GregGilman
Hehe...interesting thread. 1988 San Jose Raiders.... that was ME dragging that white floor on to the court! I'll never forget the oooohs and aaaaaahs, especially at the Boston regional (they freaked). Note: We used a much heavier material than modern floors, what a pain to move around and clean. It also held "creases" so I had to kneel next to the court during the show, ready to pull the floor taunt if it got too "wrinkly". I didn't know anyone else had done a floor before 1988. It was drill designer Jay Murphy that brought the idea to the Raiders. See you on the floor. - Greg
marsh1109
I was a rifle in the 1984 show with Conquest. All that make-up was killer.
byline
In a way, I'm kind of surprised that the idea for the white geomotric mats Blue Devils used in 1990's "Tommy" never took off. When I saw that, I figured they would be the next big fad. But I'm really not surprised. I'll bet they were a bear to march on, always the danger of catching an edge or tripping on a ripple in the fabric. But they were distinctive, and gave the marching field a completely different look . . . in much the same way floor coverings erased the gymnasium floor for winter guard. Yes Sue, I wondered the same thing. I too thought after seeing BD using those white pieces that would be the next "thing" for drum corps. Who knows, maybe we'll see it in the future. However, I have seen some marching bands in the USSBA circuit and in other local shows using that idea.
Malibu
OK, this is the response I got back from WGI; Erte used a smaller sized floor in 85' at the end of their show , Pride of Cincinnati used a full size black tarp for part of their show in 86'- they did a Star Trek show and used it during the "black hole" section. And the San Jose Raiders were the first to use one during the entire show in 1988.. Hope this helps :)
Malibu
Then Erte was the first to use one! To me it doesn't matter "how big" or for "how long." The idea was THERE, and that's what I was getting at. B)
