That was a gutsy move!

'76 Bridgemen - the uniforms (in an era when people were even less forgiving). Note the original '75 Cadet uniforms at the 00:50 mark in the attached video. -

Was that in '74? -

I remember seeing Garfield early season in '82 and thinking "What are they doing?" Then saw them later in the season as well as at finals and my reaction became "Look at what they are doing - incredible!" -

There is a Vanguard show in the later '70s where they did asymmetrical drill during one part of the show. I can't remember the year or the piece they used (maybe during a percussion solo), but I remember noting that side one did not equal side two on purpose. I can't find the clip on YouTube anymore. -

'83 Vanguard - down ending '84 Vanguard - that percussion solo '82 Garfield - so many risks and it paid off beautifully -
There were portable cassette recorders not that far from the size of a Walkman earlier on. Many developed by Sony, the makers of the original Walkman. However they were expensive. The Walkman made them affordable for the general consumer. I remember the one I got. It was $100 back then which was a big chunk of change in comparison to now. I really hope the person who found it in the back of the taxi I left it in enjoyed it as much as I did.

Thank you - I had no idea.

Does anyone know when judges first started using tape recorders?

I suspect this is one of the original packages. The TV dinner was "invented" in 1953. Just read zip codes were implemented in 1963. I'm sure some of the originals are still being sold because rubber Turkey has a long shelf life.

2022 rule change I would like to see.
Continental replied to Phantom56's topic in DCI World Class Corps Discussions
The OP spoke of a rule change that was age related. DCA doesn't have an age restriction like DCI. Perhaps that is one of the reasons why no one is asking for rule changes in DCA. Do many know how DCA rules compare to DCI rules anyway? -
Perhaps my wanting to celebrate Thanksgiving along with you Americans has caused me to suffer under a tryptophan high as a result of too many Swanson Turkey TV dinners. AKA - I don't know what the heck I'm talking about.

Yes, but then there was '82 Garfield Cadets which was still under the tick system and whose approach to show design was quite new.
-
How many loved shows would have done much worse under the tick system? I'll point to the Crossmen '92 thread. If that show were judged under the tick system, I don't think it would have done so well. IMO there are a lot of issues with visual execution. But the current system allowed for it to become greater than the sum of it's parts because of the total package. On top of this, a show like Crossmen '92 would never have been attempted under the tick system.

So interesting! I completely forgot about what issue removing the American flag section would cause.
-
Do you remember if there was much controversy when scoring moved away from the tick system or was it generally accepted without issue? I don't remember and of course we didn't have the internet back then. I remember one rule change that I was not aware about before the tick system was abolished. In '80 guard members were allowed to retrieve equipment they had dropped as opposed to waiting for a judge to come by, pick it up and hand it back to them. I wasn't aware of the rule change when I went to see Key to the Sea that year. During one show I saw a guard member drop a rifle and pick it back up. My first thought was "Are you crazy!!!!! That's a major penalty!"

I remember looking at some of the contest scores on Fromthepressbox.com and seeing ridiculous jumps/drops between prelims and finals held on the same day.

I'm sure I'm not alone in saying sometimes Management is required to attend so many meetings that they have no time to manage. -

A past boss of mine, someone I worked with for 10 years, had the phrase "Meetings up - profits down." It has stuck with me since then. -
