All drum corps are like families for sure. But some are run like programs, and a small handfull, like 27, were literally run like a family. That house on Cambridge street had to be the most unique thing I ever experianced in my life. EVERYTHING came out of there. Up until 1979, you even got your uniforms there! And after all the 19 years of marching and the 20 years after folding, both George and Patsy could still tell you at least one thing about every kid who was ever apart of the 27th Lancers. Cops coming to the door with kids who needed to get off the streets, making uniforms, cooking the meals, making the flags, changing the flags. Anything else? Certainly! Anything I have missed, she did! And when my wife and I met up with the B's in Denver for the 2004 finals, Patsy had the best advice, as always, when I asked where we should drive to get up into the Rockies. "Estes Pahk" she said twice, patting her hand on mine. My wife and I went through Estes Park and drove through Gods wonderland! To borrow a phrase I have heard recently, "Earth is poorer and Heaven is richer!" Thank you Ma!

If everything had a microphone, I am curious if all of the speakers could be set up along the backline before a corps time was up. Eventually, you would need as many trucks as Pink Floyd used in their heyday.

The "Amen" thing was a different creature. No amps were involved and it was at the end of a gospel type tune. Totally cool with everyone but the judges who hit them with penalties. Talking and breaking the stride of the music is the problem here. Yes Bluecoats never let the pace get broken with their narration, but there have been posts saying that many thought it silly and not needed.

Thats when you know you're doing the French Mistake! :o

1, 2, 3.........BUMP!

Steph and I sure rember that as well! But we also noticed that the front section that you were staying in seemed more more acceptable than the building in back. The forgotten zone. I was working in a restaurant in my youger days during the 4 years I lived in Hollywood, CA. Some customer kept getting up every few minutes to look out the front door. On the fifth or sixth time he stuck his head out, cops jumped out and grabbed his neck and through him to the ground. Seems he just shot someone down the street. Just another tricky day in L.A. :sshh:

Well, lets recap that first night in Denver. First, we were booked into a non smoking room, but it became quite apparent that it was not always that way. It smelled like a cigerette butt and the walls were permanenty yellow stained. There were cigerette burns all over the place. For all we know, this room may have acheived it's non smoking status just 3 minutes before we got there. The mattress was shaped like a bowl. Cobwebs in the corners. Tar drippings on the windows, broken toilet seat and I discovered that the smoke dectectors did not work. Unfortunatly, due to the late hour, we had to stay there for one night before we moved across to the highway and the Motel 6. As far as Motel 6's were concerned this one was OK. Certainly looked like the Waldorf Astoria when we first walked in from our nightmare the previous night. Did I forget to mention that the desk people at the Howard Johnsons that following morning were the worst bunch of people ever to run a motel? A whole room of angry customers, they obviously are used to this and make their money one night stayer at a time. They refused to even talk about getting our money back, but we accomplished just that through a tough battle with the corporate offices when we got home. We also called the Denver Fire Department on the smoke detectors. they called my wife and investigated the place and we were told that they would have smoke detectors installed. At least we got our money back and accomplished possibly saving someones life if a fire ever broke out. A picture of the lovely sleeping arrangement..

While we are at it, lets look ahead to Indianapolis in 2008. Who knows about the hotels around the RCA Dome - soon to be - Lucas Oil Stadium? I know nothing of this town.

In the 80's, I could count on Motel 6 being a good deal. But after me and my wifes overnighter to the Murfreesboro show, I will never stay at one again. Not just because of one night, but a few bad experiances in the last few years. Accor has ruined it. So the question goes out to those who travel much. I know there is no perfect chain, but which one has become most consistant without robbing your wallet? After all, you are not there to stay in your room, but you do have to sleep in it.

Both my years of marching ended at Casa Bonita. And when all the corps were there at the same time, it was like waiting for Space Mountain when it was brand new. Eating there was like a weird dream. Raise the flag for a refill!

About the "Pressure" thing..they need to say it angrier. You can find the video on youtube I'm sure. It's how BJ does it in his song. When this song was a hit, it jumped out of the radio and stabbed you in the chest with it's staccato. I just find the Cavies version a little rounded which takes the sting off the song. Maybe I could be a "narration tech". Hey I just created a new job position. b**bs J/k

We all know only one of 3 corps can win DCI championships and this year it's Blue Devils turn. Especially, since finals are in California. :P That's my bold prediction. Only 3 corps have been winning titles since 1992, and that's with the exception of Phantom's tying title and Vanguard has one.

I think that the quote "Reason #265 why "The" Magic is no longer around. . . . ." is in reguard to the rather nasty comment aimed at my wife by magicdirect. Yet reason #265 has been requested to be removed while the shot at my wife remains. It is not a matter of PM's because my wife does not even personally know this person who attacked her from out of nowhere. Your rules are very strange. <**>

I think it depends on what you're looking for in a website. The poster who said that you have to set goals is correct. My wife (Lancerlady) and I designed the "Official 27th Lancers" website from scratch 27thLancers which is hard to do and not so hard to do. We wanted to find all the right colors that represented the corps. And finding the tartan was a bonus. The technical aspect we run also with help from my brother who is technical savvy and he trains us, but we both have technical skills. So I guess it just depends on if you can find someone in the organization that has the skills you need without having to hire a firm to do it. You can go that route too. That would be one way to do it without it being as expensive as hiring a firm to do it. The database depends...most do include alumni information privately or publicly. It takes a business sense and a technical sense to be able to do it yourself. As well as a lot of patience. Yes DCI Addict made some very excellent points. You have to remember it is always a work in progress.

It'd be better then the Bjork show..and he'd be guaranteed standing ovations in Georgia! B) :P

This post by Texas Mom is about as great as it gets. It's one of those "You know it's a home run the moment it touched the bat" kind of things. How obtuse do these people think we all can be? When there is a different director every year, but basically the same board, is it really that hard to solve the puzzle? Do they really think that some of us have no "insider" connections to the activity and occasionally get a whiff of an ill wind?

Well we take our newborn to Church and he is very well behaved, as a matter of fact he is basically a quiet baby so I don't have any concerns about him. I'm with you on the disruptive high school kids though..we experienced that at the Kennesaw show year before last. God, it was so bad I thought my wife was going to get security to ask them to ask those kids to leave. But they were being ridiculous and very rude, intentionally. I don't understand why folks pay that good money to come and talk during the shows..If you want to talk, stay home.

I think I had 3 nicknames with 27. "Rahjah Dahdjah" which all Rogers get called either with or without the accent. Vinnie "Fred Flintstone" LaFrazier (SP?) would call me "Captain Nemo" for all the d##n subs I ate at the Revere House of Grease. And Opie would call me "Californyah", which is funny since he ended up being a Blue Devil instructor a few years later. selected memories of Hymie 1978 1. Waking up the corps one morning by turning up the volume on the orange juice sketch off of the National Lampoon's "Thats not funny, thats sick" tape. One very negative reaction. 2. Singing "Riot in cell block #9". Backup vocals provided by anyone wishing to join in. 3. Providing the corps with a mantra that was quite befitting the non themed show that year. "My name is Elmer J. Fudd, millionare! I own a mansion and a yacht! AGAIN! - My name is Elmer J. Fudd, millionare! I own a mansion and a yacht! AGAIN!" This was repeated until you saw God and fell down dizzy. George Z picked up on this and had a very large section of Lancers including my self, shouting this at the top of our lungs outside of Mile High stadium on finals night, just before lining up to jump from 9th to 7th place. It works I tell you! It works!

As Lancerlegend pointed out, it was started in 1977, and we were doing it in 78 despite his being aged out the year before. I finally had to ask what it was about, and someone told me something along the lines that it was a part of the show that he made memorable in rehearsals in his own special way! As far as "awful" is concerned, I remember a mid season tenor who got an attitude adjustment in 78 that I will not repeat here, other than to say that it was "fragrant" at the very least. Also, there was a lot of murmering that season about something that happened to a member of the color guard on the 04. I never found out exactly what the deed was. Perhaps it is better that way.

And despite Porky's Close Encounters solo, Opie still had to stretch out the breaks in between the numbers. It's a good thing the audience filled the gaps in with applause rather than hearing the sound of crickets!

Yes, my wife marched that year and when I hear that drum line I am in awe of them. Ludwig..awesome.. I also like Bridgemen's 1980 and 1983 drum solo. :) 1989 Phantom's drum solo 1977 27th Lancers drum solo (I always dug that one).
