  1. Yep, I bought the CD as soon as it came out, and I thought "color guard" when heard Paradise Circus. I love the feel of the slower version.
  2. Hey I am not in the judges head, and I haven't looked at the recaps that closely... Plus this is where my lack in experience comes in, I can't really give a personal opinion on difficulty. Of course that's my interpretation only, and I could be wrong on what the score translates to. I am no expert.
  3. Even if you are a tuba player (which I was too), both activities are judged somewhat the same. If you look at repcaps, you have "vocabulary" and "excellence" for movement, equipment and ensemble which Onyx receive 3rd, 4th and even 5th place scores. pretty much showing the weaknesses Scott is talking about, and the GE scores show "repertoire" and "performance" had 1st and 2nd place scores, which includes difficulty/demand and how well they perform it. So they were rewarded for demand. It's something true for DC as well: GE wins shows. Get the GE scores down, and a group can get away with a lot of weaknesses in specific categories.
  4. Right? Same with the DCA forum. You always have to repeat when it's a personal opinion, repeat parts of your previous posts because people just don't really read them or read things that weren't there, sarcasm has to be used really lightly, can't possibly make a grammar mistake because if they can't flame you on your logic, they will on your grammar! Discussion forums are exhausting. lol But have you ever been to hockey or baseball forums, I'm only going on what my husband says here, but it's pretty nasty. DCP is puppies and rainbows in comparison. anyhow, back on topic...
  5. Scott, I love this post. I put in bold the parts where I agree with the most. I was sitting really close at Finals and could see all of the issues you bring in your 3 points. Does it change anything to talk about it now? Of course not, but the thing is with "art", we can be just as passionate about criticizing a piece as the designer was when creating it. Onyx's show just isn't my cup of tea. I understand the show (well... only after reading about it and about Charles Bukowski's poems) but I hope it isn't where CG is heading, and this is really just my opinion here, a personal preference. If I had to say something positive, I loved how the performers gave all they had. If they didn't commit a 100%, that show would have looked silly. just my 2 cents :)
  6. I don't know about Scholastic Open, but Ars Nova IW does something similar at the beginning of their show. I just looked on the Fan Network to make sure it's them I saw. It's pretty cool.
  7. Mike I recall seeing and hearing more than 2 people in the crowd... haha I kinda figured no one would "review" us, though. It's great to read comments like that! Thank you to the OP for the review!
  8. I am glad we made it on someone's list! (Sonnor) :) I LOVE Alter Ego's show!
  9. now that's frustrating. Makes me think of the football game I went to last Friday with Genevieve. This guy right behind us had a vuvuzela type flute and was using it every 5 seconds. Ended up Genevieve immitated the flute he had with her hands (much louder, of course, for anyone who knows Genevieve) everyone laughed and the guy stopped. All this to say that some people just don't realize how obnoxious they can be. Very disrespectful, too.
  10. I blame age. We are just too old now to "leap out of our seats" What if we break a hip? juuuuuust kiddin'
  11. wow that's a lot of drum corps! (in years, not numbers of corps)
  12. 99 Brigs - 1st 00 Brigs - 1st 01 Brigs - 1st 02 Brigs - 1st 03 Brigs - 2nd 04 Brigs - 2nd 05 Brigs - 4th 06 Brigs - 6th 07 Brigs - 5th 08 Brigs - 7th 09 Brigs - 7th I didn't march 06-08-09. But you get the point. Anything can happen. Some rises while others fall.
  13. Bush is at 6.21 points from the 5th position and they would finish 4th a week later? I'd like to see that much magic happen on a field at finals! Given DCA's usual predictability, I won't "bank" on that one for sure! Good luck everybody!
  14. Well I can't post it here... It's a bit off topic (not that the OP is serious anyway) but I'll gladly send anything your way by email. I've put all the data DCA.org had into a database, I can work the info any way you want it! Shows, cities, scores, placements, spreads.... I just wished I had recaps. That would be even more complete. Yes, I am a stats junky. lol And Jim, Yes I have all the corps names listed as well. Keep in mind I only listed the corps that the DCA score history database provided. There might be information missing (shows, corps...)
  15. Blackstar numbers adds to 24. Now I have made the stat about this. I took every single stat posted on the DCA score history website, put all that together, and made a nice little graph of the number of corps per year competing in the DCA circuit since 1965, seasons shows included. Wanna see it? (slow summer at work)
  16. It looks good like that, but you have to add that while there are more corps now in DCA, the number of members per corps is significantly smaller than in 2000 with in exception maybe the top 3 open class corps. That situation is even more true when you see 2 corps that have been so succesful in past years struggle with membership and go inactive in 2010. (Brigadiers and Crusaders)
  17. 1. Spartacus 2. Harmonic Journey 3. Into the Light 4. Faust
  18. Oh so THAT makes it reality. It's all just opinions. I loved DCI this year, it was a great season. Like I said earlier, first time since 1994 that I enjoyed the whole top 12. But that's just me, and a bunch of other people saying that. lol
  19. What's odd? DCA pits manage to get the sound through no matter how loud they have to play it. YOU might be happy that you can hear it fine, and it might be fine to YOU, but from what I have gathered, it really sucks for the players to play their parts FFFF to be heard, and there is a lot of parts that do get lost in the ensemble anyway. But since I am a brass person, I guess you and I are just not looking for the same thing when we listen to a pit. And that's fine. But not odd. I absolutely agree, like I did mention in my post, and here is the quote: that some DCI corps are over doing the amps and we are losing parts in the drums and brass.
  20. Agree with you Jami. Although some pits are too loud now in DCI, amps definitely keeps the pit players from breaking their wrists trying to match the powerful hornlines' volume. It's always been a complaint from my friends in the pit. They have to play wonderful parts as loud as possible and it's completely lost in the ensemble anyway. Some corps struggles with the balance, but amps do help pits to be heard while playing a reasonable volume.
  21. I am not sure what the big deal is. Corps are trying different things (new or not) and some of them are really interesting. It's the first years since 1994 that I enjoyed almost the whole top 12! Teal Sound and their electric guitar solo is the most AWFUL thing I have ever heard in Drum Corps. And I am pretty sure it's not going to catch on. Narration is back down to a minimum. Some corps use synths in a very smart and innovative (for drum corps) way. Some others, not so much. It's about trials and errors, somethings will remain, some won't. The essence of drum corps is definitely still there. The kids are still learning about family, performance, working together, discipline, passion, focus... The show designs are a tad different. So what? It's sad that some people will turn their back on juniors and be so mean about it too. But like the OP said. There is still DCA for the rest of you guys!
