  1. >>>Me thinks it will be a close one for first through fourth, with the fifth place corps out to a bit of a slower start than the rest.<<< Interesting comment ... I'm just curious to the "slower" start reference ... I saw them perform a full show last week ... is everyone else that much more "ready" for the first show? Thanks
  2. >>>Of the two dinosaurs, the VFW was the more evolved, I think.<<< Hard to tell who was more progressive ... most Jr shows during the season followed Legion sheets ... I only recall VFW sheets being employed at States and Nats ... maybe one or two other VFW Post sponsored shows ... I forget now which one banned the contra bass at Nats in 61 or 62 ... that, after a few corps had used them all season (Cabs, Garfield, St. Raphael's purchased the first "baby" Getzen's ... Tony S's "no dancing, prancing, or costumes" came as late as 1971 ... Times ... they were a changin' :-)
  3. >>>From the '50s through the mid '60s, it seemed three Jersey corps had a lock on virtually all the Legion and VFW championships. DCA was clearly an attempt to break the seniors out of that, and DCI followed suit a few years later in the puppy league.<<< Interesting view ... but, I think there were four ... on the Jr side was St. Vinnie's in the 50's and BS & Garfield in the 50's and 60's ... Chicago was the corps that broke the Jersey dominance, which was pretty much done after 1964 ... and, the Cabs on the AL Sr. side (I don't recall them ever competing in the VFW Nats, dominated by Prince, Skokie, Reilly and Archie ... then Reading) ... the Cabs AL run was ended by Rochester in 65 and the Hurcs in 67 and Baltimore in 69 ... in fact, after their win in 1966, Hawthorne was dethroned at the AL Nats until 1974 ... Good stuff ...
  4. >>>After the '65 Championship, Doc Sebastianelli arranged for - believe it or not - the American Legion to moderate a meeting which decided the direction of DCA for the next 50 years. From that meeting came the agreement which brought Caballeros to select DCA shows in '66 <<< and ... believe it or not, in the early stages of forming the DCA, Rev. Louis A. DeProfio of St. Raphael's in Bridgeport, offered to be a mediator between Hawthorne (Costello) and the Skyliners (Lefty) to see if their differences could be ironed out ... there was an article in DCN circa late 63/early 64 that outlined the effort ... I'll try to find it and post it (if able) ... Father Louie was good friends with Ray Samora and influential in bringing the WO to Bridgeport in 64 and 65 ... he was passionate about drum corps and was upset about the Lefty/Costello feud ... C'mon ... post some more history ... this stuff is fun! :-)
  5. >>>The sad thing there is whether anyone who stuck to it have time to find a spot elsewhere if they want to perform this season. I hope they are able to. <<< If they seek, I'm fairly certain they shall find ... it's probably a willingness to fit in where needed at this point when approaching Corps that have needs ... Good luck to them all ...
  6. Don't think so ... they won the Class A last year ... no? Speaking of Class A ... Guess #2 ... Windsor Regiment moves back to Class A ...
  7. Okay ... I'll guess that the White Sabers go Open ... :)

  9. I can still remember being with Sky in Hershey 1973 when this group of "nautical maids" approached us saying they wanted to see the Big Red Band ... OH MY! ... Mr. Toad's Wild Ride never seemed the same after ... neither one of us won ... and neither one of us cared ... LORDY, LORDY ... :-)
  10. Sorry guys, I'm all out of clues I guess. Well ... it ain't the Mariners ... :-)
  11. He's here all week, folks. Tickets are on e-bay ...
  12. How about Jack Barry's WINKY DINK SHOW???? "winky-dink and you" was the pioneer in interactive programming. The core of the program was children sent away for a kit. The kit had a plastic screen that stuck to the TV tube with static electricity. Crayons were used to draw on the screen. When a character needed special help, children would be asked to draw on the screen, give assistance and free the character from trouble. If a character needed to cross a river with no bridge, the viewer would draw a line so a crossing could be made and escape trouble. Jack Barry, the host, emphasized inviting a friend over to watch the program; sharing in the drawing of assistance was also important. Everyone watched and helped winky-dinky in his adventures and had fun. HOO HAA!!!!
  13. Wow ... read the last line of the article ... guess DCA weekend won't be coming back to Bridgeport soon ...
  14. The musical theme of McAllister's Wonderama was an orchestral arrangement of the song "I Ain't Down Yet" from Meredith Wilson's Broadway musical "The Unsinkable Molly Brown." If I'm not mistaken, Molly Brown was also Sonny Fox's theme ... I remember because it was the Yankee Rebels OTL in 61-2 or 3 :-)
  15. Of course, any hijacked thread would not be complete without mentioning Sandy Becker and Soupy Sales. ... or Sonny Fox and Wonderama! :-)
  16. Hmmm ... I wonder if Lionel Richie played lead for them ... :-)
  17. Hurcs are at 63,11 timing Post the link to what you're looking at because the Hurcs are no where to be found on what I'm looking at on Youtube ...
  18. Any links to youtube vids? ... All that I can find is groups of people marching in colored t-shirts and politicians talking along the parade route ... Thanks, Andy
  19. Wasn't the traffic jam drill a Bobby Hoffman creation? It certainly was ... introduced in his second year with Sky ... 1972 ... very creative mind ... and believe it ot not, Hy charted out the original brass jam, complete with sirens, contras sounding like trailer trucks and mellos keeping a timed note pattern that the rest of us keyed on to know where we were in the jam ... give it a listen sometime ... it's not the "free for all" most think it was ... :-)
  20. First Renegades rehearsal I met Donna and, well, as they say.... the rest is history! (in about 4 weeks we'll be married 44 years! ) Musta been sumptin in the water back then ... Sharon and I will hit 43 yrs in Oct ... we met in HS and marched together in the Bpt PAL ... cruise is booked already ... @ 45 we'll hit the beaches of Hawaii again! :-)
  21. Judges don't judge on what is cool unless the Skyliners are returning to their "traffic jam" routines of the days of Dreitzer and Perriloux. Actually, it was Dreitzer and Myers during the Traffic Jam years ... and it's spelled Perrilloux ... double R ... double L ... just like the Long Roll ... :-)
  22. Loretto - 1962 Best 24 man (and I do mean man) hornline I ever heard ... toppled all the giants of that era ... Genero, Cluna and Freising at the instructional helm ... Tom Costa and Sal Calvagno leading the admin ... lotsa vowels in that corps ... :-)
  23. Once again, as we approach Memorial Day, I would like to send out a solemn Thank You to all those who served in the Armed Forces to protect my freedom ... especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice. I cannot begin to describe the profound effect interacting with the WWII and Korean vets at the Harry Condon AL Post #11, Bridgeport CT, had on me as a youth ... and then my later interaction with the Garbarina-Mazarakos AL Post #1523 NYC and their drum corps, the NY Skyliners ... I will once again be donning my red polo shirt and black baseball cap along with my white Keds sneakers (posing as white bucks) to play "air horn" along with the Skyliners Alumni faithful ... two parades ... a small price to pay for freedom ... Think about hooking up with your group to either march along, or simply lend a hand ... I've been drummer, DM, Rifle Bearer, Sabre Guy, air horn player and Water Boy through the years ... just to be there in the line of march gives me purpose ... and peace ... If you're a horn player, think about participating in the Taps playing by Buglers Across America ... maybe Dorritie can provide the details ... or maybe you can provide the service to you local town's Memorial Ceremony ... or maybe you can just play it in your backyard ... I guarantee you, your adult beverage and family picnic later on will be that much more meaningful ... Thanks for listening ... now go do something on Monday ... Andy
