I want the Mandarins to have the #### "Wheelie" on the field in 2024.  This thing made me sick at Six Flags in high school. 😂  @Chief Guns @MandarinMom

That thing was called the Witch's Wheel at Cedar Point.  One time on college road trip, there was zero line for it and the gal running it was forced to do this stupid dialog about it that included a witch cackle.  She was so bored because no one was riding it but she had to do the whole dialog and run it every so often to draw people to it.  Her whole delivery and cackle were aboslutely sarcastic as heck and hilariously so.

We decided, "Let's give her some riders and run through the line fast after getting off to see how many times in a row we can ride it before we feel we can't."

    That number was 3.

  2. They do have DCI scheduling three consecutive shows in June that basically serve as the California open class prelims/semis/finals. Even did a full retreat at the end of the last one.

They seemed fairly well attended if I recall.

Gold was the only one to continue on.

Of course. No one got paid by DCI for appearing cause open class.  Unlike if they banded together and did the shows themselves.

it wouldn't affect the use of props, but it would stop the use of tarps, as they actually could damage a grass field

Back a few years, there was at least one show site that wouldn't allow props.  Had to do with the weight or recent rain that could possibly damage the field.

Yeah i think this was the show at Chester where the Philadelphia Union play.  Led to the whole deal where DCI doesn't go there anymore.

It definitely would impact the use of props over a certain weight tearing into the turf.   And/or getting straight up stuck if it was wet.

  4. Yeah. With NFL stadia moving to mega domes.  I don't see full grass being viable.  I mean they ... could I suppose.  They rake enough money in to do a new sod on a tray every week probably.

And frankly, using Rodgers' injury to renew the cry for grass fields seems laughable.  I mean sure, the turf situation might not have helped him avoid injury, but the fact that he's a 39 year old man with a battered body playing a full contact sport where he's the target for getting hit might be a larger contributing factor.

How difficult is it to be Treasurer & Finance Committee chair 2,700 plus miles from Santa Clara?  And how does this position differ from a CEO?

ps - I suppose there is precedent at SCV for remote work as it is my understanding that the bingo manager lives in Hawaii.

Work from Anywhere is practically a norm in finance anymore.  My sister is an accountant with a large firm and they finally started making her come into work three days a week again mostly because they need to justify the cost of the office building.  Almost all her work is done from the office with those in other locations.

Can't love this enough.  Would love to hear some of his stories! ❤️💙💚

I posted some things back in 2016 when we found a picture of his corps going through old pictures and it started a whole conversation.  I had no idea where to put it.  Since it was sort of an all age thing mostly of vets but had a couple of HS kids...but not a DCA as they did the AL circuit back then.  So I threw it in the All Age historical forum.

  7. The more I think of it, the more I'd love to see this as show theme.  It'd be a hell of a design challenge to pull off though. To make a show that is about some of the most iconic and innovative drill moves...but incorporated into a modern enough style to compete.

Done right, it could be "the show" that ignites a move forward in integrating drill and what we call modern staging in more intricate ways.

I salute you @MikeN.  I was just communicating with @Terri Schehr via the DM that I miss her posts.  I've learned so much from you "seasoned alumni" from the 60s-70s.  I watched my first corps show as a HS student in Birmingham in 1979. (also attended in 1980.)  Think some of y'all were marching my in my favorite corps. Much respect!

Totally.  I was in the bando world in the 80s to a degree that was 'corps adjacent' to some degree given to who was doing the creative work and some instruction for us.   But not on discussion boards for the activity until my 2014 return to following it more closely.  I blame seeing Bloo on fire in Ft. Wayne for that return. I immediately "hmmm. i bet there's a forum for yammering about all this somewhere."  And DCP is what sprung up.

But I love the yesteryear legacy conversations.  Heck, I've shared my dad's 1956 experience as a teen marching with a bunch of war vets in a corps where he was brought on board because, "you're the only one who can read the sheet music for the battery."  Hearing him tell stories about the show, the stays overnight they did at some places, etc. never really gets old for me.  I also love him seeing boggle on where the activity has gone now and his appreciation for it...including some droll dry lines.

  9. Whelp here we go.

That bit about a possible regional tour tells me they might do what the Cali open class corps did last year and stop there without coming to Indy.

If that's their plan, they need to be up front with the auditioners.  People rushing pay to audition and perhaps signing contracts thinking they're gonna be part of the big comeback and then paying whatever fees to support this staff and only do a half season....not cool.

In practice it could be on par with the "restart with SCVC and build from there" idea some were floating here, but doing it in World Class.  Because face it, they'll want the income and Open Class doesn't provide that.

That said, if they're taking their big bingo profits and subsidizing the staff salaries to run this comeback, ok then.  But I suspect they'll be charging full price for contracting and they need to sort it out and be upfront about what their tour is gonna look like.

Ooh. the folks behind Onyx and BAC's animal farm artistic design.  Those masks and such were wonderfully creepy and the body movement stuff they had the guard doing was very animal.  I remember when they came out for retreat and the whole guard was doing their animal things. It was fantastic.
