Everything but "some old drum corps photos"

Hey, who won that contest?

No scores, sorry, just this flyer. This must have been one h-e-double-hockey-sticks of a contest. I'm guessing Aquinas, Quorom and Greece Cadets were the top contenders. If you were Quorom's cadence drummer at this contest, then I definitely remember you and your guard. I was guard captain for Scarborough at that time. Northview Heights on Finch Avenue seemed so far away from downtown. I'm guessing we needed a bigger gym with more audience seats. Many of our winter guard rehearsals and contests over the years were at St. Michael's College on St. Clair.

Winter guard competitions were intense. To ease the tension, a number of exhibition guards were formed to parody the competing guards, all in fun of course. The participants were mostly instructors and a few former marching members. Our exhibition guard in the early 80's was called Hoser Review Revue complete with 'Bob and Doug Mckenzie' uniforms. Listening to the laughter of the audience and seeing the huge smiles on the guards' faces was awesome. I also had the pleasure of watching OAKs and SA in the spring of 77 (see below). Never thought I'd laugh that much at a contest but I did. Great fun was had by all and I've good memories of these performances. edit for spelling; yikes

The comedy exhibition guards were a lot of fun...I often marched as the drummer for "Bunyan's Bums"...made up of of parents and instructors from Majestics and later Excalibur. We sort of poked fun at some of the other guards we would compete against. We had a mom who made an exact copy of the Rochester Wavettes guard captain uniform who barked out commands like "hey diddle diddle right up the middle...look out, here comes the moon!" and "Hippity-Hop, colour guard stop" for a halt command. One guard dad dressed as a baby in a diaper and bonnet. The kids loved it and the crowd enjoyed it too. The only negative comment I got was about my "Drum Corps Sucks" t-shirt I would wear....go figure!
