  1. A bit premature, but we can hope! The race is still too close to call, no matter what they say on DCP.
  2. My son is equally closed mouthed about the changes. He did say the closing drill was "scary". Someone who saw a recent rehearsal heard lots of horn clangs during the drill. I'm sure they'll get it all worked out.
  3. Nope--you just have to "follow" the tweeter. That's how all the groupies (am I showing my age?) follow their favorite celeb. I mainly follow CorpsScores to get DCI scores sent to my phone.
  4. Rumor has it Crown might have some ending changes either tonight or in Allentown. Wish we had some reviewers who could confirm this. Go Crown. Rach on!!!! All the best to all the Corps tonight!
  5. OK--I see your choice of words here. Son just says it's awesome and "pretty scary drill wise". Won't say more.
  6. The Corps line up in a concert arc (like for encore) and play the show without marching. If it's raining, might make problems with electronics. (Thinking about Crown's show with the piano solos.) Edit: Last again. Sigh!
  7. Yes--Herbert is definitely in a class by himself. This is his age-out year. I'm going to miss seeing him on the field next season!
  8. Thanks! Rain--glad to hear it stopped. Hopefully the field is OK. Good luck to all the Corps tonight! Go Crown!
  9. I assume the show has started, correct? Any reviews or tweets?
  10. Open Class sheets don't correlate to the World Class sheets that will be used to judge Prelims/Semis/Finals. You can probably search DCP and find the point difference, but I think the current top 12 are safe. Top 17--probably not. Edit: OK guys--I type pretty fast, but you still beat me. Kudos!
  11. Yes--got my vote! Also: Academy's piccolo trumpet solo and Spirit's flugel solo are also tops!
  12. I tried to do this at Finals last year as we were in one of the upper levels. However, we were sitting in the Crown block seats with large groups of Cadets and Cavies fans close by. The crowd noise and cheering made it impossible to get an accurate reading.
  13. I've also wondered about tuning. Barbershop quartets can hit a chord and it just rings--and sounds louder. But is it really? If a Corps is playing in perfect tune (got those 3rds and 5ths just where they need to be), will they sound louder? And will they actually BE louder? I'm way beyond what I know about acoustics, so if there are any PhDs in acoustic engineering or in music out there, feel free to chime in.
  14. With only a few data points for SCV's show, I can't say for sure. But, I think you're probably right.
  15. As was pointed out last year at Quarterfinals, many corps aim for the Press Box and some better than others. So, probably yes, some direct sound went over the lower seats. But, also IIRC volume drops off exponentially the further away you are. Just guessing here--but if I measured where you were sitting, the overall numbers might have been lower (due to distance), but the spreads might have been closer (more horns aimed at you). I hope I'm explaining this well. Thanks!
  16. Bummer! I hope EVERYONE gets well for these last 2 weeks!
  17. It could also be because of concert Bass Drum hits in the pit. I didn't mark anything special for that in my notes. A little BD goes a long way! (Pun intended--in a nice way.)
  18. This! In an interview with Dan Potter in Atlanta, he said he didn't have any guard experience--he just hung out and picked up the moves. Cool!
  19. Congrats Cavies! Way to go Spirit!!! And thanks to all the Corps tonight!
  20. Post on Spirit's Facebook page says there is a hump or ridge in the middle of the field that makes things interesting.
  21. Actually, for the Atlanta show Spirit had turned down their amps quite a bit. I was even going to measure the audio and sound effects during Spirit's show, but hearing the marked difference (from Gadsden), I didn't bother.
  22. OK--here are the rest of my measurements and notes. For each corps, they should be in music order. I don't have all the corps reps memorized, so I may call anything slow a "ballad" and use generic terms like opener, closer, next section, etc. when I didn't know the tune title. I was able to measure over a time span (usually a defined section of the corps' show) and then could see the max level on the meter, which is presented here with notes on where it occurred. Hopefully, those of you more familiar with the music will be able to match the measurements to the section. Of course, for the "ballad" there is usually (but not always) a nice crescendo which represents the max value. P&B = "park & bark" And see the correction for Cascades. 23. Sorry--I didn't think about doing any measurements until the 2010 season. The only show I saw live in 2009 was in Atlanta and we were seated pretty far back.
