  1. You should listen to Cory on the Finale (it's in the side tab as an option)...ridiculous.
  2. Crossmen Announce their 2011 production: RENEWAL http://www.crossmen.org/crossmen-2011-production
  3. Hello All. I have been 'researching' this topic for a couple months...for a class. My problem isn't finding information. It is finding NEW information...or, even just finding new ways to compare things during the period, because it seems that every trumpet player with a degree on the planet uses this period for a dissertation topic. It's understandable, since this period represents a rare period in history where composers actually like the sound of the trumpet for more than just 'bringing the heat.' Even more challenging, I've been given the period between 1650-1700... If any of you fine people might have any advice as to something 'new' or 'interesting' that was happening between trumpet and vocal music during this period, I'm all ears! If not, thanks for reading!

  5. If you can figure out a way to get it out there (legally, or otherwise:-), I'd happily pay you for this app! Your work deserves recognition.
  6. What's the difference between this app and something like the Sportacular App which also reports scores from sporting events... Do the have special permissions from MLB, NFL, NHL, NBA, NCAA, etc... to report scores? Or, is that not the issue here?
  7. How is the app coming? It's been a while, since I've seen anything...
  8. I haven't really thought about shows that I'd RATHER listen to, but here are some shows that have made their way onto the iphone... Madison 95, 96 BD 98 Cadets 98 Cadets 00 Crossmen 02 :-) Phantom 03 BD 04
  9. I always thought the 'lump' was the heart (since it was red) with the darkness closing in around it...and, the member that danced out was the 'defiant' one. anyway, that is one of my most favorite, simple, powerful moments too...in those terms.
  10. Tonal Harmony This is a very practical book that is used successfully by high schools and colleges around the country...
  11. So, we return to the original question: Would Open Class corps membership benefit from a tour that ended a earlier in the summer?
  12. This sounds EXACTLY like a town that I was from...Are we possibly talking about the same place?
  13. Where I used to live some of the circuits are very strong, so the director's don't want to lose a minute with their kids...I don't think they are thinking about gaining student's with drum corps experience; it's more like they are worried about losing their best student leaders for a majority of summer camp. It's hard to teach from scratch without models... Where I live now many of the directors aren't really that into the whole marching band/drum corps thing. It has only been a recent development for some of the area schools to get involved in the marching scene, and those director's are serious. There are no local circuits, so they travel hundred's of miles to 3-4 BOA events in a season, and many of them wouldn't give up a second without a fight considering all the money that the parent's pour into their programs. Plus, these programs have qualified staff, so they feel like their student's are already getting a good marching experience.
  14. I think that it is ego more than clueless-ness...They feel like their kids are getting a better education in their program than they would in an Open Class Corps. I suppose some of them are right; some of the higher caliber band programs in the country could certainly make a strong case... I just wonder if that would change any if Open Class Finals happened earlier in the summer.
  15. It's a technicality for most. Around here, Freshman Year they have options, but by their Sophomore year they have to be in Marching Band if they want to continue to participate in the entire program. To participate in marching band, means having to be at summer camp. Summer Band Camp = No Drum Corps. Sad, but true.
  16. This could likely go on either this or the Open Class Forum, but I wanted to start here: I know that many high school band director's do not allow their student's to consider drum corps until they are seniors (if at all). 3 Questions: 1. Is it possible that this is hurting membership numbers of many Open Class Corps? 2. If so, do you think Open Class Authorities would consider breaking away from Open Class a bit by holding an end of July Championship event, which would coincide with the beginning of many summer band camps rather than compete. 3. What would be other benefits/drawbacks of moving away from Open Class. (Try to Avoid Cpt. Obvious statements, please:-) ...
  17. I think DCI could stand to have more exposure, but it has proven to be equally tough to run and fund a World Class Tour. As a long time fan and performer, I love seeing great performances. However, had there mot been a drum corps in my town when I was a kid (now folded), I would have never marched, and who knows how long it would have taken for me to be exposed to drum corps. Now I live in the midwest, and I constantly come into contact with people (all ages) who have never heard of drum corps let alone DCI or it's divisions. I'd say, as with most things, there has to be a balance...In this case a regional balance would be great. (Like football) The teams are far enough apart, so they don't compete with each other for media attention, fans, or money, but they are still close enough to drive to and check out. In the end, I do know about drum corps, so I vote for QUALITY!
  18. Change always seems to bring controversy... Here is a twist in perspective that I have been curious to read about: How far back would you go through all of the evolutions of drum corps (member or fan). What do you call the "good old days"? It would be especially interesting to know how old each poster is... I marched in the 90's and 00's, but I wouldn't have minded being an 80's baby. I don't think I could handle going back much further. See, it's EASY... Good Luck!
  19. I was just curious, because to buy individual corps VPD's for the "Legacy" year's is quite a chunk more expensive than buying the actual Legacy DVD's. (ex...6 VPD = $36, while a Legacy DVD (Full Finals) is $39) I like the idea of getting to choose your favorite shows from each season (like itunes) and supporting the corps (although only the top 6), but the price point seems illogical to me. Random thought, is DCI working to put all VPD's for every corps from every year? If all the funds go back to the corps, then right now only the top 6 (a fairly standard group of corps) is benefiting... Just wondering if there was a logical reason.
  20. Does anyone know why the pre-2000 VPD's cost as much as the 2000's, or if it will change to match the price point of the Legacy years any time soon?
