Cymbal sizes

OK, so there's a discussion of cymbal lines on the DCA forum and it got me wondering about cymbal sizes. What size plates do y'all wield on the field of batt...er, competition? Are ya using thin, medium, thick...what?

I'm a fan of deeper cymbal sounds, so I'm thinking medium thin--though I'm uncertain as to what's available for marching use these days.

TAFL, ever curious

I recommend a mix of 18's and 20's or all 20's. I'd go with medium to heavy weight, just because the thin ones will be more prone to inverting and cracking. Check out Zildjian Z-MACs--great sound. Stay away from the "Stadium" cymbals--they're so heavy and curved that it's almost impossible to get a good quality crash out of them.

The Kilties use 16, 18, 20, 28 and 32. Utilizing split/individual parts many times for different effect and tone.

28 and 32 inch crash cymbals? I'm not sure they would sound that great, even if you could lug them around the field all summer. 16 sounds pretty small, but might provide a nice higher pitched voice.

I would say 18 and 20s if you have ride passages. I would experiement with bigger/smaller if I was crashing, but only 16s and 22s.
