  1. Not that anyone on DCP is a programming genius but, considering some of the recent programming decisions, it might be time for corps management to consider additional 'advice' when it comes to programming choices. If you are going to do something abstract (i.e.. This New World), it better BE 'new'. Not just new for a corps, new as in overall concept and design that sets a standard. I have probably burned my PR bridges with some of my comments here. I just hope that I am proven wrong next year. However, I am on quite a streak (having a critical eye for the 2014-18 design concepts). I've got some suggestions, two of which were posted on this thread and one that I will keep to myself because, what's the point?
  2. From another thread: Posted Monday at 12:20 PM Because I'm a data geek, I decided to map Phantom Regiment vs. Mandarins head-to-head scores this season and here's what I came up with: 7/15 St. Louis PR +0.938 7/21 San Antonio PR +1.55 7/26 Birmingham PR +0.2 7/28 Atlanta PR +0.1 Based on this trend, I think the Regiment bus mirrors need a new warning label: Mandarins in mirror are closer than they appear!
  3. Sounds easy enough. Sadly at this rate, it would probably be the other way around!
  4. I'm not sure how well "The Ring" would translate into todays chop and bop activity? But it would be interesting. That said, I think they could do a complete show (with minimal chop and bop) of Pictures at An Exhibition. It practically screams for story telling and I'd be happy to consult on it!
  5. I'm really not sure that the staging is affecting the music. The music is affecting the music. They could have staging from 'on high' but the music just doesn't support it. They are doing the best with what they have been given, but as someone indicated, 3 ballads is a bit too much. That wouldn't even fly in the 60's! It's time to get out of the comfort zone, which some have indicated this show is a 'step' in that direction. However, taking a step while everyone else is running still leaves you in the dust.
  6. I have heard comments such as, 'this is the best (fill in the blank) since 2008' more times than I care to count (including last season). Unfortunately, the vast majority of those prognostications have, unfortunately, fallen flat for whatever reason. It is obvious that there are some that 'want' that to be true (don't we all), perhaps to the point of suspending reality.
  7. You are all wrong! The last/newest addition is so obvious. Wilson makes an appearance.
  8. DT is a west coast honk, and everybody knows it! (using my trump voice there)
  9. Why? After so many years of saying (hoping) the same thing, why would 2019 be any different? The design is behind the times and not in any way ground breaking.
  10. Perhaps it's time for the corps to take itself less seriously:
  11. Not that I want to pick at this bone but, in the right hands, it could be an otherworldly show. Perhaps that is the reason it had never been considered. Obviously, a straight forward adaptation of it would be a massive failure however, with the creative license corps have nowadays, you could do almost anything. Unfortunately, the Regiment (at least in appearance) does not have the right hands for this show. While I loved Dr. Dan, since his responsibilities were other than programming, he may have been toeing the corps line with his feelings towards not doing it. Just a thought. Certainly they need to do something drastic.
  12. The problem is this, design is subjective, yet, what is mostly considered in scoring. Not bagging here, but, is BD's design constantly better by design or by perception? Would, say, Blue Knights get the same credit for doing BD's 2018 show exactly the same way? That is the underlying question. We can assume that corps A's show has a superior design because that is the way it has been for years. While reality (in this case meaning, just the general audience) just sit there and don't 'get it'.
  13. Completely agree. Very underrated. But I think a modern approach to it could really get them back in the thick of things.
  14. I guess 'dark' is considered 'identity'. However, as some have pointed out, it isn't necessary. 03,04,05,07,09,10, not exactly 'dark' shows. That said, I'd like them to do a modern interpretation of Symphony Fantastique! But since they have NEVER listened to me, why start now? http://www.classical-music.com/article/love-story-behind-berliozs-symphonie-fantastique
  15. I have expressed my concern that their design has been lacking and this year is no exception. While it may be a step in the right direction, when you are already (IMO) five+ years behind the curve, a 'step' in the right direction still means you are behind the times. It's time for leaps and bounds to take the place of steps. I have a hard time believing that these supremely talented members are being 'written down' to. To me that is insulting. Thus one must conclude that it is simply the design staffs choices that are the reason for the current status. Someone indicated that perhaps it is too 'high brow, or to subtle'. Whatever the case, drastic changes need to happen.
  16. Well, I guess we need some then! Here goes. IMO, the show design is a few years behind the times (again). Even then it probably would still have been sitting outside the top 6. Now remember, I said 'designed' not performed. I could see Mandarins overtaking them by DCI based on design. A point and a 1/2 spread isn't very much. I could also see Stars staying ahead, again, based on design (though I don't necessarily care that much for it, the design is what will make the difference). Ok, was that enough 'blow back'?
  17. Rockets did not perform a concert # in 1970 at prelims.
