  1. My personal vote for Sr. Corps of the 60's would have gone to the Reading Buccaneers: 1960 VFW National Champs 1961 VFW National Champs 1962 VFW National Champs 1963 2nd Place World Open 1964 5th Place World Open 1965 DCA Champions 1966 3rd Place DCA 1967 3rd Place DCA 1968 DCA Champions 1969 3rd Place DCA Andy
  2. ... if that was the case, the title would have read: OLD mini-corpster ... LOL ... Andy "let's here for the Little People" Lisko
  3. ... actually, Kennedy stadium was brand spankin' new in 1965 ... I ought to know - I went to HS (Central) there when it opened ... the 64 show was held at Hedges Stadium, on the other side of Bridgeport (Harding HS) ... the Bridgeport area was quite a mecca for big shows in the 60's ... Barnum (every year); WO 64,65; DCA 65,66,67 ... in 2004 Kennedy recieved a huge overhaul (lights, rest rooms, track, artificial grass, seats, etc.) and is quite a nice venue for the Barnum once again ... Andy
  4. Jim can give a difinitive answer, but, if I had to guess, the WDCHOF pays for the inductees plaque, bb cap, shirt?, dinner and room for the induction ceremony hel on DCA weekend ... not sure if tix to any of the shows are also funded ... there are usually 5-7 inductees so it could get a little costly ... Andy
  5. Moe was in the Hurs in 61 and started snapping shots of them and other corps at shows ... the pics became a big hit and in 62 he stopped marching and began traveling to shows anywhere he could in CT/MA/NY/NJ taking picures ... none of the royalty constraints that exist now ... everyone was just glad to see him ... BTW ... is Stetson D. Richmond in anyone's HOF? ... Andy
  6. Timmy ... you never cease to amaze me with the accuracy of your statements ... true, Moe couldn't buy anyone a beer with the $$ he earned over the years ... hell he could barely afford toll money and more than once slept in his van when covering "double" shows on a weekend ... AND THOSE BELL BOTTOM JEANS ... YIKES! ... they stand at attention by themselves ... LOL ... just kidding ... take it from one who has visited Moe's version of Norman Bates' mansion on more than one occasion to dig out some old PAL and Skyliner photos ... he was an absolute master at his craft ... he and Bob Hunter definitely added visual intrigue into reading DCN ... I also agree on digitizing his collection (and trust me - I've seen his master load) ... I talked to him a long time ago about it and he was very reluctant to do so ... maybe you could prod him into it before the negatives evaporate ... LOL ... Andy "VOTE FOR MOE!" Lisko
  7. Jim ... was Moe ever nominated? How many years is the nomination active until it goes to the special committee for consideration? Thanks, Andy

  9. To your first point: drum corps was a twelve-month activity in the 60's ... winter time was for I&E, Color Guard and Standstill shows ... it was a great period in dc history To your second point: Fleetwood recorded who they thought would sell records ... Stetson D. Richmond, on the other hand, recorded everyone at as many shows as he could physically show up at ... two different philosophies ... and many times they were at the same shows ... he was the Moe Knox of vinyl ... LOL ... Andy
  10. And what horses they were! Joe DeFiglia, Timmy Rennie, Mario, Sol Antthony from Loretto - the Sasso bros, Eddie Lawrence, Paul Humphries, Billy Hightower from St. Catherine's - Frank Buscemi, Ruben Jackson, Billy Kirk, Felton Owens and a slew of others from Selden. Andy "I though the record scratches and pops were part of the show" Lisko
  11. I can't take all the credit Elphie ... I just pulled the major scores off of CORPSREPS.COM and sprinkled in a few more from my personal archives ... Interestingly, they show that St. Kevin's was always able to maintain a scoring margin over St. Catherine's, Loretto, Selden through 62 ... I can't find evidence of them ever beating Kevin's ... :-)
  12. Pepe's sense of timimg was impeccable! ... At a show in 79 when he was with the Hurcs, we (Sky) lost to Sun by 0.2 the week before the DCA ... Pepe comes out of the Judges Meeting, sees that we're a tad discontent, and starts looking on the ground like he lost a contact lens ... imagine his graveley voice start boomimg out "Two tenths ... two tenths ... anybody seen the two tenths I lost?" ... LOL ... Funnier story about Pepe in 63 ... he was undefeated on soprano that year at I&E shows and was wearing a big star around his neck all weekend ... after Riggie Laus beat him, he still wore the star but, one of the points was broken off! ... ya hadda luv it! Andy "rememberin' Pepe" Lisko
  13. Fish66 can answer this more accurately but, the Hurc snares through those years I remember are Ray Luedee, John Bodnar, Bob Morvak, Jimmy Donnelly, Ken Convertito, Tom Gabianelli, Benji Struski, John Moynehan, Vic Kulinski ... Andy
  14. Here's some comparative scores from the late 50's and early 60's: 1957 AL Nationals - Prelims 10 Saint Kevin's Emerald Knights 81.610 11 St. Catherine's Queensmen 81.480 12 Woodsiders 80.750 13 Selden Cadets 80.170 14 Our Lady Loretto Knights 79.860 1959 Dream DIVISION Junior 1 Saint Kevin's Emerald Knights 85.850 2 Selden Cadets 83.300 3 Audubon Bon Bons 81.950 4 Paterson Cadets 78.100 1960 Dream DIVISION Junior 1 St. Kevin's Emerald Knights 85.500 2 Our Lady of Loretto 82.300 3 Selden Cadets 80.900 4 Audubon Bon Bons 80.600 5 St. Mary's Cardinals 79.700 1961 Dream DIVISION Junior 1 St. Kevin's Emerald Knights 86.400 2 Our Lady of Loretto 84.500 3 Selden Cadets 83.650 4 Bracken Cavaliers 82.100 5 Audubon Bon Bons 80.425 1961 Garfield Show 1 St. Kevin's Emerald Knights 84.35 2 Blessed Sacrament 84.05 3 St. Catherine's Queensmen 79.95 4 Bracken Cavaliers 78.90 5 St. Raphael's Bucs 70.50 6 St. Patrick's Cadets 69.15 7 Dumont Police Cadets 63.05 1961 Eastern States Standstill Championship 1 Garfield Cadets 90.35 2 Blessed Sacrament 89.10 3 St. Kevin's Emerald Knights 88.95 4 St. Catherine's Queensmen 87.40 5 Cambridge Caballeros 86.40 6 I.C. Reveries 86.75 7 Selden Cadets 85.00 8 St. Raphael's Bucs 81.85 Andy
  15. Now, now Jim ... calm down ... Garfield was good in 65 but I think they got thumped handily by the Royal Airs at the 65 AL in Portland ... St. Pat's was always a pretty neat corps though ... between them, St. Raphael's, Bpt PAL, Vasella, Selden, Bracken and a few others, the "second tier" of the eastern corps was always interesting ... one by one though, the "guns" fell from time to time ... LOL ... Hope all is well with you ... Andy "rememberin' a good time in the 60's" Lisko
  16. Mitch won the VFW title in 60-61-62 when he played with the Cavaliers ... Gary Pagnozzi won the VFW title in 64-65-66 when he was with the Bpt PAL ... it would have been the battle of the titans if they would have ever met in competition ... Billy Cobham was a great friend of the PAL when he was in the Sunrisers ... wrote several charts for us in 67 and I had the pleasure of working with him through his interpretations ... he was still a music student at the time but, you could tell he was reaching for sounds far beyond drum corps of that era ... Any takers on the rst of the names? Yes, Bodnar was with the Hurcs ... started in St. Ann's and then went to the CT Royal Lancers ... Jim Dugan was also with the Hurcs and the CT Yankees ... Any takers on the rest of the names? (Not you Ace ... you know them all ... LOL) Andy
  17. Here's some more of my favorite snares through the years: Gary Pagnozzi Jim Hurley Jim O'Hara Joe Gannon John Bodnar Jimmy Donnelly Mitch Markovitch Al Merritt Jimmy Dugan Tommy Mannion Billy Nichols Rich Nardelli ... see if you can guees the corps they played with ... Andy
  18. If you liked their 65 show, try listening to their 64 rep ... their best year IMO ... no connection between Sky and St. Kevin's except in entertainment value and fan apprectation ... the fullness and excitement of what both corps attempted musically was the key ... Andy
  19. ... okay ... from Sky sops through the years to a Sky snare lineup: Wes Myers Little Joe Candelaria Donny Quinn John Mazarokas Bill Boerner John "Shirley Temple" Neurhor Fast Frankie Nash Bobby Hamilton Ray Priester Joe Fontana John Killela Robert "Jomba" O'Conner Jack Murray Kevin Murphy Keith Warfield Ricky Vale Steve Scorsone Matt Dennison John Bailey Eddie Dioguardi Bernie Weeks Jack Day Henry Gumbus Javier Morales Kyle Murphy ... and many more Andy
  20. HAHA ... now if I only knew who Ken Burns is! ... LOL ... Andy "I only know what I know" Lisko
  21. 1963 ... a pinnacle year in the history of drum corps ... the dawning of the age for many mid-tier corps and the last year of the "big guns" being dominent the entire year over the those knocking on the door ... the year of many "circuit" champions: Garden State: Little Falls Cadets; GNYC: Dumont Police Cadets; Penn-Jersey: St. Lucy's; Yankee Circuit: St. Rocco's; CYO Hub: St. Kevin's ... and Nationals - VFW: Chicago Cavaliers; AL, WO, Dream: Blessed Sacrament (incidentaly, I think 1963 was the only time in the 60's that BS and Chicago did not meet in a National competition) ... Seniors: Northeast Circuit: Hurricanes; AL, Dream: Hawthorne; WO: Skyliners ... and then those corps who failed to make the field in 63: Loretto, Cambridge Caballeros, St. Catherine's among the notables ... Andy "rememberin' 63" Lisko
  22. HAHA ... besides Moe's great serious pictures of many fine corps, he also had a knack of catching the most embarrassing moments on the field ... my two favorite shots in this case have to be pics that were featured in almost every issue of DCN in various ads in the mid-60's: 1) Peggy Stirk, Bpt PAL Color Guard Captain standing at attention with pertfect sabre postion - unfortunately her shako (one of the extra tall ones) had slipped down over her head onto her shoulders ... she had to be led off the field by the rifles; 2) the infamous shot of the kid from the Smithtown Freelancers whose pants had come undone in the exit - horn in one hand and holding up his pants with the other while in full stride! Andy "I was at both shows when it happened" Lisko
  23. In the sop line: Johnny Guarino Joe DeFiglia Tommy Swan Tommy Martin Gus Wilke Johnny Grass Jimmy Ednie Kenton Clarke Wilton Ramos Frankie "The Geek" Joe Chizek Marty Angiulli Phil "Junior" Lorini Jack Papa Joe Arioso Dom DiQuatro John DiQuatro Pee Wee Todaro JoJo Todaro Harry Hazelwood Timmy Reney Johnny Grass Jimmy Maldonado George "Sidemouth" Richardson John Girardi Dom Livoti Manny Solart Bill Hayes Goerge Rodriguez Aaron "Red" Van Duyne Billy "Dover" Seiglen Butch Anderson Donato Glussi John "Bush" Leonhart ... all with the NY Slyliners in the 50's 60's 70's or 80's Andy
  24. Earl taught both the CT Yankees and Hurricanes in the 50's and early 60's ... Arsenault had no ties to the Hurcs and left the Yankees for the Skokie Indians of Chicagoland ... Don Freising took over the Hurcs in 62 or 63 (maybe even earlier) and then Ray Luedee in late 65 into 66 ... Andy
  25. Not sure ... he was a straight bass player ... not a rudi ... have to ask Chuck next time I see him ... Jim Carter doesn't ring a bell ... Andy
