vbc33
Several inches of snow were on the ground in Naugatuck, CT as the Connecticut Hurricanes kicked off the 2009 season with their annual Open House. Over 100 returning and new members braved the conditions to be in attendance. In addition, there were dozens of volunteers from the Naugatuck High School Marching Band/Parents. They graciously opened their school to us, helped us navigate the building, and served us breakfast and lunch! We truly want to thank them for their support. Now to the good stuff. After registration, the corps met in the auditorium. Staff announcements were made and the 2009 production was unveiled to an anxious audience. Another post will follow this week, but for those who don't want to wait......last year the corps took a 'Journey West' and upon their arrival we find ourselves in the midst of a 'Gold Rush.' Following the meeting the corps broke into sectionals for an hour or so before lunch. Then the 50+ brass and almost 20 battery percussion came in for a basics block with Joe Roche. Joe broke down basic alignment/movement principles and discussed his goals and philosophies in regards to the 2009 season. Joe's passion was infectious and the corps fed off of it and had a great movement session. From here the corps broke back into sectionals again and gathered at the end of the day to perform what we learned for one another and many who came to watch. The pit had 15 members come out and spent the day working through the technique exercises with Mike Blancaflor and Tim Holcomb. The battery had worked through many technique and warm-up exercises with Kevin Murphy and his staff and performed several of those for an excited audience. The hornline had worked through the technique packet with Brass Caption Head Justin Mitnik and played through over two minutes of the 2009 opener to the delight of all in attendance. And the Defending World Champion colorguard learned and performed a short routine which was performed last before Program Coordinator Jim Dugan and Director Bernie Malesky wrapped up the Open House and dismissed the corps after an INCREDIBLY successful kick off to the '09 season. A more detailed report will follow on the website as well as PHOTOS from the Open House. Staff Updates are now on the website as well and many more updates are forthcoming. Rap48
Joe's enthusiasm is always infectious. I've watched it since he was a kid. Even judging with him, he gets you up for the job. You go Joe Roche!! Good Luck Hurcs.

I am looking forward to see the forward movement from where the Hurcs left off in 2008. The horn line is growing along with the rest of the corps. There seemed to be a great sense of energy in the room.
