Paralda
Empire Statesmen won DCA sometime back in the 90s with matched grip, and they were extremely clean. But personally, I think it looks awkward compared to traditional grip.

Xsnaredrummer
Do you guys think a matched grip snare line will get a fair shake by the judges now? In DCI? DCA?

Piper
Here's my take on it. I was weened on trad grip and left handed to boot. I could single stick sixteenth notes on my left hand for two minutes at 132 BPM without even breaking a sweat. Then we got a new perc instructor who switched us over to match grip and man did I have to struggle with that. The muscles in my left wrist and arm just weren't conditioned for it. When we switched back to trad grip the following year I was the happiest snare drummer in the world. I've always felt that it was easier for a left handed person to learn trad grip because that's their "strong" arm whereas it's probably a bit more difficult for a right handed person and I salute them for it. I don't think that I could have played trad grip on my right hand.

pearlsnaredrummer77
Do you guys think a matched grip snare line will get a fair shake by the judges now? In DCI? DCA? I've basically lost interest in DCI-dislike the direction. I don't know what would happen there. I'm a strong DCA supporter, and feel like a matched snare line would get a fair shake from the judges. I think it would be interesting to see a good matched DCA line, although I do think traditional looks better.
pearlsnaredrummer77
I'm 99.9% sure Boston was using matched in the mid 80s. I would say that's pretty likely. When GBV did not field in 86 about 4 of our 8 snares (Missy Fend, Ray Dugan, Paul Devlin and Mike Andres) ended-up marching BAC and the grip might have been part of the attraction, it's been so long ago I can't remember. So I'll take the dates off Boston and just leave it as a name.
