Kay. Thank you for correcting me on my spelling of Pequa Squaws. I see nothing in the definition of color guard that speaks of dancing. And they march? When was the last show you attended? I'm all for evolution especially when it comes to calling an ace an ace and a spade a spade. Too bad you did not march with the Squaws. You would know what a color guard is.

LegalEagle. Because you do not like what I have to say, you keep accusing me of speaking of the modern product in a demeaning and condescending way. I have said it in previous posts and will say it one more time. I GO TO SO CALLED DRUM CORPS SHOWS AND ENJOY THEM FOR WHAT THEY ARE. I have also commented on the amazing talent involved and that in my day, I would not have been able to do the things these kids/adults do now. I thought this forum was for people with diverse opinions. Oh and you really don't need to put your "drum corps historian" had on for me. I have been participating and observing since the 50s.

What is condescending about calling what YOU consider a guard a dance troup? What I see is all dancing in these modern shows so why can't I call them dance groups without being accused of being condescending. Is there something degrading about the term dance troupe? The Pequa Squas were a color guard!

Downtown, there is a rich history involving the Gay Blades. Thank you for sharing some of it. "Sweets For My Sweet" which was a marginal hit record for the Drifters back in the 60s was brilliantly interpreted for the Gay Blades as I recall. One of my all time fav drum corps tunes!

LegalEagle, In what post did I say I hate the current product? I have said, that you seem to ignore, in a few of my posts is that I attend DCI and DCA shows and that I enjoy them for what they are. And yes, most of what I loved about drum corps is missing from the current product which to me resembles marching bands. I do not think a marching brass band with no bugles in the brass line should call itself a drum and bugle corps or drum corps. The first line of the wikipedia definition of "drum and bugle corps" says drum and bugle corps also known as drum corps so calling them drum corps when they do not utilize bugles doesn't cut it either. By the way, I know all the four letter words that you know but I have not used them or xxxx's when corresponding with anyone on this forum. I have also not told anybody to "go to he'll" so, while you are accusing me of disrespect, you might want to audit your own posts. If you and your buddy Jeff don't like what I have to say, skip over my posts. Have a nice day!

Because of you I now know how much work and time it takes to participate in a "drum corps" and that scores don't matter to the corps members (is the Brooklyn bridge still for sale?). Perhaps you could explain to me how you can call them drum and bugle corps when there are no bugles in the brass line. Oh and while you're at it, why not elaborate on why you are insulted by the fact that I think they should be called brass bands. After all, I do attend the brass band contests and enjoy them.

legalEagle, my comments are one persons opinion and I am aware that they are not popular with many who post on this forum. It is not my intention to put you or anyone else down. If I was 20 years old again, I could not begin to do what these kids do in these incredibly demanding show nowadays. If you are offended by my belief that it was no longer drum and bugle corps by the time you first picked up a flag (as you put it) then you must be very sensitive. If everyone on this forum felt the same way about everything, this would be a very boring forum. It appears to me that only a fraction of the people who view the posts on this forum actually posts themselves and who knows, I may have more supporters than I think. Having said that, I have no problem with anyone who comes down on me for my beliefs. There some very gracious people on this forum (of course many of them happen to be ex Sunrisers) and some people who get offended easily. And then there are most likely some people like me who are old and bitter. Just saying.....

And you think when DCA came was formed, they were not referring to drum and bugle corps? I am being technical and that is why I don't think a brass band with no bugles should be calling themselves drum and bugle corps. Look at their banners that they carry in parades. They don't say drum corps, they say drum and bugle corps. They both mean the same thing and always have.

I believe that when one uses the term "drum corps" they mean "drum and bugle corps" since the two terms have been used interchangeably as far back as the 60s and perhaps before that. So, what I am saying is why would you call what we have now drum corps or drum and bugle corps when there are no bugles being utilized (in most cases). Would you call a mummers band a drum corps? And, just for the record, I go to and enjoy DCI and DCA shows as I have been able to accept them for what they are....brass bands. They have no right calling themselves drum and bugle corps anymore. That is an insult to the legacy!

And Legal Eagle, I guess you missed the irony in my post as well. The fact is that "drum corps" has moved further and further away from resembling drum corps. As you know, most modern "drum corps" utilize 3 to 4 valve brass instruments which are commonly used by marching and brass bands and they are certainly not bugles. I hope that someday soon "drum corps" will be referred to as marching brass bands so we can finally lay drum corps to rest as it died years ago. Can't wait to be attacked for this one!!!

Shouldn't you be busy looking up the definition of "glockenspiel?

The DCA has just announced that each corps will also be required to have six extra mikes in the pit. One for the narrator, one for a rapper and the remaining four for a vocal quartet. This will go far in maximizing the marching brass band experience.

Oh, I can't wait. All we need is louder glockenspiels!
