  1. you mean there was a corps from Alaska not named the Blousemen?
  2. my only concern is with move ins being in the middle of May, it practically chases HS kids off
  3. right. if you're soley a drum set player, the symphony will ot have work for you every concert. see Mike...other music forms don't try to be everything for everyone...and guess what......they're successful!! It seems the more drum corps tries to be all things to all people...it gets less successful. gee, imagine that
  4. and if it fails...will they change or listen to the "experts" more? drum corps isnt your every day entertainment. it was never meant to be
  5. funny thing tho. I have been attending shows for my whole life. in between corps before preshows, i dont remember seeing fans zoning out waiting for the next corps to start up. in fact, it gaves fans a chance to talk about what they just saw. they didnt need fireworks for retreat, video ads, etc. sure some people got up for a bathroom or a drink. that happens now. this is just more of the continued dumbing down of America, and DCI has joined in. its really hard to talk to your neighbor while the latest DCI corporate partner ad blares over the jumbotron
  6. except if the kid is driven, they can master both...and...gasp...be educated about more than one instrument. imagine that, a kid learning about music. isn't that what DCI's supposed to be about?
  7. if the key change in brass instruments meant everyone sounded better, we'd be seeing everyone with 18's in brass. honestly...the numbers look the same. and yes i exaggerated by going back to pre pit days. but let's face it...you can't argue that when a change gets pushed thru, everyone does it because if not, you're perceived as behind the times. remember, some corps took very public stands against Bb brass and amps...and yet use it.
  8. which failed miserably last time it was tried
  9. a lot of kids do have the respect gang. sadly, too many of those teaching them don't
  10. to the best of my knoweldge, any "official" stuff goes back to 88 or 89
  11. well they may have to create moreeintermissions, because fans may need to get up, may not want to watch so and so etc. it's going to be a mess
  12. of course they have the "option" Mike. it's called perceptiuon which you seem to conveniently forget time and time again. to not have all the newest toys means you'renot with it, old fashioned, stuck in the mud. and if that fact were not true, people would still be marching keyboards and tympani, and half the corps wouldn't plug in. some may still be on G bugles. you can try to justify it any way you want, but deep down inside you know it's true. you've been around drum corps long enough
  13. well, we'll agree to disagree about the press coverage. and I have a hunch, when 2010 reps rolls out ( not just concepts) I bet we'll see more tired warhorses rolled out
  14. one show. wow. a trend! ( sarcasm off) and no offense John, that show got a lot of negative press too. to their credit tho, they actually lived up to the hype of the proposal. the guy proposing went to the same well for the 3rd time in 25 years
  15. increased variety. wait wasn't electronics supposed to bring that? lets look at 2009 reps shall we? App Spring West Side Story ( at least 3 shows had stuff from it) Happy Days are Here Again Caravan I Got Rhythm Concerto in F Promise of Living Somewhere Over the Rainbow Sansemaya Childrens Hour of Dream Bacchanale Joy Victory At Sea Malaga Dance Of vengeance from Medea the Kansas show ( not all of the tunes but many) Festive overture Not While I'm Around from Sweeney Todd Make Our Garden Grow from Candide Seasons of Love Nessum Dorma Nights in White Satin American Elegy Barber of Seville Heat of the Day To tame The Perilous Skies Simple Gifts Thunder and Blazes Hungarian Rhapsody Liturgical Dances Appalachian Morning( twice) Strike Up The Band the Pee Wee theme'In The Hall Of The Mountain King new York State of Mind Give My Regards to broadway 42nd street harlem nocturne sing sang sung NYNY White Shade of Pale Nights in White Satin (again) White rabbit William Tell Overture Carnival Of Animals Carmen Batman Superman so....where's all the creativity? how many of these songs have been done more than one or two times>? probably most of them. sorry your argument doesn't wash as proved by the reps list for 2009 from corpsreps.com
  16. I don't see it as him putting you down. I see it as he expressed his opinion in a direct manner. and trust me, Lance knows if I feel he goes too far
  17. so, do you then tell your local symphony they need The Stones every month because to not have them otherwise is not a good idea? you know full well if woodwinds get passed, everyone will use them because of the perception of what will happen if you don't. and to get woodwinds, you know membership size will grow yet again.
  18. drum corps WAS unique. it didnt plug in. it is still all brass for now. you can take the top BOA/TOD/USSBA band, put em next to a decent to great DCI corps, and the difference was astoundingly noticeable to anyone
  19. i see your point..but..why load up the 5 minutes before judging, when you set yourself up to end flat after you're into the real deal
