Cadets 2008

"I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones."

- John Cage

Oh, give me a break!

As someone stated earlier, it's a matter of like and dislike, not fear. What an embellishment!

He's comparing the 2008 Cadets to the end of Apartheid in South Africa, or women voting, or something that is actually significant to the world.

I guess we won't be expecting any Leonard Bernstein soon.

And the Cadets were innovative before Hopkins birth from the virgin Mary?

They weren't doing a whole lot in the 70s. except "Amen"

cadets "waited for the rules to change?" really? the corps and its director patiently sat around until the rules changed in ways they wanted?

Exactly. I don't see that they did anything at all outside the rules. It takes agreement by a majority of the BOD to make something "legal". They waited until that hapened and then used those new elements.

The Cadets have been innovative in the past and I expect they will in the future but last year…oh wait, no real ballad, you could argue that was innovated but then you’d be ignoring the dark ages of drum corps before everyone felt they had to have a ballad

Actually, in the dark ages when I marched (used fire torches to see the field because it was too dark) most corps DID have a ballad, but it was normally the closer as they exited the field.

It also seems one of their biggest haters is out in full force as well.

Listening to Nitro as I type. It definitely has a Symphonic Movement feel to it at times. With what we know so far, this show is reminding me of 1997 quite a bit, and that makes me :tounge2: .

Gotta agree there...1997 is probably my favorite Cadet show ever.

Music of the Night (SCV 89) is still one of my favorite closers of all time. It's a shame nowadays with the necessity of high velocity drill and everything that more corps aren't closing shows with balls to the wall, baby-throwing, tear-inducing ballads anymore. Colts closed with a ballad-esque song this year, and it was one of my favorite moments of 2007. I think more corps should follow this precedent.

Back in the day ALL corps ended their shows like that.

He's just quoting John Cage... Take your anger out on the music/film master...then talking about how Cadets are known for innovation. The rest you are imagining.

So many bitter people in here! It's disheartening sometimes. :-(

This is where you separate yourself from irrational inferences and pure statements. He did not compare the 2008 Cadets to the end of Apartheid in South Africa, or women voting, or something that is actually significant to the world. No where in that blog did he make such comments. For you to come up with such a conclusion is illogical.

I'm sure you know tons of other people who've given up their careers or directed education to teach drum corps. Some do become obsessed and it would seem that Drum Corps is significant, maybe not to your world, but certainly to some.

First corps to use Contrabasses on the field, the Peace Sign etc... There are definitely more examples out there.

So much self-aggrandizement. So much martyrdom. So much Hopkins.

Add another chair to the bitter table.

Yes, and they wore shorts in 1958 when Holy Name showed them the curb and kept the uniforms.

I also know who John Cage is, thanks.

"I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones."

implies that his excessive narration, and whatever bell-and-whistle he decides to pull out next year are the new ideas that the majority of us fear, that we don't somehow understand his genius. His product, design, and performance is so light-years beyond the runner-up that we "people are frightened" "I'm frightened of the old ones" implies that he is doing himself, his athletes of God, and the paying public a disservice if he doesn't push his corps to the absolute bounds of what is normal and accepted.

Why else would he cite that quote? What does he mean if I am so off?
