Crossmen Percussion Arrangers, Beddis and Markworth, Announce Instruction Leadership

Crossmen Percussion Arrangers, Lee Beddis and Andrew Markworth and Program Coordinator, Jaime Alvarez-Calderon are pleased to announce the Crossmen percussion leadership team. Rudy Gowern is named Percussion Caption Head. Paul Loos assumes the title of Battery Coordinator and Nathan Ratliff returns to the Crossmen. In 2011 Nathan will perform the duties of Front Ensemble Coordinator.

Rudy Gowern

Rudy Gowern has been involved in the drum corps activity since 1977. As a performing member throughout 15 seasons he marched with the Heightsman from 1977-1983, the Citations from 1986-1987, the Boston Crusaders from 1988-1992 and aged out of the 1993 Star of Indiana World Championship percussion section.

Mr. Gowern’s DCI teaching experience includes the Magic of Orlando, Phoenix, and the Boston Crusaders. Mr. Gowern served as the Percussion Caption Head for the Crusaders from 1999-2001.

Mr. Gowern most recently served as Director of Percussion Activities for the Mt Juliet High School Band of Gold and King Philip Regional High School. He has also served as an instructor and percussion arranger for the Boston College Screaming Eagles Marching Band and the Boston University WGI Indoor Percussion Ensemble.

Mr. Gowern is an active percussion adjudicator for the Indiana Percussion Association, the Southeastern Color Guard Circuit, the Louisiana Percussion Circuit and the Gulf-coast Percussion Circuit. He is an active clinician and endorsement artist for many quality companies.

Mr. Gowern is earning his Music Education Degree at Jacksonville State University, Jacksonville, AL and is also on the percussion staff for the JSU Marching Southerners. Besides being named Percussion Caption Head for the Crossmen Drum Corps, Mr. Gowern is also the Assistant Director and Music Arranger for the newly formed WGI PIW group, Center Stage Percussion from Jacksonville, AL.

Rudy lives just outside of Atlanta, GA with his wife Ondrea and their son Paul.

Paul Loos

Paul Loos is a full time percussion educator, clinician, arranger and designer. Paul has been involved with many different high schools, drum corps and independent ensembles since 2001. His marching experience includes the Glassmen Drum and bugles corps, NorthCoast Academy, and the Michigan State Marching Band.

Paul started at Walled Lake Central and Walled Lake Percussion in 2005 and is currently the battery caption head, battery arranger and Co-Designer. Paul has helped WLP receive a medal every year in the MCGC circuit and 2 medals in the WGI circuit (Gold in PIA in 2006, Bronze in PIO in 2007). WLP has also been a PSW finalist since 2009. Due to the growth of WLP they were able to divide into both a PSA and a PSW ensemble. Paul is also the percussion director at Lake Orion High School. In just his first year at Lake Orion, Paul helped the organization win its first State Championship in 2010. During that season Paul worked as Program Coordinator, designer, battery arranger and drill writer.

Paul’s PIW teaching career began with Eastside Fury in 2007 and 2008. In 2009 Paul joined the NCA staff and was also a guest judge for the Indoor European Championships. In 2010, Paul joined the staff of Redline and helped them to their highest score in the history of the organization in the WGI circuit and their first MCGC state Championship. Paul is currently the Battery caption head and arranger for NorthCoast Academy.

Paul started his DCI teaching career with Crossmen Drum Corps in 2006. He then joined the Carolina Crown percussion staff in 2009 and 2010. Paul is excited to back with the Crossmen Drum Corps for the 2011 season.

Nathan Ratliff

Returning for his third season with The Crossmen, Nathan Ratliff currently teaches and performs throughout the Dallas/Ft.Worth metroplex as both a percussionist and pianist. Nathan is an active percussion teacher in the Dallas/Ft.Worth Metroplex, currently

working with Lake Highlands high school and Frisco Centennial high school. He taught the front ensemble for The Colony high school for 8yrs starting in 2002 and has arranged the pit music since 2005. In 2007, Nathan joined the staff at Surround Sound Percussion, a world class WGI ensemble, where he also arranged the pit music in 2009.

At the 2006 Percussive Arts Society International Convention, he was a featured performer in a clinic of the works of Japanese composer Minoru Miki. His clinic performance led to an invitation to perform as part of a percussion trio at the 2007 Hokuto International Music Festival in Japan.

An in-demand accompanist, Nathan performs with many local middle school and high school choirs. Mr. Ratliff also performs in accompanying recitals at the University of North Texas, Texas Christian University and Texas A&M Commerce.

Nathan received Bachelor of Music degrees in percussion and piano performance from the University of Oklahoma. While at OU, he twice won the Concerto Competition, performing with the symphony orchestra on percussion and piano. An active member of the Percussion Ensemble, Steel Band, Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra, he studied under Dr. Richard Gipson (percussion) and Dr. Jane Magrath (piano) and was named the Outstanding Undergraduate Student in piano, percussion, and harp in 2000.

Nathan was also a member of The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps for the 1997 and 1998 seasons during which he was named the 1997 DCI Multi- Percussion Champion.

Nathan went on to receive a Master of Music in percussion performance from the University of North Texas, where he studied with Mark Ford, Christopher Deane, and Paul Rennick. His ensemble experience includes classical percussion, steel band, drumline, pop ensemble, and as both a percussionist and harpist for the UNT Wind Symphony. He has performed with Keiko Abe, Andy Narell, Ray Holman, Pan Ramajay, Darrin Dyke, Mike Mainieri and Brian Zator. Upon completing his degree, he became the

director of the UNT 2:00 Steel Band through 2005.

Nathan joined the percussion staff at The Crossmen in the fall of 2008 and is looking forward to another exciting season.
