  1. As one who was taught by several Jesuit professors, was not in fact the corps name Sancians taken from the name of the island where SFX died? At least that is the story in S. Weymouth to this day. I know Xavier Academy in Manhattan, NYC has its own parade drum and bugle corps and drill team. They also do football and soccer games with a limited drill, old school style.
  2. Well done! But you too didn't mention the Crossmen. And God knows how many Protests the Jesuits have been part of. Including a hand in the great Protestation. And would not Teilhard de Chardin, S.J. dig the Blue Knights' show about the development of Life in Circles?
  3. Thank you everyone for your votes and comments. I am very pleased with how many views this question actually got. However, only a small amount of viewers voted which may mean that a lot of lurkers, I mean guests, are actually discussing this question which of itself may be a very good thing. Now comes the awkward part. I don't know the protocol of asking the moderators to close the thread. But as the OP of this thread, if certain someone(s) continue to hijack the thread away from the question of the OP, you have my permission (if you need it) and my agreement to close the thread IF the posts fall away from the specific original question. I fully concur with BigBad Bari and 84BDsop and thank DT1 for his previous posts in the same direction. Certain poster(s) don't understand that they are cyber-bullying in their persistence to hijack threads for their own aggrandizement. But if there are more who wish to debate Sanford vs. DCI ring, have on..
  4. Thank you. If it is funny, it is because of the contributions of several. I didn't originally imagine writing a witty post, just an interesting observation. Then I started to recall various conversations. That's my narrative. I hope you got the concept.
  5. Given who chooses and pays for staff, did anyone happen to notice Dilbert for today, 9/25 http://www.dilbert.com/
  6. The drum corps year can be understood to have four distinct seasons: Designer deliberations, winter camps, Spring training, and summer tour. But it is in that first season that many corps chance to fall. What really happens during designer deliberations? What show is picked and how do they view it? ( Edit note: Any show nicknames used below are not original from me but come from my sponsorees and their busmates who marched several corps this season as they comment about their peers.) Several years back when Marc Sylvester was interviewed a few times, most notably by Steve Rondinaro and Dennis Delucia, he as drill design consultant made a big deal about picking the right narrative with characters the audience might understand. His hand was clearly seen in Cadets' '05 and '06. Since then he's been with several corps, now Colts, almost as many as Peterson, Beddis, and Van Doren as they seemingly go the rounds of all DCI corps. 2013 might have been different however, as it seems the top 5 corps and the Troopers presented concepts rather than narratives. Sure Crown did have it's poem, but it wasn't the whole show nor it's point which is still being debated. But certainly Crown did not give us a straight line narrative in "Einstein at Myrtle Beach." Nor did the "Bleacher Creatures from Canton," "Hopkins goes to the Barber," or "Tetherballs in Siberia." Not even the one authentic story performed by SCV was a narrative while they "Rotated France." (Their great visual program also gave them the nickname "Frogs' Legs.") Compare this to "Spirit Getting Sauced," Regiment's "Guardgirl fights evil Queen Joan and Suta-saurus," Madison's "Boot camp, Battle, and Brotherhood," Cavies' "Behind the Closet Door," BK "Going round in Circles," BS "No one does Voodoo like you do," and most certainly Boston's "150 Shades of Gray climaxing in Rise" for which they eventually blushed. Oregon Crusaders and Mandarins certainly told us narratives as did Lola and the Academy. And then there was Pacific Crest. So in this "off season" while we debate our technical proficiencies showing whether we preferred the precision of the Cavaliers pits' "Flag-o-matic" to BD's "Clump and Dump" (where a tick less approach is written for the guardster to take a heap of flashflags and randomly toss them on to field while the retriever has so many counts of free form to find the flag and come back to the specified dot,) consider what the designers might be deliberating for 2014. Will we see more concept shows or narratives this season?
  7. I agree with you about Cadets. But are you saying that making one think and reflect is absurd??? Hoppie doesn't think so with all the journal writings Cadets do. To infer that thinking and reflecting is beyond percussionists leaves the door open to way too many wise-cracks from horn players and others.
  8. A number of previous posters in this thread keep making declamatory accusations about Regiment yet fail to provide any anecdotes or proof to support their accusatory claim. I know the SUTA pledge binds one to keep things in the phamily, but to the phans and others who read this thread the posts seem bitter and almost incredulous because of the lack of full disclosure. Or should I say, phull disclosure. I was always taught from the time I was little that if you point a finger at someone, the other four fingers point back to you. Is there any merit to the claims or are you just giving Regiment the finger?
  9. I am told that the logo on the Cadets FB has been amended again, perhaps to keep us guessing and discussing.Though Cadets did win the 2013 Sanford, I note that the WGI class previously mentioned by a poster is PIO, now PIW. I wonder if this will be a group similar to Cavies' Green Thunder or SCVC's or BDB's for C2 types? or will it be for the more experienced from schools that don't have their own program. Time will tell.
  10. Subscript to this announcement is the addition of Gordon Henderson (UCLA band, SCV) to staff as consultant and Dr. Will Plenk to return. Doctor Plenk? Way to go Will; it was only a few seasons back we were seeing you as that fair haired Cadets' DM from Lindenhurst challenging us with The Door!, etc.
  11. Imagine you are a percussionist in a DCI World Class corps. Some years the winner of the World Class division is not the winner of the Fred Sanford trophy for best percussion. If you were a percussionist in a World Class corps in DCI, which award is more important to you? Why?
  12. Looks like Carolina Crown will maintain Thom Hannum has percussion arranger, along with rest of 2013 design team according to the corps' website today, but there is no mention of who the instructors will be for 2014 for percussion or any other caption. http://www.carolinac...orps/2014-staff We can only imagine how hard it will be to design a show better for them and the audience and judges than this past summer.. No inkles yet emanating out of Cadets' design meetings in NYC this past Sunday and Monday. Their website had suggested possible announcement Monday IF they had come to some conclusion. Evidently not. Or perhaps after the BD fiasco on the international synch rights and overseas distribution of DVDs, they are now looking at intergalactic rights before announcing???!!!:shutup:/>/>
  13. Then again, he could be saying Grace before (d)eals, ha, ha.
  14. Is the guy on the right (side two) praying for guidance or out of frustration given who else is at the table?:w00t:/>/>
  15. Please join me in offering a prayer of thanksgiving today that the life of my sister Regina was spared when the World Trade Towers were attacked on 9/11. She and her staff were out of her office that day at an off-site meeting. One of her staffers stopped at the office to pick up some materials enroute to the meeting for which he never arrived. It was 4 days wrought with anxiety and waiting until we learned he was ok. Not so were countless dozens of my neighbors, parishioners and friends, including a number of alums of the many small corps in metro-NYC area. Amonst the dead were four of my former students, Michael Cahill, Thomas McMahon, Colin Farrell, and Conor Lynch. Only Thomas' remains were identified to this day. Please keep their families, including Mike's wife and daughter in your prayers.I don't have PTS from that day or the many funerals although the memories of watching the burning towers from the windows of where I was stationed twenty miles away are still vivid.I am praying for peace in Syria and the Middle East as I am certain you are.Thanks.
  16. Thank you... 1) for being the parent who is concerned about your kid, is willing to sacrifice for his best, and willing to listen as well as speak. 2) for being balanced enough to reconsider and humble enough to say "I need to grow." 3) for being a fan of the members and realizing that their experience may be different from your likes and experience but their hunger for excellence and entertainment is the same. 4) for letting us in on what might have stayed the private musings of someone who chose not to be bitter but better. Thank you.
  17. Turkey of course provides many different visual perspectives and possibilities: from whirling divershes to the crusades to the multi-cultural Istanbul of today. What color possibilities! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJIofU-0jC0
  18. The separation proposed of the corporation and the performance unit seems prudent. However, I would venture that more drum corps folks would have energies and plans to develop the performance side of the balance with its responsibilities than they would be energized to focus on the corporation side of the balance with its responsibilites. The second mentioned might overwhelm the instinct to start the first although they cannot be solo. Most who accent dbc as a youth development opportunity or a music/fine arts opportunity would be prone to accent the first not the second wherein lies the demise of too many units.
  19. I as a fly on the wall of BD's '14 design meeting had to squeeze in as Sam the Spider, curled up like a green team gear, Charlie the maroon centipede, and Manny the Ft. Mill moth who would become a purple butterfly, had already beaten me on board. SCV had captured Hearst Castle in their last foray in Parisian squabbles and had holed up there to host their VC championship banquet while PC had cornered the beach resorts along the Carmel coast. So here the SS Concord was afloat somewhere before reaching Catalina to discuss, dissect, and determine a better direction for the '14 season. The carpenters had been let go as the cabinets did not need to be altered since '13 had proven unlucky with no new trophies to add. They had tried to get that creative genius from JDFuncorps to join them, but he was holding out for tour money with Spirit. Thus the mood of the meeting seemed strained, even stiff, yet this veteran staff paddled on. They were debating whether they would continue last year's strategy of having Plan9 and BDSop post a new thead about BD every other day on DCP so that the corps was not forgotten in the public eye. "But DeeRae said we'd make loads of money from doing that movie thing! But today's kids aren't buying enough of our souvies. Where's the money? They just want those little monsters and anything with purple pants. We didn't plan well enough for their reaction to Einstein and friends. We should have had all that screaming and cheering in Indy, well before we even took the field. Even the judges now are doing that funny counting. And our blue system kids—since we officially dropped "C' from the alphabet (for Cadets, Cavaliers, and Crown), all they are reciting is A, B, B, D! Plus they keep shouting Blooo when we come out and Canton is claiming royalties. God help us if Denver wants the same if it's at night." "We've got to get back to our roots! The audience and some judges want a "dog and pony show." Even our alumni started to complain that we're too cerebral. Don't mention "ponies." Crown did that already in '07 after they paid royalties to Troopers who think hosses belong to them. Remember the mocking of our coat racks?" "Well if it's "park and bark" they want, we'll have to give it to them. That will get us out of the dog house. Yeah, maybe we need to throw the audience and some judges a bone." "Wait, wait, wait. I the great Chandler have an idea. This article I have been reading to distract me from my sea-sickness says that Americans spend 47.7 Billion dollars on the care of their pets. What if we could tap into that? What if we really gave them "park and BARK?" "But what if Torchia or Grandma are 'cat people?" "Well the cub scout pack of cheddar- headers already did "Cats." No they did 'Memories." We could always pick other numbers from that show." "And Wayne has always wanted to do a jazzed up version of Carnival of the Animals by Saint-Saens to give it real zip compared to what those classical Rockford rangers did with it." "Well, we'd have to be careful with animals, I mean Crown already has Barney and wormholes, Phantom has the dragon, Hopkins is always talking about the Elephant in the room, and DCP would expect dinosaurs." "DCP is no problem because we could try "Me and You and a Dog Named Boo" by Lobo as our warm-up. Who'd bark at Boo? Plus Brian can be our drum major with Scoobie-Doo and Snoopy. ScoJo got excited. "How about if the pit started it off with a seven voice canon of "How much is that doggie in the window?" for the pre-show? We could call it our tribute to Annette Funicello. Then half the guard could be costumed like canines and the other half as felines. We could trade the red balls in for tennis balls and balls of yarn." "Well after last year's outfit and tattoos, leather and chains wouldn't be a far stretch!" "No, how about if instead of the guard, it was BDC dressed like that? As little puppies and kitties! We would have kids and their grandparents in the palm of our hands! Who wouldn't feel gushy seeing the little darlings? They all mastered the System Blue already: blue ice, good; yellow snow, bad. Blue skies, good; brown nappies, bad. Etc. Besides, BDB are still popping their pimples over their loss to SCVC; using the little kids would shock them back into focus. DG chirped up. "I'm getting into this. We could do a Bocook thing and bop and chop great dog tunes like Lassie, and Rin-Tin-Tin and Danny Elfman's version of the Jetsons for Astro, of course. And Elvis's Hound Dog, and "Who Let the Dogs Out?" by the Ba Ha men. "And What about 'Cat's Cradle" by Stevens? Oh, this is going to be good! Look at all the numbers I get to choose from!!! http://dogvacay.com/...puppy-playlist/ http://answers.yahoo...14144557AAuZHxc http://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=68339 Emmons and Ryan chimed in together, "Well we could rotate a bone, do a lot of stop-and-goes, and use dog houses as props complete with seating areas, mirrors, and even fire hydrants, made from PVC pipe of course. But will we still get to do the special drill we've been working on, 7 different ways to make the letter G...for Gibbs,of course?" "If it gets us a ring! No poosey-footing around this season. Our soloists will sound like dog whistles and that will get Saucedo and his Carmel Greyhounds whistling in Indy for more. Yes, this is our year!!! So we are agreed ladies and gentlemen. It's "Best Friends, Canines and Cats" or as it will be forever known on the tour busses nationwide, "Paws and Claws, BD '14" That is, until some band director steals it. Then we'll get them with royalties! (cNdP '13)

  21. No, the photo here is of the great late Bill Cook. You can fool some of the people some of the time, but not all of the people all of the time.:devil:/>
  22. There have been complaints over the years that the Midwest based DCI front office does seem to use A LOT of Phantom and Cavies pictures, more so than let's say Academy or Pacific Crest.
  23. If that is the same Mark Hart who marched Cadets with May, Sacktig, DeGroff, Vanderkoff, etc. in the Cadets' sop line, and is the star who leaped fences in Madison for their award winning opener in '85, I know he was doing DCI visual judging for a few seasons back and was extremely helpful to the Open Class corps although he did some World Class shows too. He's a super guy, knowledgeable, talented, and spot on.
  24. Perhaps it would be good to cite and specifically name what universities are so revered and successful in placements. I'm sure others would be interested as well.
