Fever Licensing Issue?

Recommended Posts

i dunno who's at fault, but what makes me think some of it may be DCI's is that they did not provide us a housing site for finals week.

how could DCI not give a CA corps a housing site when champs are IN CA????

anyways, i hope all this gets resolved soon. i would really like to see us on DVD

Just want to make sure I have this straight:

DCI didn't get Fever a housing site for finals week in California

Therefore

DCI is at fault for not including Fever on the DVDs

And the resulting cover-up is labeled a "licensing issue" by DCI.

Got it!

Who needs television writers? That's a GREAT story!

woah man, i said that gives me a reason to think maybe it'd be their fault.

i didn't say it is. i don't know if it was management or dci's fault.

there's no need to ridicule me for pointing out that dci has faults.

jeez

chill

Fever's management is being awfully quiet here. Their silence speaks volumes about who is responsible.

What are they supposed to do?

Just because nothing has been posted on DCP doesn't mean nothing has happened.

Oh and about the other part:

I think it's pretty ridiculous that they had no housing site for Finals and had to practice all week in a parking lot, but I'm 99.9% sure that it was in no way related to the licensing issues on the DVD.

Music licensing has always been a difficult area for corps to deal with. For the pre-DCI and early DCI years, they often dealt with it by ignoring it.

Can't do that anymore.

It is surprising that this particular problem exists. DCI has an ongoing business relationship with a music licensing specialist to work on behalf of the corps in obtaining all of the various rights that a corps might need. That would include the right to arrange, the right to perform live, the mechanical rights (audio) and the video synch rights (for the DVD's).

Some composers or music publishers (or other rights holders) are more difficult to work with than others. However, it usually works out in the end because the person working on DCI's behalf stays after this stuff year round.

It has been my observation over the years, that if there is a problem in this area it has often been a given corps who has not followed the proper procedures.

(However, I have to admit that I have no idea what happened in this case.)

If I was a kid who marched in Fever last Summer I would be livid.

Still no explanation from Fever's management. Have they communicated with the membership?

This is supposed to be different people that almost forced the corps off the road in the middle of 05, right?

I would not be so quick to point fingers on the licensing issue.

Due to a music publisher being slow in their response time, some DCI corps synch licenses for the DVDs may not be acquired until late in the season, or even after the season is over. You can't put every corps on hold or force corps to change their shows at the last minute just because they have not heard back from a publisher yet.

This could be the fault of no one, other than a selfish music publisher who decided to play hardball with a nonprofit activity.

While it is possible, and I truly hope thats the answer, I am skeptical with who the music was by. Sauce and Hazo are pretty standard drum corps and marching band things.

I say, blame it on the third valve. While corps still used 2V G bugles they weren't

considered "legitimate horns" and could slide under the radar. The third valve changed all that.

I wonder if the alumni corps at DCI (Royal Airs, MSARP and KAC) have had to license their music since they weren't included in the DVD's. Did MSARP have to do it for their own DVD production?

Did DCI have to go back and get releases for the Legacy DVD's? Or did the non-legitimate brass rule work in their favor?

Are you sure about that, Garry? i seem to recall being told by DCI that I had to get permissions when i was running Nightfire for both the 94 season (which never fielded) and 96 (which did)....and we held no HOPE of ever getting on a recording. The only one I know of in existence is on a tape in my posession of teh very last show in Santa Barbara.
