Empire Statesmen 2009 Design Team

The 2009 design team is in place and already begun the creative process for the New Year. Many returning faces and a few new ones will join the Statesmen family for the 2009 season.

Introducing Empire’s Design Team for 2009!

Visual Designers / Rich Templin – Brett Templin – Terry Martin

Rich Templin has been involved in every aspect of the marching activity for over 40 years as a marching member, instructor, director, designer & administrator. He has had involvement with several Drum Corps including the New York Skyliners, Westshormen, Blue Coats and Hawthorne Caballeros. For the past 4 years Rich held the position of Judging Coordinator for DCA.

Brett Templin has also been very involved with High School programs as well as designing for Drum Corps & Indoor Percussion Ensembles. Brett has been involved with Mechanicsburg, Cumberland Valley & Lower Dauphin High Schools as well as the Blue Coats & Hawthorne Caballeros Drum Corps.

Terry Martin has been involved with High School Bands and Drum Corps as a Member, Drill Instructor, and Drill Writer since 1978. He started in Drum Corps as a Baritone player in 1978. He marched with the Harrisburg Westshoremen 1978-1983 and Hawthorne Caballeros 1984-1985. He became a Drill Instructor and Writer for the Harrisburg Westshoremen, Hawthorne Caballeros, and New York Skyliners and various Pennsylvania High School Bands from 1981 to present. He was also a Visual Judge for the Cavalcade of Bands, Keystone Indoor Drill Association and Tournament of Bands.

Brass Arranger / Jerry Kelsey

Jerry Kelsey has been the arranger\brass instructor for theEmpire Statesmen for 6 years including the past 3 seasons. His work has helped result in the Statesmen winning the high brass trophy the last 2 years. Mr. Kelsey is the current arranger\composer for Wake Forest University Jerry has been the brass arranger\instructor and consultant for many prominent drum and bugle corps. Including: Capital Regiment, the San Francisco Renegades, the Boston Crusaders, the Kilties, the Crossmen, Florida Wave and Suncoast Sound. Mr. Kelsey is a published arranger with Alfred Publications (formerly Warner Brothers) and recently was employed by Home Box Office. Mr. Kelsey holds a B.A. from Fredonia State University where he studied Composition with Dr. Walter S. Hartley and Conducting with Dr. Harry John Brown.

Percussion Arrangers / Joe Guadagnino & Ted Mascari

Joe Guadagnino has been involved in drum corps for most of his life. His family was part of the United Drum Corp Scene in Rochester, NY since the early 60’s. Joe started marching in the Cadets of Greece in 1971. Joe played snare, xylophone and spent his last season as drum major. Joe aged out in the snare line of the Crossmen. Joe started teaching right away. For over 16 years, Joe taught and wrote for many of the high school marching bands in NY State. Joe has taught most of the upstate NY drum corps as well as the Blue Coats, Crusaders and in 1997 started as Percussion Caption Head of the Empire Statesmen. Joe helped to arrange in 97, 98 and the 99 seasons. As well as being part of the percussion staffs since 1997, he has assumed the role of staff coordinator.

Ted Mascari has been involved in all aspects of percussion since 1980 as a performer, educator and arranger. He graduated from Cicero-North Syracuse High School in 1988 where he started his teaching career soon after graduating. Over the past 21 years, he has directed and arranged for several marching band and indoor percussion programs in NY, most recently, the quality programs at Oswego, Webster, East Syracuse-Minoa and Victor High Schools. He is very proud of the many students from these high schools who have gone on to march in top Drum Corps drum lines and is often sought out for private instruction. Ted's drum corps instructional career began in 1993 with the Syracuse Brigadiers. From there, he moved on to the Rochester Crusaders till 1996. In 1997 he began teaching the Empire Statesmen, where he helped win 2 DCA World Championships including the high percussion title. He left in 1999 to join the staff of the Rochester Patriots Jr. Drum and Bugle Corps (1999 DCI high percussion and division II champions). In 2002, Ted returned to the Empire Statesmen and is going in to his eighth year as percussion coordinator and recruiting director. 2009 will mark his first season as a percussion arranger at Empire. He is also an endorser for, and on the educational team of Vic Firth Percussion. He is also an active member on the percussion task force for DCA.

Guard Design / Peter Garrow

Peter Garrow began his marching career with the Webster High School MarchingBand. After graduating he spent two summers with the Rochester Crusaders. He has marched in the Junior Corps and Winter Guard arena’s with Magic of Orlando, Pride of Cininnati, The Cadets, and Emerald Marquis. He was at the helm of the Patriots Winter Guard and Drum Corps color guard programs from 1993-2003.Since then he has taken on freelance work with various groups while maintaining focus on his education.

The Empire Statesmen will host their annual Open House on Saturday and Sunday, November 29th and 30th at Our Lady of Mercy High School on Blossom Road in Rochester. Much more information can be found on our web site at http://www.statesmen.org

Welcome to the new additions (Rich Templin, Kirk Gay) and congrats to Joey Guadagnino and Teddy Mascari for getting the opportunity to write again. Great team of designers!!!!

I think this will be a great opportunity for Rich Templin. In fact, I've always felt that every instructor (and especially those who judge) should spend at least one year with America's Entertainers.

Plus, hopefully, he can use his experience in judging to help move the activity back to rewarding crowd-oriented show design. Not just for the top level DCA groups, but for all corps trying to make their mark with audiences nationwide.

This is an outstanding team of legendary instructors!! This is also a perfect fit for Empire. With This staff in place, it will be another great season for Empire. You can't ask for more in drum corps, entertainment and world class instructors.
