  1. Then there's the band directors explaining/analyzing every move for their minions while the 15 year-olds are still vizualizing Carmen and wishing the geek would shut up.
  2. To me the most annoying vocal was Bluecoats. While not as prevalent as BD, its just amping for the sake of amping. The real shame is that it precedes a super snare/tenor segment. The sense I got tonight was that people were still in the act of saying "that sucked" about the hip hop while the battery lick was starting.
  3. I thought it was appropriate to the shows. SCV and Madison got good responses. I prefer the q-finals crowd to finals, because you've got a smaller, but more hard core audience. Not as many band kids (and band directors) to trip over.
  4. OK, Key. Here's next years post-Soviet show idea. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/4129572.stm
  5. For some unknown and irrelevant reason Duke and I were talking about things to do in Newark (I was commuting there for a while) and he mentioned seeing him with the ____________ Symphony/Orchestra. Now I'm curious. I'll ask him on Friday.
  6. I may be mistaken but wasn't Bill Hayes the original soloist? I know they played it as early as 1960, but Cherry Pink was their "production number" before that and it was Bill's signature tune.
  7. I voted the Phantom scenario because someone on another thread said if they won, they'd play Wagner again next year. I think Southwind hitting 15th isn't a longshot unless they have another Allentown. I'd see Vanguard vaulting rather than inching. Looking at the numbers from last weekend, there were no "big" issues. It's a tenth here; 2 tenths there.
  8. I knew I'd bungle the name. It's the folks who play in the Newark Center for the Arts. Newark Symphony, NJ Concert Orchestra, Jimmy Hoffa Memorial Troubadors. It's not like there's an abundance of cultural venues in Newark Obviously he plays trumpet. Now don't get Carol mad at me, she was always good to my daughter when I played with Archie.
  9. Of course Duke also does Bb with the New Jersey Symphony.
  10. While I didn't exactly take the high road, my comments were another day at the office on DCP. It's inexcusable to attack someone's family. Actually Bourgeois little brats has sort of a Spiro Agnew ring to it and it felt good to type. My apologies to SW for leaving the avatar on during my personal rant, though.
  11. I had not signed before, mainly because I doubted its effectiveness. After seeing that trash, I have signed it. Hopefully the clowns will find that they're doing more harm than good to their "cause". The point I don't get is that the pro-anything-DCI-wants crowd favors themselves as more educated, sophisticated, and progressive than we street urchins who enjoy the activity as it is. I guess the bourgeois little brats are living a huge lie.
  12. Totally Agree. Performing before corps that you've beaten in every head-to-head meeting is absurd.
  13. Please, Mommy, please! If you let me have it I'll never ask you for another thing the rest of my life.
  14. I'd say personal preference is it. I've never been a big fan of the "Madison sound", but have always admired the "Madison attitude". For my tastes, the past couple of years have been about exorcising both. Again, IMHO, Carmen revives the Scouts' personality without the paint-pealing. Plus, I really like Carmen and there are so many creative licks in this show. (I could do with a little less siren - maybe cowbells (oh, that was another thread)).
  15. I wasn't there on Friday so I'll abstain from the voting, but I do know that it was a very experienced panel who all have a history of high integrity. (besides, I'm too lazy to change my signature block).
  16. Partly true. I did see Spirit, Glassmen and Magic early in Orlando and Crossmen at their concert (which is a poor comparison, I know). So while I've seen all of the corps you mentioned (except for the Colts) I only had single data points on some. Hope that's sufficient truth in advertising.
  17. It struck me odd that Wagner was saying that the real redemption for his idiom (opera) was to make it so unappealing that no one would want to perform or hear it. There are a few folks who think our idiom (drum corps) is currently in the same mode.
  18. Yes, but Wagner would only wear silk, I've seen George in much coarser material. ^0^
  19. I didn't see those shows this weekend for various reasons, but I'd assume they have all improved over the season. I can say that Glassmen came out in mid-season form and might have peaked too soon. I was looking at the recaps and they seem to be hurting in brass captions. That's where they were strongest early on, so I'm assuming that their score is pretty much maxed out (not saying I agree with that just that it's the only logical explanation for their treading water).
  20. I didn't know Martin Luther wrote Bohemian Rhapsody, although he was said to have a fun side at times. B)
  21. Actually, I liked the 1962 show at championships in Minneapolis. Don't have a DVD, but I do have the Fleetwood record. I guess my REAL favorite show should by the 1967 show in the West Point uniforms. They were re-building and our lowly Miami Vanguards beat them. 1975 was cool, but I thought Vanguard had closed the gap at finals.............. But even without a BeeGee's tune, Carmen still does it for me.
