  1. OK, here's an old-timer's reaction to this, and I bet you will be surprised. I have no problem with the WW's competing at DCI I&E. There are a lot of very fine WW players marching in DCI. It's great way to showcase someone who may be just a 3rd trumpet, but 1st chair, all state clarinetest. As long as they do not use them in the show itself, what does it hurt. I have a good friend who marched Blue Devils pit in the early 80's and then joined the Army Band as a clarinetest. I just recently saw a YT video of a Cavie playing "American in Paris" on clarinet at DCI I&E. He wa awesome. Hey, if a marching member can juggle, let's have a competition.
  2. Bad idea, it takes forever to get a buzz when your drinking from a spray bottle. By the way, seriously again if I may, for those still in high school, wouldn't the whole alcohol thing be risky with those ZERO tolerance rules?
  3. Of course if you drink enough of it, you won't have a care about your valves. On a serious note, did you know that USMC Band, The President's Own, actually has a march that was written just for this situation. The woodwinds carry the melody while the brass play everything open valve, just like old time bugles. By the way, the topic starter states he is going to U of Maine? Did he not notice there are several U's in Florida? (tongue in cheek)
  4. Did you hear about the Blue Devils girl who was fired from her job at the M&M factory? She was throwing away all the "W's"!
  5. Two Reading Buccaneers were walking down the street. The first one walks into a bar. The second one ducks. A Bushwacker rookie was walking to practice one day. A streetwalker told him, "$5 for a good time." He wasn't sure what she meant. He got on a local bus and again, another lady of the evening said, "Hey, $5 for a good time." Again, confussion on the rookie's end. When he finally arrived at practice he asked the corps director what the two ladies were asking about. The director was not sure either so he told the rookie to ask a color guard member. He approached one and asked, "What's a good time?" She said, "$5, just like downtown."
  6. Billy had just finished his 1st show with the drum corps. Mom & Dad were so proud. They said, "Billy, you were fantastic, you were the only one in step the entire show!" What are the 2 kinds of people you will find in a drum and bugle corps? Musicians & Percussionists. Please LMK if there are any contras players reading these, in that case, I'll write slower. Hey, I'll be here all week, don't forget to try the roast beef.
  7. Thanks for making me spit my soda all over my PC screen there Tommy!
  8. Will Jeff be playing the Call for the Bulls?
  9. IMHO, I recall Schilke being the MP of choice by many of the guys I knew. The Bill Chase 6A4A was the leading candidate for the screamers. I have played the 13A4A since 1981. I am on only my second one of these. I agree with Larrie, the Monette is definitely worth the $$$, especially if playing pro.
  10. Let's not forget the man himself, MF!
  11. You know me don't you, and back in the day I had the MF flugel Jet Tone and the Al Hirt trumpet Jet Tone. They are both lying around here somewhere. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Oh, here they are, my wife is using them for doorstops.
  12. Were you watching the 1st game at the new Texas Stadium or the last one at the old park? The old one had the Ravens playing the Fagboys, I mean cowboys. Hey, their starting QB rhymes with ####. I could not find on youtube the new version with the 4 valve horn. The old one was really sweet and in "F". And like Donny says, I wish I could play that bad. Also, I thought that the 4th valve on a piccolo was to slot the high notes better, am I wrong? I never played more than 3, heck 2 valve G bugles were a test.
  13. To clarify, it correctly says that the Schaumburg Guardsmen is the corps in the commercial, but it also states: "#100 Realm: Advertising Question: A 1975 television commercial for a national fried chicken chain featured a drum and bugle corps marching through a picnic. Tell us the name of the fried chicken franchise, AND the name of the corps. Answer: Kentucky Fried Chicken; The Guardsmen. Song: Ballet in Brass--- The Madison Scouts "
  14. Jim, you are correct. I am putting two episodes together. The episode I was describing had the Mayberry Band, hence the trombone. If I recall, was it the episode where Mayberry was going to be in a movie and when the director returned to film, everyone had became "Hollywood"? What was the answer on Jeopardy? thanks.

Please PM me with offers, thanks.
  16. So by saying that, then it is safe to assume that those are the dam rifles, the dam tube socks, the dam dolphin shorts, the dam trees, the dam tube tops, the dam water, etc...................... Sorry for the "Vacation" reference, but it took me a dozen or more times seeing the movie to get that joke.
  17. Curious, why does it state that the Madison Scouts played "Ballet for Brass? in the answer.
  18. A few quick facts on the Andy Griffith episode. The Mayberry D&B was getting ready to go to the annual state legion parade. The mayor thought they stunk so he wasn't going to let them attend. Meanwhile a local who made it big in rock & roll, played by the same actor who played Roscoe P. Coltrane in Dukes of Hazzard, was back in town with his band. Andy came up with the idea to have the "pro" musicians fill in and show the mayor how much better they had become. They march past him and then disappear around the corner where they switch uni's with the hired guns. Mayor is impressed and they get their trip. Something says the Bob Denver was one on the rock & roll band members. Barney played cymbals, Andy was DM and Floyd the Barber played trombone.
  19. As far as the USMC D&B's being on TV, we were singled out in the early 80's by Chuck Edwards (founder of Hollywood Knights D&B) in DCW/DCN for being the only drum corps to get TV exposure. This was right after we appeared live on west coast TV at the Little League World Series in San Berndino. The girl who was to sing the National Anthem with us froze and never sang a word, live on TV. We had several appearances on local TV in the LA area during the 4 years I was there. My most memorable one was in San Francisco, the same hotel where Squeaky Fromme shot President Ford. It was for a President Reagan dinner. We were playing "Pagliacci" and just as I started to play the solo, a TV camera lit up and the light nearly blinded me. I couldn't see right the rest of the night. We also have a major movie appearance, Rocky III, final fight scene as the enter the ring. Even though it's Madison Square Garden in the movie, it was actually filmed in L.A., 2001. One of the 2 sop players that Clubber Lang (Mr. T) knocks over is PFC Jim O'Keefe. He went on to the rank of Master Gunnery Sargent and DM for the Commandent's Own. We had a soprano player play taps at the beginning of a Charles Bronson film where he played a border patrol agent. The Commandent's Own appear in a episode of Major Dad, where he gets a chance to perfrom with the Silent Drill Platoon.
  20. This rings a bell with me, I am thinking we played at it when I was in the USMC 29 Palms D&B, early 80's.
  21. He also holds the record in SCA Alumni for quitting and then rejoining.
  22. I actually know top row, 3rd over from the left, marched with him for many years at SCA. He and one of our top sops went to Sky late 80's, I think. He can now be found drumming with SCA Alumni. He rides a white Harley. He's been known to be "fast". His last name could actually be 2 seperate last names. The 1st a flower, the second a hot dog. He seems to share his 1st name with others in the pic.
