The original post was made by someone who is still in high school. I hope his/her lips aren't thinning away already! At my young age and this poster's young age, we don't need to be changing mouthpieces all the time. Find something that works and stick with it... and play tons of Kopprasch. One of the points in my original post is people often worry so much about their equipment when there are so many other things that could benefit from that mental energy. Then when you get old and things start going downhill, you can start doing whatever you want, even if it means playing on a triple horn... bearing in mind, everyone's retirement day comes... even Dale Clevenger. Don't know if you are still looking... I've played Conn 8D for 11+ years now... at first I was on a Holton MDC - it's a nice piece, but it was just something that I was started on as a standard... I switched to Schilke 30 about 4 years ago... and have been happy ever since. The makeup of the mouthpiece really doesn't matter that much... sure you don't want aluminum foil, but it is a pretty negligible difference honestly. I know people who use gold rims, but mostly because they are allergic to the silver plating on most mouthpieces. I never care to try to change up my equipment... buying a different horn or mouthpiece or mute or whatever isn't going to help my rhythm & articulation, or expand my knowledge of repertoire, and most likely won't contribute much to improve intonation, tone quality, etc... but practicing with a metronome and a drone certainly will! I'd say cut out some of the stress and save yourself some time by finding something you like and sticking with it. All best wishes! Kristen M.M. Music Ed Candidate - Boston U M.M. In October of 2002 I purchased the 1999 DCI Finals Legacy DVD and the 1994 DCI Finals Legacy DVD... if it makes a difference, 1999 is the first one I watched! Then that December I was at my first drum corps camp... more DVDs soon followed (1993, 1996, etc)... and the rest is history!

From the entire staff at 7th, 3rd and 10's comment does not represent the 7th organization. If it makes you feel better, Cadets 99 is the first Cadet show I ever saw and I really enjoyed it. Especially the City of Angels... with the little mello solo. And just to reply to the remark about BD getting some heat for mirrors this year: I think the BD concept with mirrors is brilliant. I haven't seen the show yet (Murfreesboro, are you here yet?!?!) but I'm looking forward to seeing how Scott Chandler has used the mirrors to his guard's advantage. He's such a genius when it comes to... everything artsy. haha On that note... Go Holy Name! Can't wait to see yall this friday!

can I defer to free 2011 tickets??? I'll be at a wedding on finals day! first finals week I'll miss in 7 or 8 years. =-(

actually, Red Phantom... you can hear "twinkle twinkle little star" in what a wonderful world... and that was more of the point than the fact that "world" was in the title... and I actually think that is kind of clever. but I can understand... I was so ###### when Phantom played "Spartacus" last year... how lame since that was also the title of their show... that obviously made it a poorly designed show and it was totally my hot dog corps...

I never said the intention of the thread was bullcrap. I never stated that people's opinions were bullcrap. I did agree with someone that the thread as a whole is crap. I said people should be more respectful (man, what a concept). How do you believe we should be? disrespectful? Furthermore, they can have their opinion about Jarrett, but repeatedly sarcastically jabbing at him in a public forum... how is that mature? And just to note... Crossmen did not (as you do not state, but imply) move to Texas for the purpose of "taking advantage of the great talent"... we moved there because it was our only option for survival. There are many members in the corps that do not come from Texas. I would say its possible we have even less members from Texas than say the Cavaliers or Bluecoats. We also have international members. Also, Revolution had struggles even before Crossmen arrived. Furthermore, if Rev makes the necessary moves, they still have their opportunity. In response to another poster - Crossmen don't have any more trouble filling out the corps than they have in the past and certainly don't have any more trouble than other viable corps normally would. WHOA! Stop the post... so the above was written after reading the first page of the thread, but now I have read through the whole thread. Mostly I'm just laughing at the insane thread! One thing I will say: As for the mentality of today's students... The 2004 Season: Students at shows (most even older than me as I was 16) asked me for autographs at shows. Friends in my band back home marveled that I was that dot on the field in the poster of the Finals Retreat hanging in our band hall. I could tell people that I marched Crossmen and they would totally flip out. After the 2005, 2006, & 2007 seasons: "Cool, where do you march?!? *cringe* Ooooooh, sorry you didn't make Phantom." (<--- True story) People (that don't know me) assume I am not good enough to go to a "top corps" simply because I marched a corps that didn't make finals. (i.e. the view that lowly citizens of DCI march corps that place low and should be looked down upon, made fun of, and harassed) After the 2008 season: Shopping at the mall (in Texas) and 2 teen employees (apparently drummers) find out I marched Crossmen (talking to my mom while I was in the dressing room). Both geeked out on me and one even "had to shake my hand" because he "had never met a Crossmen before." Tell me, is it merely a coincidence? How do people relate placement/competitive success to their view of a specific corps? Now, enough of drama. We just want to march our show and entertain you guys. Kudos to the many successes and milestones achieved by many corps in the 2008 season. The closet to me in terms of camps would be Spirit Boston Crusaders (florida camps) Southwind (if they come back) I'd really like to make finals though so I guess Boston it is, unless Spirit can get it together next year. They were very young this year so who knows."

Yeah, I was from a 4A school, but we still had 200-ish members. It wasn't the 360 members of Odessa Permian, but it was still a good number. And truth be told, we didn't get too much money from the school district. All that money was for the football players steak dinners before and after all their games. lol We probably saved a lot of money from not having all those props and electronics. Or maybe our band directors were just better at money management. I dunno. anyway.. CROSSMEN. Move-ins are this FRIDAY! May 23rd. My 4 years of TX High School band (2002-2006) I never payed a dime... wait no... I only payed for my uniform to get dry cleaned at the end of the year. And my high school was a State Finalist in 2001, and then Area 03, 05. We were entertaining as heck and never used props, electronics, etc. And we had screamers!! (2 of whom are now Grammy award winners). But we didn't have crazy $1000 band fees or whatever. I know of a few good places that don't cost anything really. I think Darren Hazlett (Xmen Pit 92, Snare 93-98, tech 99, caption head 05, 06) brought SOME of that groove back. It wasn't the exact same, but every caption head is going to add a new element to style and etc.

ironic... I love the Scouts...too bad I had to leave the Rose Bowl right before the scouts showed up on Finals night or else I would have joined my friends visiting them... would've been waiting at the buses... there's some people I wanted to talk to. bummer maybe next summer. good luck Scouts. ps - scouts 99 pretty much rocks... bring that back
