the privilege of marching Patriots with Lynne, Jeff, Kevin, and Jen in the early 90's. I've been at the Hoyt household quite a bit in my teen years and have to say that the Hoyts are an amazing family. Kay and Gary welcomed everyone into their home with style. When I heard the news from Tom Peashey, I flashed back to the days at the Hoyt house. The days of learning about drum corps and how people come together as a drum corps family. The days of learning from Gary the difference of my left and right foot! And for some reason, I cannot get off my mind the morning at the Hoyts when Gary decided to give us all a wake-up call by blasting his new "Fiddler on the Roof" CD in the living room! From what I can recall....Lynne was not impressed. As we all grew up, we drifted apart for a while (10 years or so!)...But then, who do I see on an Empire Statesmen bus years later.... Lynne!! Many of us on the Crusaders administrative and teaching staff have marched with the Hoyts (both generations) and we all send out our thoughts to the Hoyts. Those of us who marched with them through the years will be talking this weekend at our upcoming open house to see what we can do to help her family continue to get 10,000 pencils for those children! David

  11. Crusaders to honor Gustav Holst Be part of the 2009 Rochester Crusaders! Contact Recruiting Director, Brian Wilt at Brianwilt@rochestercrusaders.org or call the Crusader Hotline 585.251.7117 for further information. Rochester, NY (November 22, 2008) - The Rochester Crusaders will honor the great British composer Gustav Holst with their 2009 production “Land and Space – the music of Gustav Holst.” “After the success of our past two seasons with Russian orchestral music, we wanted to maintain our identity, but with a twist,” program coordinator Gene O’Brien said. “Holst gives us the opportunity to utilize 20th century orchestral music, but with material that is audience friendly. “This is music that allows us to meet both elements of our mission – to present the highest quality music and maintain our traditional strong connection with the audience,” he stated. “Land and Space” will feature music from “The Planets,” “Moorside Suite” and possibly the “St. Paul Suite.” “We plan to set the table with an inductory statement on ‘Mars’ from ‘The Planets.’ Our arranger, Jim Prime, feels this is the perfect vehicle to establish the tone of what is to follow,” O’Brien said. This will be followed by the “Moorside March,” a strong piece that has been seldom done in drum corps but is a concert band evergreen. O’Brien said that “Moorside” will allow the Crusaders to educate while maintaining audience involvement. “We love the idea of doing a march. Drum corps has lost this important part of its tradition., in that corps seldom if ever do marches any more. This march is contemporary, but has all the elements necessary to get our audience really going.” Two options for the third segment of the show – “Venus” from “The Planets” and “Fantasia on the Dargason” from the “St. Paul Suite” – are being considered. “Each offers another side of the Crusaders and Jimmer wants to see how things settle in elsewhere before making this decision. Either one would be great,” O’Brien stated. The show will close with “Jupiter” from “The Planets.” “This beautiful piece has the air of inevitability about it,” O’Brien said. “We feel it is a perfect closer for us.” “The Planets” is one of the most influential orchestral pieces of all time. “One can’t imagine what soundtracks for space and science fiction films would sound like without the influence of this piece. Listen to any John Williams score and you get the connection,” O’Brien stated. Holst (1874-1934) composed “The Planets” in 1914-16. “Mars, the Bringer of War” predated World War I by two years, but its ostinato 5/4 approach was an eerie precursor of upcoming events. The tension created by the movement from distant, soft backgrounds to a triple forte paints a terrifying picture of a war machine destroying all in its path. In 1927 Holst was commissioned to write a competition piece for the National Brass Band Festival Committee. The result was “Moorside Suite.” Its march includes material from Holst’s “Land of Hope and Glory.” “Moorside” was played by 15 brass bands in the 1928 competition. “Fantasia on the Dargason” is the last movement of the “St. Paul Suite,” this piece was written for the orchestra at the St. Paul’s School for Girls in Hammersmith, England. It is a combination of folk tunes, including the time-honored “Greensleeves.” Holst later included “Dargason” in his “Suite in F” for military band. “Jupiter” is subtitled “Bringer of Jollity” and is meant to be “buoyant, hopeful and joyous.” “We figure this will be the perfect closer to a show that should be educational and entertaining,” O’Brien said. www.rochestercrusaders.org ------------------------------ Public Relations Rochester Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps The Rochester Crusaders all age Drum and Bugle Corps is a non-profit musical, visual and educational organization, that provides quality instruction that focuses on a musical and visual program that is both artistically and technically challenging. 19. From someone who has lost a sibling due to the recent war, I cannot find the words to describe the feelings that one goes through when a bugler plays Taps for his little brother. What a good thing you are doing for families of the fallen. I haven't enough courage to pick up my trumpet to play Taps. I will one day. Thanks Tom for your work... Dave
